Born in 1981, began to study guitar at age 10 with Mr. Chen Zhi, became the youngest person to win First Prize in a guitar competition in Japan at age 12. I'll call this talent or gifted.
Agree to an extent, but it should coexist in tandem. Of course, with that being said, one can practice hours/years etc. but sometimes the individual will not rise above standards and compete in the caliber of such luminaries, be it whomever;talent might then take over!
the whole argumentation is nonsense, because you cant define talent. Bach, Mozart, whatever are well known, because people liked their music or/and they made up something new. But there where a lot of - equally "good" composers - at that time, that are totally forgotten by now.
I also think, that Bach was a great genius (who doesnt? ^^), but dont forget, that he has learned from a very young age, and spent really much time improving his skills.
I cannot think of a gene, that means music. talent
I had this complete concert on video tape too about 10 years ago. It was recorded when Wang YaMeng was twelve and just won the Tokyo international guitar competition, being the first from China to win a major guitar competition and the youngest in the competition's history! I miss this concert sooo much thank you for posting this up =)
btw her caprice no.24 in this concert is just amazing, esp during the pizz variation.
An incredible performance by any standard. Intense and very musical!

@789vbc did she start playing the guitar at age 10 or did she begin studying with chen zi at age 10?

Excellent for a 12 year year old, but it could use some color and dynamic contrasts.

usually im a firm believer in that there is no such thing as natural talent.
its nice to be proven wrong every now and then.

The great classics; Bach, Beethoven, Mozart composing perfect ABA form at age, Rachmaninoff etc. A plethora of natural talent if one looks!

i believe in practice above talent. its just a matter of dedication.

Com essa idade eu nem sonhava em aprender violão!
É sempre emocionante ver um(a)jovem se dedicando de forma tão séria à música.
