I saw a program with Steven Tyler showing the process of him writing Janie's Got a Gun. He initially wrote the song using the piano, and then put the rythm on drums. Joey got incredibly fustrated during rehearsal because he couldn't get the beat down like Steven had written it. That's when I realized that Steven Tyler was not just a singer, but he was an artist in the truest since of the word.
ST started off playing the drums but knew he would make a better front man... Im not saying he is bad at drums... But I think he was right! BUT you have to realize that the man is a musical genius... He can play everything!
For the ones that doesn't know. Yeah, Steven was first the drummer of a band before being on Aerosmith and going on vocals. Steven was Joey's drum teacher or mentor (however you want to say it). Both are pretty good at it. Both are awesome!!!
all i know is that now he's an insane drummer, and he progressed by HIMSELF. i went to the concert where Tyler hit Perry in the head with the mic at jones beach last summer. they did this solo together as the third part of Kramer's 3-part solo. if you had seen that you would know that he definitely isn't getting too much credit. yeah, he's not john bonham or keith moon, but he's part of aerosmith, the best all-american rock band around.
I think you guys are giving Joey way too much credit. What many aren't aware of is the fact that Steven was the one that taught Joey how to play the drums. He used to scream at Joey all the time for not doing it right lol. I'm sure he's improved since then though.
@Flames649 Nope, Joey is self taught initially. He was a founding member of Aerosmith and had been in many bands before that as their drummer. Steven has contributed to his progress over the years in a big way and Joey looks at him as a mentor, but he did not TEACH Joey how to play the drums.
Joey Kramer should be ranked right up there. If you've seen them live, you know what I mean. Tyler and Perry get all the press, but without Brad, Tom, and Joey, they wouldn't have been around this long.
I saw Joey do a drum solo at an Aerosmith concert recently. HE COULD PLAY JUST AS FAST W/ HIS BARE HANDS AS W/ HIS STICKS!! I can't believe I had never heard of him before that concert
this beat is amazing!!...all my other friends are obsessed with tayler lautner and aston merrygold. they say they love them, but its not just about the looks...its about talent, personality AND looks. fortunatley for steven hes got all three!!...love you steven tyler!!xxx
This is just awesome! Never knew he could do that along with all his other musical talents. When I saw this I just kept replaying, it's such a killer beat. So that's drums, vocals, harmonica, what else does he do? Great video, great band, LONG LIVE AEROSMITH!!!!!!!!! Nearly 40 years and still amazing!!!!
What a great piece of vidi.........Steven is great when he gives that primal scream @ the 2 min. mark....Joey had his cans on so he was oblivious the whole time Steven was slammin' or hammin' it up on the floor Toms, fuckin' great!
Its cool to see Steven Tyler still drumming while being the front man for Aerosmith.I heard he was a drummer in a band before stepping up to do vocals many years ago but had no idea he was this good..Awesome vid
@MrDoctorDJ Yes, you are correct. Steven was the drummer in a band called Fox Chase back in the late 1960's and very early 1970's.. They were based out of the Lake Sunapee-Dartmouth region of New Hampshire.
i never thought of using the sticks like that! u knoe, this iz kewl because steven drummed before he was in aerosmith, so now we can hear what he cud....no.....can do!
Steven could hve held the sticks backwards for new sounds. Due to the ends having different effects on the drum, the handle might create a lower beat than with the tips. But we might never know for sure. :)
Steven Tyler actually used to play drums in bands pre-Aerosmith. It's kinda odd that he would hold them backwards, unless he knows something we don't.
yeah steven tyler in both joey kramer both of them use to beat the drum with the other end of the stick because it sounds more louder joey still use his drum sticks that way.
lol, you can see Steven counting notes (beats? whatever, i don't speak drummer language) how he moves his head! "back and forth, back and forth" especially at the begining! greatness!!
They are playing better live now than they ever did. I hope they give us one more TITA/Rocks type album, then they can call it a day... Joey Kramer is the American John Bonham (or Bonham was the English Joey Kramer?)
I think Bonham was a little older and Zep 'peaked' before
Aerosmith even showed, but I do go with Joey for sheer inventive style. It's a good comparison, two hard driving
drummers with distinctive subtleties, each one with their
own definite character. I do think Joey tries harder, and it's that part of him that, well, kept him alive... which is kind of a big point in his favor. Bonham, for all his greatness was a little bit of a bum, but in a good way. Except it killed him.
yeah he was, he was a drummer in chain reaction but when he heard how their bass player sings he said: "dude let me sing this shit ok?" :). and at the beginning of Aerosmith, he was a drummer but only few days, until he heard that his friend Joey Kramer is in town .
