Wow, Scotch drinkers are very uptight. Gary is a wine taster and he spends his time tasting wine. Not Scotch. Stop hating on him because he's swirling the glass or because the water ratio isn't right. He admits in this episode that he doesn't know what he's doing. He is just simply doing a scotch episode because Mark Mullenweg likes scotch and Gary just wanted to be accommodating to someone who is kind of a big deal. He is a wine critic not a scotch critic.
Go to the Art of the Drink, they do whisky tasting much better.
Pretty much all the comments ive seen are true, wrong glasses, wrong quantity of water, dont swirl.
And breathe through the mouth, sniffing the whisky blows all the factory senses in the nose out by the heat.
And i tend to use 1:1 water. With most scotches you really need to strap yourself down, with the strength of the flavour. So that amount of water does just fine for me, but add as you go along if your just tasting.
The glasses: they're actually alright. They're narrower towards the top, which will concentrate the vapors for nosing, and that's what counts. A proper Glencairn glass is best, but these aren't bad.
The water: for a Laphroaig cask strength, two parts water for one part whisky *MIGHT* be okay (though probably overboard). Adding water is ultimately a question of personal taste - but I think they're adding too much, especially to The Belvenie.
You guys are idiots... The guy in purple put waaaay too much water in... The guy on the left is a moron. NO ONE would recommend double the water. You dont do more than a splash.
Guess what man, you drowned the scotch with water, thats why there was something lost. Way to waste the scotch.

ive never added water to my scotches. ive never understood it and i never will..if you want a sweeter and easier drink, then you dont like scotch and shouldn't drink it. KEEP THE H20 OUT!
@oobama08 Actually, it is recommended that some water be added to a scotch whisky, it allows for more of the flavors to come through. Not too much water though, it depends on the whisky, from a few drops for 40% strength, to a dollop of water for that Laphroig cask strength. No ice though, ice kills the nose. The best thing to do is to progressively add small amounts of water at a time and see how the flavors reveal themselves. Three very good whiskies here by the way.
Before I watch the video, I just gotta say, since I see it sitting there: Balvenie 12yr double wood is probably my #1 single malt scotch. (I always drink my wines and scotches straight btw! chilling and ice are two things I am not a fan of)
Once again, great show! you should really have more guest once in awhile! it hype up the show
btw, Apple will most likely fall once Steve is gone.... it'll make it for a short while as someone mention but it'll lose its touch as other company catchup from behind
I dont wish Apple fall though because Apple is always been the company that pushes the market forward
Have you tried premium irish whiskey? Its really far better. They did invent it after all. In the irish language whiskey is translated as 'the water of life' and rightly so too!

just a drop or 2 is all ya need... if you are throwin in half water half scotch you ruin the drink.

You can oftentimes release more flavours by adding literally one or two drops of warm water from a pippet to break the surface as it seems

Of the three, what Scotch would be the best on ice only?
zardozman7 2 years ago
None of them. Try a light blended Scotch. Dewars, J&B, or Cutty Sark.
slinkyboysix 2 years ago
Yuk, no blended! Thanks for the reply.

balvenie is good
talisker and laphroaig are too smoky
coollubavdude 2 years ago
The majority (apart from cask strength's), only need one or two drops of water. They absolutely butchered that poor Balvenie.
thisistman 2 years ago 3
Putting a lot of water in the Balvenie - probably drowning it.

Good stuff, I probably would have gone with Lagavulin 16 to represent the peaty single malts though.

wrong glasses to drink malts...
emouch1 3 years ago 9
Maybe I'm being captious but single malts should be enjoyed with in a proper single malt glass.
RS3n 3 years ago 11
They are ok glasses for drinking malt, not for nosing. Hope this helps. A nosing glass should be tulip shaped. Glencairn glass make the best.
Enjoy.

Sherry is from spain. 'sherry' is jerez anglicised. Jerez being the spanish town associated with it
