I really think that these guys were never in on "it". I have a feeling that they didn't find out till they were in orbit around the earth. They were forced into the situation by more than normal means. This would be consistant with the way these fine, "best-of-the-best" pilots are acting... They're struggling with it inside and do not feel comfortable not telling the truth to ppl.
