How on earth could someone dislike this... it's an incredible song. I wish it had been on one of the other albums. I want to buy A is for Accident just so I can have this song!
laughs..welcome to the american nightmare..grow up spend a shitload going to college to get a degree in a field you will never work in...Get married buy a house for too much money and a new car the depreciates 5000 dollars when driven off the lot..Have two or three kids and be in debt so that you can never have a vacation and never pay for their college...All the stress, family expectations, lies, compromising and total bullshit..Grow old with grandkids who never visit..then die..
Welcome to the B.S. that is American Dream doctrine. You are only as exceptional as you feel to yourself, and maybe a few good friends. This duo is inspiring in its desire to be different, if not a million-selling enterprise. That God for a little individualism.
I bed to differ, I believe this song is about one being trapped inside their own head. Self punishment, and demise is evident all through this song. No one ever listens to her and so her only form of attention comes from being disobedient, angry, and hateful. It almost would seem she grew up in a broken environment and was told by the outside world she could be anything she wanted, even though she knew she could never amount to anything (based on the ill-treatment from family and friends?)
God, this song is truly beautiful. The last line "I could be president" reminds me of all the dashed hopes of childhood; when you're young, you are told to follow your dreams, and that you can run your country, and then you grow up to discover that you're not as special as everyone told you. There's nothing more painful than realizing how unexceptional you are, and this song seems to be centred around that.
@HTROXURSOX Yeah, it seems the song is largely about what you said.
Just a thought: You're only unexceptional when you compare yourself to other people. So maybe the problem is we're taught to do that, even though others have completely different lives and comparing ourselves doesn't make much sense.

Anyone that really wants to know what this song is about, those five words are all you have to understand.

I meant to say 'Thank God', if there is such an entity.
