To pro wrestling bashers, I train at an MMA training facility and people ribbed me for talking about pro wrestling but we started to talk about the old days, ROH and Japan and we started talking about Pancrase and the connection between Japanese Pro Wrestling and modern mixed martial arts.... now three months later you can catch someone doing a Sharpshooter or a 5 Knuckle Shuffle, yeah that guy is a super tough military cop so I wouldn't call him out for being a Cena fan.

Wrestling was a precursor to MMA, actually, back when Wrestling wasn't as fake. Inoki is a prime example of that.

MMA is simply a new term for a very old sport. A sport, not a scripted form of entertainment. The two are no more related than the show Miami Vice was related to real police work... and professional wrestling is no more a precursor to MMA than the former is to the latter.

The only thing that connects MMA and professional wrestling is the smarter fans who left wrestling once the real thing was to be had.

Old Japanese Wrestling, like the European catch wrestling of state fairs, always had a 'flexibility of realism' that doesn't exist in a real sport. Outcomes were often determined between contestants before a match... even if the competitors themselves were true fighters, which, I agree, many were.
