  • Dnt understand anything i guess i never can do animate anything i cnt even do a vid MY LIF SUCKS WHOLE DAY! TnT

  • OMG THXXXXXX

  • Thanks so much for this video! I like it!

  • @TheXtremeBanana its good you point out things like that, I'd have never thought it'd be mistaken that way. Lol.

that "(Video)" addition was to specify that this tutorial covers animating videos, not creating .gifs or the like. :)

  • It's good you put "(Video)" by the side of the video. I wouldn't have known it was a video if you hadn't put that there.

  • Hey, Kellie, you know that you can also use the paint bucket tool to fill in the background with the color you want erased, and then paint it white again with the bucket tool. Repeat this with every unwanted color and it is a lot faster and more effecient. I use this technique with outlining in a different color for my animations as well, and it is brilliant. Just another tip

  • I like this video. Pretty basic but just TOOOO USEFULL!

    :D

    Thank you!

  • OMG!!! THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH! I JUST FOUND OUT THAT I CAN ERASE JUST ONE COLOR!!! YOU MADE MY LIFE 10000000000 TIMES EASIER!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *does caramell dance*

  • My Windows Movie Maker doesn't look like yours. I have Windows Vista (I think), should it be different?

  • Help im bored

  • Borrd

  • thanks! i saw it some years ago,and i was worried i cant find t annymore, because it has helped me allot!

    thanks for this tutorial!

  • its realy help me and give me new hope to done my dream with an cartoon on cartoon network wish my luck :D

  • very helpful! ( it works for everything)

  • Gff

  • Download GIMP it's a free program like ms paint only it has layers so instead of doing that erase shit you can just delete the layer of the previous frame. Or you can even make the entire animation in GIMP, it's really cool

  • this really helps!!!!! THX!! :D

  • paint is for noobs.

  • good work.,.,

  • MS Paint? You Amaze me :O

I can't draw squat on that thing!

  • sry doubleposting XD Anyway, if you have pro computer (and time and patience of course), just go on and make a huge animation with fades, but if your comp is slow dont waste time for fading long animations, cause movie maker can stop anytime. And dont forget to save often:)

Thats all i can advise you, who wants to make animations using this technique.

    Again, nice work Kelly :)

  • I know this video is updated on 2007 but still the best. Nice work Kelly.

BtW i suggest using gimp or other drawing program that kan handle layers. (I use "paint tool sai"), that makes the whole thing much easier.

Using fade for smoothing the animation is a nice idea too, but be careful: too much effects make the rendering longer!

Well if you want short animations, it wont be a problem, butsome ppl who want to make a whole caartoon and have slower computer can have some difficulties

    outOFchars

  • not what i was lookin for but good for u putting ur time in to help...

I made a short vid but want some animation for the future... check out my channel pls,,,,,,,,, i want exposure for my music and its worth it.

  • how do you make the first frame

  • It worked on windows 7! :3

  • my paint wont rub out the background colour?

  • i pretty much figured out everything in this video on my own except at the end i was suprised to see how the fading makes everything smoother. that helped alot probably prevented alot of stress lmao so thank you. i alsom learned which programs i should upgrade to from reading the box at the beginning so thank you

  • brilliant

  • That was pretty good :o

  • AHHH MS PAINT!!!!!

  • This is awesome :OO

Didn't know you can simply animate with MS Paint, Movie Maker, mouse/tablet and some skills

Will want to try it out someday :D

  • this was the best tutorial for beginners like myself, thanks for the tips!

  • shit it wasted ma tym

  • Did you use a Mouse or Tablet to create this NICE Art / Video?

Love the music, ... calming. unlike most other users, with seriously annoying music.

  • hey when i tried to erase it erased the whole picture not the red

  • Thank you thank you so much! This is what i need

  • video wont play for me can you send me what you did please ;(

  • Wow! You make it really easy to understand!

I think I can attempt to animate something now! :)

    Thanks so much! :)

  • FU@K YOU YOU MADE A SITE WHAT INSULTS ME FINSHSENCE IN SED I DONT CARE HOW I SPELL UP ASS BITCH OFF YOUR MUMS A CRAP

  • Whenever I try to erase it both the black and red are erased.

  • You have a very good talent mabye one day you shall show your artwork to the world and they will appretiate your artistic beings :) (lol isound smart! XD)

  • Wahhh! Thank you so much for making this! I appreciate it :>

  • wow i learnt that paint actually has other tools!(tried it and it works on crappy Paint)

It'll probably come in handy. Tanx! ;D

  • what do you mean by click with mac?

  • awsome :D u rule ~~

  • Thank you soooo much!! This will help me alot I my animating!! :D

    sparrowfrost

  • music is very porno-esque

  • will the paint part work same for win 7?

  • :O at first i didnt get the whole erasing to the background thing but when i tried it i was all like O.O its more like, recoloring the lines or something. i didnt even know that existed!!!! xD thankyouu!

  • how do I make the movie maker to no fade???? I dont know???? please tell me!!

  • Or you could get flash.

  • you kow the 2 squares like the colouring box it has one at the top ad bottom, how do you change the colour of the bottom one?

  • Wow Thanks! Me amd my friends have been seeing all these cool videos on youtube, and wanted to make our own, but didnt know how, now we can. Great tutorial :)

  • and it doesn't just work on vista i have windows xp and it works for me

  • you can hold Ctrl + to make the eraser bigger

  • @AfroCal lmfao! Please, if you want to insult someone, at least finish your sentence. I would teach you proper English, but I feel the effort would be wasted since you apparently are incapable of following well written instructions. Granted, I do agree my tutorial is lacking. I was a lazy teenager just helping some people out. Seemed to be good enough for them. I would take your critique under consideration if it seemed legitmate. Instead it sounds as if you are another wannabe troll.

  • @KellieWellieBear Nice comment. :D

  • @KellieWellieBear ,,Just a lazy teenager trying to help some people out''!!!?? THIS WAS THE EXACT VIDEO, EXACT VIDEO that that taught me to animate when I was 8 years old!

  • you are the worst teacher i

  • i remember back when i had to animate with paint...

it brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it. back when i had no obligations, just screwing around. T^T don't take ur freedom for granted beginners

    I sure as hell did.

  • @XanWotomaki2 ....back before you really cared how great it looked, because anything that moved was automatically awesome...

Back when every animation was a feat, even if it only took five minutes....

And now, you spend hours testing one, tweaking the hell out of it, only to toss it because it's not just right... v.v /wipes tear

  • @KellieWellieBear

    exactly

man... i hate thinking about it T^T

  • hey i really like the erasing tool you used, but i cant seem to do it? ms paint is the default paint program that comes with windows yeah? i have windows 7 but that shouldnt matter should it?? i dont understand why i cant use the erase to replace the colours i've drawn with a dif colour, help??

  • @Angels2Hun Okay, I'm glad you asked that. The thing is, you have two colors: background and foreground. The foreground is the one that's 100% shown (black, in this case.) You have to right-click and erase, and that'll take away the foreground color (so the black is erased).

However, in W7, MS Paint has anti-aliasing so the edges are all fuzzy and erasing the black leaves you extra colored pixels. Use the Pencil tool (you can vary the size) or download the old paint, for better erasing. :)

  • @metallikato i had already managed to do it but thanks anyways. i was able to use the eraser tool, however, it doeasnt always work which is probably due to the reason you mentioned :)

  • Thanks for the Video..ill finnaly make better decent videos insteed of crappy comics now...YAY

  • YOU, sir (Madam?), are wonderful!

  • @Mayna00 (whispers) Madam

    And thank you~

  • Depressing music but good video

  • @TheRedHawksWrestling It was back in the day that youtube made you audioswap. :c

  • Oh my godness. Iam working since 2 Years with windows movie maker..and I never knew i could something like that with this -.- Thanks ♥

  • this actually gives me ideas with paint tool sai. Thanks for the tutorial it helped!

  • @TheBlackLotus18 Haha whoo! I use Paint Tool Sai for my artwork and animations too! :D

I plan to use it for my next set of tutorials. :3

  • I'm really bad at English so I didn't really get all the stuff, but I am getting now, that I must... umm... Anyway thanks I got at least idea how it works, it looks really hard so you did great work and thanks anyway. Oh, and sorry for any mistakes if there are, my English horrible...

  • @Feather418 It is fine, I understood the basics. :)

I talk to a lot of people who do not speak English much, so I know how it goes.

I hope it helped enough! I will try to make one that is easier to follow when I make a new one.

  • oh god im done for DX

  • Comment removed

  • ty :DD

  • Thanks this helped me with my dream to become a animator

  • um this is somewhat off topic but what program did u use to record the screen as you were making these frames?

  • @qwentonomore Camstudio :)

  • @KellieWellieBear thank you!

  • Hm, I've been considering trying animation, so thanks for making this! It was a big help. :)

  • @alittletoocrazy101 You're very welcome. :D

There are a lot of ways to go about it, especially since I made this. There's a few free programs that weren't around then, lol.

  • can u use avs video editor to make a animation

  • This was the first animation tutorial I ever watched..THANK YOU!! I was 7 or 8 years old when I watched it, and it really helped!! I really, really loved it!!

  • @Sailorsallyrainbow :D Oh wow, thanks for visiting again then!

  • Awesome!:D

Do you know if I can just draw the pictures by hand, and scan them in instead?? Since I prefer drawing by hand.

  • Its too bad the bew version of Moviemaker SUCKS! Knw a way i can download the old version?

  • mine still erases everything not just the black, hm...

  • you can also just save one picture as one use that same photo then when making your movement hit save as 2 and so on and soforth

  • ....theres a easier way to do this with Windows 7 paint and WMM.

  • WOW u are good at drawing with a mouse! i dont even know how u do it...

  • im a beginner animator (look at my channel) and i learned some tips that will help a lot thx so much u rock best turtorial ever!!

  • it really helped!!! tnx!!

  • im just wondering but kelli just say we are using ur pose like the character is running.... how do we close in? do we have to draw it closer or is there an effect on windows to make it come closer as the character runs?

  • is this free?

  • @tailsiscooll Yes. Everything in this video is free. :)

    Windows Movie Maker and Paint.

There's also Paint.Net now, and GIMP that are free.

  • @KellieWellieBear Actually, Paint is NOT free. It costs 150 dollars if you don't have it pre-downloaded on your computer.

  • Thanks for uploading this :33

  • What I do for getting rid of the previous frame's lines: use the paint bucket. Your top color should be (color of your frame lines here) and the bottom color should be white. Color the area touching the lines the same color, let go of the cursor, then right click. No more lines in that area of that color! Maybe I'll post a video tutorial tomorrow. Very nice, btw!

  • The eraser trick doesn't work on the new MS paint D: lol

But these are great hints/tips btw!

  • very impressive :))) check out some of my work ? x

  • this is hard :'(

  • You should just use "Pencil 0.4.4b" it's FREE...

I use it all the time in Linux Ubuntu, and Linux Mint... Also free...

  • I didnt know about that thing about the eraser tool. nice!

  • umm, dude have you ever heard of macromedia 8 or adobe flash cs5.these programs are for creating animations..

  • any idea as to how i can get ms paint?

  • @Kerrychanx It should come standardly on any Windows PC. But if you don't have it, you can download it from the Microsoft website. Or, you can download the program Paint.Net and I think that's pretty much a more advanced paint.

Also, there's GIMP too, which is free, and pretty much like a simpler Photoshop.

  • @KellieWellieBear No. It doesn't. It didn't come with my PC. It is not free, so Kerrychanx should probably get a new program.

  • @Kerrychanx ms paint is microsoft paint and its also Paint

  • i am working on a short film that has a stickperson running up hill

  • Lovely animation!

  • cool can you also do these things in MS paint from Windows 7?

I mean the eraser thing is different...

  • im doing what your doing but i cant do it!

  • @riannasdad its pretty simple, you create something you want to animate with paint and then click save as and then add the red lines, erase the black lines and then turn those lines black, and then keep doing that until you have the most "frames" you want and then import them into windows movie maker

  • Ahh this is so helpful. Thank you! :)

  • Wonderful stuff. Thanks

  • MS paint is USELSS Paint.NET is free and you could do it an less than half the time not kidding, download it.

  • I don't have WMM. Anyway I can't go on internet with the PC side of my mac. Can you help me?

  • Comment removed

  • @sophiethepegasus Have you used your Leopard Install Disk? It includes drivers that the Windows side needs in order to use your Mac's hardware (example, Airport wireless)

  • you has teh same desktop as meh ;Shy

  • @IMagicPanda Really now? :D

    Neat *high fives*

  • Before I even saw this vid I never knew I had Windows Movie Maker!! lol but now Im working on a simple animation, Thank you so much for this vid! It helps alot!

  • i was wondering..... whats a tablet? e.o i hear it like every where

  • @TheColorfulPup A tablet is a touch sensitive pad with a special pen that allows you to draw on it as if you were drawing on paper, but instead it translates it into your art program, for instance photoshop.

Google "Tablet PC" to get more of a look. ;)

  • @KellieWellieBear If I wanted to make a cartoon series, how long do you think it would take for me to do one?

  • @godzilla1077 To be perfectly honest there's no way I can tell you, because it depends on each person, the programs they use, the tools, the amount of frames that they draw or need to... how fast you draw, etc.

I can tell you that it is very very time consuming. But if you enjoy it, then I look forward to seeing what you do. :)

  • @godzilla1077 for my experience, don't even try unless you are willing and able to spend all your free time doing it. i've actually been using this MS paint method for many years with windows movie maker, photoshop for light backgrounds and shadows and anime studio 5. it all depends on how much you "want" your anime series made, but i can tell you that a 13 episode series can be made in 2 months :)

  • @kaorushima99kyou Sounds interesting, and since I'm very new to this, Id say I may take double the time to do 13 in 2 months.

  • btw it oni works with the line or curved line right? pencil tool will be erased am i right?

  • what size dus it have to be to make it full screen

  • Thanks But does I have to use A mouse? another question How did you erase just the Color but not the Line?

  • omg....THANK YOU SO MUCH <3 I didn't get it at first...like how to do any of this -.- I looked at like 50 vids about it an like I didnt get it...I have a bamboo tablet and yeah I use the corel thing.... thanks :D

  • @Kagomay10 Oh wow, I'm glad this helped! Thanks for letting me know it did. ^^

  • @KellieWellieBear :DDD your like my best friend now x3 lol do you watch anniiimmmeee?? :D

  • @Kagomay10 xD!

Why yes... yes I do. .w.

Let's carry this to channels though. :P

  • How do you record yourself working on MSPaint?! Is there a program? Can I download it from somewhere? PLEASE TELL ME! T^T

  • @silverdragon1314 There are a few screen recording programs out there, but the particular one I used was the free version of camstudio

  • @KellieWellieBear *glomps you* OH MY GOSH, YOU ACTUALLY RESPONDED!!!

    THANK YOU!!!!!!

  • @silverdragon1314 I do typically respond to videos, if it's not the same question that's answered in the description and redirected from the comments a million times. XD

  • @KellieWellieBear I've asked, like, 10 people before you and none of them have gotten back to me, so, it was just kinda a shock you told me. ^^;

  • THX KELLIE :D owe ya one XD

  • @iproclaimyou You're very welcome, I'd love to see what you make :D

  • awsum >=o ty!

  • this song fucking sucks

  • Thank you so much Ame-Chan!! I'm a new animator so I don't want anything wayy complicated and this seems like it will work very well and it is nowhere close to complicated! I'm gonna try this out right away! <3

  • @Tatoogodess Good luck! 8D

  • I used to animate a lot as a kid on paint shop, and I'm actually very depressed now cause I never thought of this -.-.

  • @chocolatebunnynick13 *pats back* I know that feeling all too well.

When I was a kid, I used to animate using a greeting card creation software where I had to manually add up an input timeframes for when the image and audio started, stopped, and transitioned... instead of just doing this and using WMM. OTL

  • @KellieWellieBear I think the pat on the back was a little much :P

  • @chocolatebunnynick13 D:!

But I always pat people's backs when I share their pain. LOL

  • @KellieWellieBear FINE!!! DX

    (sigh)

    Then Pat away....

  • @chocolatebunnynick13 Q~Q *gives you chocolate instead*?

  • @KellieWellieBear YES!!!!!

    How did you know?!?! :'D

  • nice one dude. check my simple flash anime at youtube. transformer optimus prime vs darth stewie griffin

  • how do you change the eraser thingy

  • thank you:D

  • what if you just wannn make simple shapes and stick men?

  • @TheGreatImpulse Search Pivot Editor

  • YOU ARE SO AMAZING!!!!!! Thank you sooo much!!!! I always see people do these awesome animations on there and I'm always wondering how the heck they do this stuff!!!! Thank you!!!!!!

  • @Tigergirl7707 I'm glad this helps! :D

  • Thanks for your tutorial it really helped, I'll use your advice for my next animation!!

  • wow. That is so magical!!! I can't belive all my drawings with lines and I HAD to erase some of the important parts and its all RUINED >.< thx for the "magical" tip on the color switching thingy!!!

  • wow this is good and very helpful but is the eraser trick can only work on paint or can it work on gimp..? cuz if it can I'm going to animate!

  • @bsteven93 I've never tried it on GIMP, actually. o.O

If it works let me know~!

  • @bsteven93 i have GIMP and i believe that all you need to do is open the picture you want to trass over add an inviseable layer and then delete the orginal when your done THEN color it in and CHANGE the name of the picture you just made ccuase if you dont itll replace the origanl picture

  • @bsteven93 I think that on gimp the erase trick won't work if you didn't already find that out but you can use the layers like this. You make your first frame and save or whatever then you go back to gimp and make a new layer under the old one (first frame) and lower the older layers oppacity, then you can start drawing to your new layer and you'll see everything you have in your old one. When your done you delete the old layer and save to a new image ande then repeat :D

  • i have a question? i have paint and movie maker but i have no clue as to weither if it ms paint. can you only do it on ms paint? or world any paint do?
