Before Damon was actually singing in the character of 2D he modified his range for the first album, you can hear how different he sounds. They made them animated to take the celebrity out of it. 2D and Murdoc would be interviewed instead of Damon and Jamie. He hated all that in blur. He did zero publicity as himself for plastic beach.

Damon said gorillaz isnt about the characters anymore, its about the collaboration. The artwork is just a way to express the tone. So the characters don't mean anything any more. Gorillaz is just a name.

@tdk2592 Well I don't know how much the characters meant to begin with, we didn't get to see much of them very often, and everyone knew Damon was doing the music, but I'm a huge fan of creativity and I loved the idea of an animated band so I'm glad they're still doing things with them.

It's almost like when Lennon and Yoko went around in a bag to take image out of the equation. Then it's just music, it's just the message. That's what Gorillaz is about now. You can hear the themes are much more present. The first album was loose in that sense.

@tdk2592 Even so, I still like most of the songs on their first album where as there are only a handful on Plastic Beach that I really enjoy.

@takineko You're kidding right? Half of the first album is just random experimental stuff which didn't amount to much and didn't sound great. Plastic Beach is probably the most fully-formed and consistent album Damon has ever done. Yes that includes the Blur albums which had a few duds on each album tbf. There's not a bad song on there whereas I could name several on the first album.

@ninjainscrubs Yeah, I can see its more consistant, but I enjoy the sound of the earlier albums more. No offense to Plastic Beach-- I just got my copy today. It might grow on me, Gorillaz music has a way of doing that.

@JesseReith1 its the real gorillaz, guy at the piano in the blue is damon albarn(2D), its just a live rehersal for their show in the states!!! you don't usually see the band.. their usually hidden!!

@p1nZo well you're right that the band is hidden, but the band is different from song to song (on the album). only Damon Albarn is always to find in a Gorillaz live act. These guys are not gorillaz in real life, cause there is no Gorillaz in real life, just different artist playing each number, so I guess you can say they usually are hidden, but it aren't necessarily the guys you see here :)
