coach may i ask how should i play small forward give me some tips and is it ok if i prefered to run to the basket then rebound the ball than to wait in a low post ty:) sorry for my bad english
@blademass122 Usually your coach is going to let you know what he wants you to do. If you are playing on your own then do what you do. If that is going to the boards or posting low, do that. The small forward is really a rebounder and and an ocasional shooter as well. There are no particular rules for what a Small Forward HAS TO DO!! BTW, you english is fine!
@blademass122 You probably jump fine as you are. The idea is to learn to use your vertical to explode to the rebound! Just keep working on the Monster Rebound Drill and you will get better.
Your videos on how to shoot three-pointers was great. As much as I like using my legs, I want to shoot shots around the post and free throws without much reliance. (I cna't jump in free throws). how do I do this?
my arms are only like about 11 inches in width, where should i get my source of power from when I'm shooting? If I bend my legs to much, it ruins my quick release, should I try to increase my arm strength?
@jgill1234567 The answer to your problems can be found in our video "MAKE THE 3 POINTERS!!! Get Your Legs Into It! They are the largest and strongest muscles in your body. Also check out the video "Dip Rhytmn" for how to improve your quicker re;ease.
Very nice video. Helped me a lot. But i'm having trouble with the Mikan step. I seem to get blocked whenever I use it or it just basically misses. Anyway to avoid that? Thanks :)
@xxKLekkxx check out our "Mikan Drill" video and then check out our "Finishes at the Rim" video. The second one will give you several options, including the Mikan, to make the basket with a defender.
What about hand position in battling rebounds? Is it better to raise hands at least in the head level to prepare catch rebound after someone shoots the ball?
@hooperwille We feel that the box out or block out requires the arms to be at shoulder height with the elbows extended outward to control the person you are blocking out. The hands are in a better positon to rebound if they are in this position.
@MrLimaman Very good question. As we play the game we get better predicting where the rebound may go. Remember these things. Flat shots and long shot usually result in long rebounds. Soft arcing shots tend stay close to the basket. Shots from the sides tend to go to he opposite side of the basket about 65-70% of the time. Hope this helps.
This really helped in my inside game, but I have a question, what can you do to fend of those high leaping guards coming in from your back for the help D? I can get pass the center/PF guarding me what can I do to prevent those guards attacking from the back?
Hey there shotscience.. as a player, rebounding is what sets my game.. whenever i rebound well i also play good.. but i noticed that for the past weeks, i'm not the same rebounder i used to be.. i get rebounded by even smaller players and my game is also somewhat downgrading.. i need help on how i can be a really good rebounder on the court.. thumbs up on your videos..
@kevinaddictus Thanks for your Thumbs Up. we really appreciate it very much. Rebounding is about several important things. First we have to Box out the opponents rebounders: read the rebound (Where is the ball going); Rebound with "TWO HANDS" and finally "ATTACK THE REBOUND!" We have our players work on this drill almost every day to get them to go get the ball!
@BazhoFromTheHood Notice that the step-through move is following a rebound. This means the ball handler is free to choose which of his feet will be his pivot foot; as long as he shoots (or passes) the ball after the step-through, it's allowed.
hey shot science im about 4'4 in high school and cos of my size im havin trouble gettin the rebound espicially with frends twice my size so is ther any way u can help? if so thx
@Gidg2go Wish we had an answer for you, but you are at a real disadvantage. The only answer we can offer is to beat them to the ball and learn to block out really well.
@ShotScience I'm 5'3.5". I once got 10 defensive rebounds. On that game, I just try and beat them to the ball. If the ball is missing short, I'm mostly right underneath. Though I have to realize my reach is a lot worse than my mind thinks. If none of the taller teammates get the ball, I just worry about my guy not getting it.
@TimHowardII Hey Tim, the Monster Rebounding Drill is all about going after ALL rebounds. Sounds like that is who you are. Size isn't always the most important factor.
@ShotScience Well, because I'm more adept at defensive rebounding, instead of going for a second shot, I need work on outlet pass or drills that will help me dribble out of a rebound. I'm too short to bomb a pass over people, but if I decide to dribble, I get sagged into double teams a lot.
Hey shotscience, i watched this video a while back and started practicing it but when i wen to a basketball workout at school (im in 9th grade) the coach said that if i went down after i get the ball someone might hit it out of my hands because highschool basketball is a lot faster. He said that i should keep my hands up after i get the ball and then spring back up to rebound. Mabey you could make a video on this.
@jcm0428 We guess that you were not doing this the way that we speak of in our video (Having the ball in a Position of Power). This is to protect the ball. We disagree with your coach on this one. High School BB is fast, but the ball extended is easier to know away than one held in "The position of Power." It also allows for you to finish with different put-back moves like the Mikan Step. Our view!!!
I've been watching all your shot science videos over the summer and have been practicing every move like the Hammer, and (my favorite) the Wicked crossover dribble. Last year i was a wimpy little freshmen boy that that wasnt very good at basketball (went 5-15) in my basketball season, but this fall ive been playing with juniors and seniors and breaking their ankles, hitting those "impossible shots" with the defense in my face and i just feel so much more confident! And i cant thank you enough!!
hey guys need some help.. in our village, i usually play center-power forward cause i'm usually the tallest guy but in our school the coach assigned me to the small forward position. And i sometimes find it difficult to adjust my playing style. I'm about 5'9 or 5'9 and 1/2.. really need help cause i'm confused on what position to master.. thank you :D
@ShotScience thanks for the tip!! and all of your videos really helped in my development as a basketball player so keep posting more videos to help others improve as well :DD
Coach, I am a short player and I get my shot blocked a lot so I like to drive to the post to make them think I'm taking a lay-up, I give a jab step fake and a head fake to create some space and then I fade all the way back and throw the ball off the backboard. Do you recommend me to go for the foul or the fade? (I make most of my bankshot fades, I shoot like 60-80% there.)
@DXiklledkennyXD Well possibly a combination of the two might be very effective. When you do nothing but fade shots you are predictable. Check out our video "Finishes at the Rim" and possibly work on two or three moves that you feel confident with and these may help you get to the And-one situation.
Coach, I want to see an actual game where all your drills are put into use. Different situations call for different techniques and such and I would love to see when and how the different plays are used.
@TehSquishie: Well, this would be sweet. If you were to watch Chase's college Hi-lite videos on our site you would see many of the things that we teach. You will see him and his team mates demonstrate many of these skills. You can also see many of these skills in the NCAA tournament games that are going on now if you watch the games closely.
I have a recommendation to make this drill work at practice or with 2 players:
The defensive player stands behind the offensive player on the block. The D tosses the ball like in the video, the O attacks and rebounds the ball. The D follows and should help the O practice by running through all three D scenarios (top side for power layup and pump fake finish, inside for "nose elbow" over the top layup, and Mikan opposite finish). This way it's realistic and 2 players are involved.
@MrCoachMay: Coach, we think this could be a really good drill. We actually do this with our students as coaches. The coach steps in to the positions you mention. We will experiment with this. Thanks.
In the power position; would this prevent any defenders from taking the ball off me (leading to a free throw if they tried to smack the ball from my hand) or is it just used to keep a good grip?
@twirp153: Thanks so much for your nice comment. This drill is a "Monster" because you learn to attack the rebound instead of waiting for it to come to you.
@MrBaskfreak: Well, thank you so much for your nice comment. We work really hard to provide meaningful basketball skills and information. If you would, please "Spread the Word" so we can continue to provide this information to a larger group. Thanks again.
@tomlecter: Glad we could help out here. We really love this drill. It can make you a much better rebounder, because you "ATTACK THE REBOUND" INSTEAD OF WAITING FOR IT TO COME TO YOU.
@gryphus001: Well shot blocking is a tough one! One major mistake made by many players is to "swing" at the ball so that it looks awesome. They want to blast it out of bounds or against the wall for the "Crowd response." This can hurt the blocker as they get too involved in making the block dramatic. We believe that you must really work on your timing (not too early) and merely get a hand up for enough contact to make the ball errant. It's less dramatic, but less chance for a foul call.
Just a question. After catching the rebound, do you have to put the ball down? I hate nothing more than when I put the ball down only to have some 5'10" gaurd swat it out of my hand
@Broncos88surehands: The only need for the dribble is if we need to get closer the basket. If we need to do, this we use a "Slide Step with a dribble" to get closer. Our dribble is a "Power Dribble." In the video notice that this dribble is with two hands and is only knee high. We respect your feelings about those "little quick handed guards."
@Broncos88surehands: Thanks, we like it as well. The "Big Players" we coach get a steady diet of this at every work-out. We want them to attack every rebound and not just the ones that come to them!
Hi shotscience, it's me again Tim, I wanna ask about cross overs and fakes, i just get to 13 years old and I have 162cm tall, I want to train a small forward, can you make of some videos about 3 points or rebounds?
@timtim627 Hey Tim, all of our videos on shooting extend to 3-point shooting as well. The only small difference might be that you have to harness more power from your legs (check out the video "Get Your Legs into It"). We also have videos up on the Crossover dribble ("Breakin' Ankles") and shot fakes ("Fake 'em out of their Shoes"). As for rebounding, we're working on putting together a video that explains our point of view on them, but if you're watching this video, you're well on your way.
@JebesDrota: Hey Jebes, that size probably fits both positions pretty well. Usually the PF is more agile so they can also step away from the basket. It looks like you have more time to grow if you are only 15. Our best suggestions are to work on being the perimeter player if you have those skills. Hope this helps.
Hey shot science I'm12 years old and five feet six inches and I just wanted to know if I'm short for my age and how I should score when I'm playing basketball
Hey shot science. I'm 12 years old and I'm five feet six inches I just wanted to know if I am short for my age and how I should score when Im playing basketball
@GioRox1234: Hey Gio, at 12 you still have a lot of time to grow. You can look at your parents and get a pretty good idea where you size may end up. It is often usual to have a growth spree of 3-6 inches. We advise you to work on your entire game and by 16 or 17 you will probably be reaching your adult height.
hey coach i was wondering what should i do to improve my explosion and my vertical so i can be more effective in blocking shots, getting rebounds, and getting to the rim
@Cristlefrost: Well, we really like jumping rope. We recommend 6 set one minute sets three or four times a week. Start jumping and count the number of repetitions for that one minute. You will probably begin with 60-80 in the beginning. This will increase as you work out. Our best student can get 193 reps in one minute. This will help in speed, agility and explosion. Great drill. Try it.
@SPiDAAMuNKy : WOW! That is a really long laundry list. This is one you will need to research for yourself. One recommendation is Jumping Rope. This is good for almost all sports.
@apwarrior99No, it is not a travel. Chase has both feet on the floor following a jump stop. He can use either foot as a pivot foot. So, not not a travel.
coach tom i dont know what is happen with me because the more i train my shot the worst i am shoting sorry for my english because i talk it more or less. would you explain me what is happen to me?
@jairoescalante07: The only way we can help you here is to see you on video. Otherwise we are just guessing. Try to get one to us and we will try to help.
@exchamelot: If you can stand by for a short while we will have our tee shirts ready for sale. The design is done and now looking for someone to print them for us. We will also have other apparel available in the near future. Stand by for those shirts.
Ok, so i am an extremely short player. And i find that doing hookshots and lots of the "over the top" finishing move work very well. Is this correct or am i just getting lucky? What else do you reccomend for short players like me?
@iamblobicus: Well it is impossible for us to know how to help you since we cannot see you shooting. If you get a video posted for us we will analyze it for you and see if we can help you. We will be waiting.
@BWeiChen: Not really! Aggressiveness, timing, skills and courage are really important traits for becoming a good player. The one thing that you need to remember is, you must work hard on your fundamental skill. If not you can count on being average.. Lets go!!!!
hey shotscience, i have a problem, so last week i was working on my vertical leap and suddenly there was pain in the back of my head where it meets the neck. Afterwards, i get this feeling like i want to throw up. Some people say its because im breathing wrong, but i am sure that i breathed the right way. i heard Chase is a great personal trainer, can he help me?
@PwNuRmoTheR: Pw, if you are having these symptoms and they are on-going, you may need to see a doctor about this. Chase is not a Physician and therefore unqualified to give you advice on something like this. It is possible you may have tweeked some muscles or ligaments. Check it out.
This is an interesting drill. I'm gonna give it a shot next time I go out to practice. I have one question though, regarding staying square to the baseline: why would you do that as opposed to setting yourself up for a post up?
@seventysschev: Well, if we have inside position on the defender we want to maintain that position to be able to score. If you get caught with the defender cutting you off to the inside then a post up may be the answer. Read the situation and go from there. Thanks for your comment and give it a try. We have had several of our students turn into "Monsters" on the boards
what happens if you can't flick your wrist when you shoot?i know thats not reallyrelated to the video but i just have so much trouble flicking my wrist!!!!
@specialforcepro1 you really shouldn't be trying to "Flick" your wrist because that tends to impart too much "action" onto the ball. We teach that you should have a very relaxed "Flop" finish. As your arm extends out of the set point, your wrist should just very gently flop over the top of your arm. What this does is soften the touch on the ball and gives it a nice slow back spin. The less "live" the ball is when it hits the rim (if it hits the rim) the more likely it will die and fall in.
@canweixiang: Hey, thanks so much for your nice comment. We work very hard to provide information that players can use. We are located in California, USA. We had a foreign exchange student from your country about six years ago. He was the best!!! We will continue to put up more videos in the future and please, "Spread the Word."

@MrCoachMay: Hey coach, this sounds like a solid idea. We will give it a shot as soon as we can. Stay tuned.
ShotScience 1 year ago
@MrCoachMay: Coach, we think this could be a really good drill. We actually do this with our students as coaches. The coach steps in to the positions you mention. We will experiment with this. Thanks.

coach teach us the hook shot please?
LFC4EVA1990 1 year ago
Hey coach,
In the power position; would this prevent any defenders from taking the ball off me (leading to a free throw if they tried to smack the ball from my hand) or is it just used to keep a good grip?
LFC4EVA1990 1 year ago
@LFC4EVA1990: Both of these things are just what we are speaking about. Power -up position is really important.

@twirp153: Thanks so much for your nice comment. This drill is a "Monster" because you learn to attack the rebound instead of waiting for it to come to you.

thanks for the video, is very usefull to learn about rebounds, specially the tecnique elevate elbows violently... Thanks again Sir.
tomlecter 1 year ago
@tomlecter: Glad we could help out here. We really love this drill. It can make you a much better rebounder, because you "ATTACK THE REBOUND" INSTEAD OF WAITING FOR IT TO COME TO YOU.

ShotScience 1 year ago
now that i can rebounding, do you have any ideas about shot-blocking?
gryphus001 1 year ago
@gryphus001: Well shot blocking is a tough one! One major mistake made by many players is to "swing" at the ball so that it looks awesome. They want to blast it out of bounds or against the wall for the "Crowd response." This can hurt the blocker as they get too involved in making the block dramatic. We believe that you must really work on your timing (not too early) and merely get a hand up for enough contact to make the ball errant. It's less dramatic, but less chance for a foul call.
ShotScience 1 year ago
Just a question. After catching the rebound, do you have to put the ball down? I hate nothing more than when I put the ball down only to have some 5'10" gaurd swat it out of my hand
Broncos88surehands 1 year ago
@Broncos88surehands: The only need for the dribble is if we need to get closer the basket. If we need to do, this we use a "Slide Step with a dribble" to get closer. Our dribble is a "Power Dribble." In the video notice that this dribble is with two hands and is only knee high. We respect your feelings about those "little quick handed guards."
ShotScience 1 year ago
Very good rebound drill
Broncos88surehands 1 year ago
@Broncos88surehands: Thanks, we like it as well. The "Big Players" we coach get a steady diet of this at every work-out. We want them to attack every rebound and not just the ones that come to them!

Hi shotscience, it's me again Tim, I wanna ask about cross overs and fakes, i just get to 13 years old and I have 162cm tall, I want to train a small forward, can you make of some videos about 3 points or rebounds?
timtim627 1 year ago
@timtim627 Hey Tim, all of our videos on shooting extend to 3-point shooting as well. The only small difference might be that you have to harness more power from your legs (check out the video "Get Your Legs into It"). We also have videos up on the Crossover dribble ("Breakin' Ankles") and shot fakes ("Fake 'em out of their Shoes"). As for rebounding, we're working on putting together a video that explains our point of view on them, but if you're watching this video, you're well on your way.

Hey ShotScience. I'm 15yrs old and 6'3'' 200 pounds. Is that good for a PF or center?
JebesDrota 1 year ago
@JebesDrota: Hey Jebes, that size probably fits both positions pretty well. Usually the PF is more agile so they can also step away from the basket. It looks like you have more time to grow if you are only 15. Our best suggestions are to work on being the perimeter player if you have those skills. Hope this helps.

Hey shot science. I'm 12 years old and I'm five feet six inches I just wanted to know if I am short for my age and how I should score when Im playing basketball
GioRox1234 1 year ago
@GioRox1234: Hey Gio, at 12 you still have a lot of time to grow. You can look at your parents and get a pretty good idea where you size may end up. It is often usual to have a growth spree of 3-6 inches. We advise you to work on your entire game and by 16 or 17 you will probably be reaching your adult height.

ShotScience 1 year ago
hey coach i was wondering what should i do to improve my explosion and my vertical so i can be more effective in blocking shots, getting rebounds, and getting to the rim
Cristlefrost 1 year ago
@Cristlefrost: Well, we really like jumping rope. We recommend 6 set one minute sets three or four times a week. Start jumping and count the number of repetitions for that one minute. You will probably begin with 60-80 in the beginning. This will increase as you work out. Our best student can get 193 reps in one minute. This will help in speed, agility and explosion. Great drill. Try it.

do you need high vertical to become a good a player?
BWeiChen 1 year ago
@BWeiChen: Not really! Aggressiveness, timing, skills and courage are really important traits for becoming a good player. The one thing that you need to remember is, you must work hard on your fundamental skill. If not you can count on being average.. Lets go!!!!
ShotScience 1 year ago
hey shotscience, i have a problem, so last week i was working on my vertical leap and suddenly there was pain in the back of my head where it meets the neck. Afterwards, i get this feeling like i want to throw up. Some people say its because im breathing wrong, but i am sure that i breathed the right way. i heard Chase is a great personal trainer, can he help me?
PwNuRmoTheR 1 year ago
@PwNuRmoTheR: Pw, if you are having these symptoms and they are on-going, you may need to see a doctor about this. Chase is not a Physician and therefore unqualified to give you advice on something like this. It is possible you may have tweeked some muscles or ligaments. Check it out.
ShotScience 1 year ago
This is an interesting drill. I'm gonna give it a shot next time I go out to practice. I have one question though, regarding staying square to the baseline: why would you do that as opposed to setting yourself up for a post up?
seventysschev 1 year ago
@seventysschev: Well, if we have inside position on the defender we want to maintain that position to be able to score. If you get caught with the defender cutting you off to the inside then a post up may be the answer. Read the situation and go from there. Thanks for your comment and give it a try. We have had several of our students turn into "Monsters" on the boards
ShotScience 1 year ago
@ShotScience : Ah, I see. Thanks!

what happens if you can't flick your wrist when you shoot?i know thats not reallyrelated to the video but i just have so much trouble flicking my wrist!!!!
specialforcepro1 1 year ago
@specialforcepro1 you really shouldn't be trying to "Flick" your wrist because that tends to impart too much "action" onto the ball. We teach that you should have a very relaxed "Flop" finish. As your arm extends out of the set point, your wrist should just very gently flop over the top of your arm. What this does is soften the touch on the ball and gives it a nice slow back spin. The less "live" the ball is when it hits the rim (if it hits the rim) the more likely it will die and fall in.
ShotScience 1 year ago
@specialforcepro1 check out our video on the "Flop Finish." Hope this helps!

does this work even when i am being boxed out?
ConstructionMadness 1 year ago
@ConstructionMadness: Probably is not going to be effective if you are blocked out.
We believe that "players" who are active and aggressive are really difficult to be boxed out. Get around or by those boxing out and get to the ball.
