I saw a program with Steven Tyler showing the process of him writing Janie's Got a Gun. He initially wrote the song using the piano, and then put the rythm on drums. Joey got incredibly fustrated during rehearsal because he couldn't get the beat down like Steven had written it. That's when I realized that Steven Tyler was not just a singer, but he was an artist in the truest since of the word.

For the ones that doesn't know. Yeah, Steven was first the drummer of a band before being on Aerosmith and going on vocals. Steven was Joey's drum teacher or mentor (however you want to say it). Both are pretty good at it. Both are awesome!!!

all i know is that now he's an insane drummer, and he progressed by HIMSELF. i went to the concert where Tyler hit Perry in the head with the mic at jones beach last summer. they did this solo together as the third part of Kramer's 3-part solo. if you had seen that you would know that he definitely isn't getting too much credit. yeah, he's not john bonham or keith moon, but he's part of aerosmith, the best all-american rock band around.

I think you guys are giving Joey way too much credit. What many aren't aware of is the fact that Steven was the one that taught Joey how to play the drums. He used to scream at Joey all the time for not doing it right lol. I'm sure he's improved since then though.

@Flames649 Nope, Joey is self taught initially. He was a founding member of Aerosmith and had been in many bands before that as their drummer. Steven has contributed to his progress over the years in a big way and Joey looks at him as a mentor, but he did not TEACH Joey how to play the drums.

Steven could hve held the sticks backwards for new sounds. Due to the ends having different effects on the drum, the handle might create a lower beat than with the tips. But we might never know for sure. :)

Aerosmith even showed, but I do go with Joey for sheer inventive style. It's a good comparison, two hard driving

drummers with distinctive subtleties, each one with their

own definite character. I do think Joey tries harder, and it's that part of him that, well, kept him alive... which is kind of a big point in his favor. Bonham, for all his greatness was a little bit of a bum, but in a good way. Except it killed him.
