It's a good thing that men such as Chris Strachwitz and Harry Oster were making the rounds in the 60's recording vital artists such as Smoky Babe or we would have never heard them. I've been through Itta Bena several times, it's an old, small cotton plantation community. It's believed that Smoky Babe died around 1975, but his death has never been comfirmed.
thanks Mike..i totally agree with you and i can only dream of visiting the Delta....makes you wonder about those bluesmen who slipped through the net though...Ike Zinnerman for one
Such a pity that he wasn't better known...but i guess one can say that about a lot of black blues players back then....they deserved much more then they got...anyhow, this is a true gem thank you for posting this much appreciated !.
Some very fine playing. From 2blindboyblue's comment, it almost seems as if this were a field recording, but it sounds like a studio piece. Nicely done.
Got this on an lp of his called "Smoky Babe and his freinds: Hot Blues".
According to the sleeve, Harry Oster was at a jam session at Mable Lee Williams (Robert Pete Williams sister) house, when Smoky, a nieghbour, heard the comotion and swung by. Oster leant him his guitar as he'd pawned his own. Harry Oster new this dude was worth recording after his first few bars.
Thank you too much biz
