  • This made me want to be a photo journalist, not a photographer. I don't want to take pictures because i like to, I want to take them because i need to tell a story.

  • This is one of the best documentaries I've ever seen.

  • show the full movie you will o a good thing

  • @DonMichaelBrown, are you nuts?

  • In the doc. he reads a letter from a person re: one of his assingments in Indonesia. the reader only gets $396 a month from SS/US. Does Mr. Nachtwey send some of his commisions to the people/situations? I wonder?

I can't sympathise with his so called troubled heart when I see him casually sipping a beverage in NYC loft. Or, snoozing at 37,000' while flying first class. Not to mention taking part in a doc. about himself?

Having a retrospective of his work @ ICP... he's on the take. hmm?

  • @DonMichaelBrown

Easy to criticize a man who works so hard and puts himself in situations of great risk on a regular basis, huh? Being a mere human myself, I can forgive the man a few creature comforts in the time between his self-less acts of bearing witness to things that you or I can only hope never to see firsthand. With a body of work as important as his, a retrospective, a documentary, seems like a minor indulgence in sharing the story of how, and why, he does what he does.

  • @DonMichaelBrown So basically you're saying he should put himself at this tremendous risk, take these amazing photos, use his skill in a way he loves and inform people of the horrors of war...but shouldn't be rewarded materially for his sacrifices?

You are obviously a tremendous human being and I hope you live in as interesting times as James does and that all your wishes come true.

  • @DonMichaelBrown thank you for your inspirational comment Don. If I had the energy I would reply in detail in an attempt to help you understand. I'm just not sure whether I'd get anywhere with you though.

  • @DonMichaelBrown jealousy, envy and ego are really ugly Don. Probably what cause these wars that JN wants to stop. I am sure he would be happy to be out of a job - no wars.

  • @DonMichaelBrown, do you have the intelligence to actually comprehend what this man and others like him puts themselves through in order to get these pictures that have moved the world? They go through absolute hell. They see things nobody should bear witness to, executions, gun battles, bombing watching their colleagues and friends die before their eyes and Mr. Nachtwey was even at ground zero on 9/11 and still at he site when the buildings came down. You try do all that.

  • Quand je parle de Photographie je pense aux ReportersPhoto. Quand je pense aux Reporters je pense à James Nachtwey , c'est le plus grand. Seul regret, les photographes ne changent pas le Monde.

  • i really, really recomend susan sontag's "Regarding the Pain of Others" if you care about war and photography. it really makes you understand the construcion of the photographic image as a very conscious excercise

  • May God bless you James, your work is amazing and transcends frontiers. Keep safe and continue touching hearts and evoking change around the world

  • i just recently found out he worked with Greg Marinovich, Joao Silva(hope he has a speedy recovery, btw), Ken Oosterbroek, and Kevin Carter in southe africa in the early 90's. in fact he was friends with Kevin, helping him get references an new cameras when he won the pulitzer; he was also in Thokoza the day Ken was killed. He was one of the ones helping Greg when he was severly wounded at the same time.

anyway, i really look up to these guys, they're a special group.

  • Incredible.

  • I was having troubles deciding a future for myself (recent highschool graduate). I was considering photography, but to me it didn't match that level of prestige that other things I was considering would. When I watched this movie I realized the true importance of photography. I have decided to be a photojournalist. I want to create change.

  • This inspired me to do photography and opened my eyes to the reality many people out there live everyday. James Nachtwey you are an inspiration and a revolutionary! Peace.

  • your work is very great . you have touched me with your simplicity!!

  • real great said, James

  • James, you are wonderful

  • It must be possible to end war through photography. Thats why I'm picking up my camera and expose war even further. Your my hero Mr.Nacktwey.

  • @Basstrum Im afraid it is not possible. Regardless, it is a good experience to document these events

  • This documentary made me realise i wanted to be a documentary filmmaker.

    Extremely good, unbelievably powerful.

  • In group out group stereotyping & subjegation is as old as recorded history

We need to destroy people's of other CULTures. The existence of other world views threatens our fantasy of an eternal afterlife for obedience to & justification of the systems of the sperm club we are born into

  • Thank you for your good work! Keep calling attention to this!

  • really i olve it

  • awesome photographer & person!!

  • Fantastic!!!

  • Amazing! The photos of James Nachtwey, are "a strong bash"to the uncompomisings people and to these who believes that the wars may solve problems of the countries!

  • what camera and lens he used?

  • This movie is too inspiring. Every aspiring photographer should have it.

I'm 15 and am well into the photojournalistic approach. Take a look at my portfolio, if you have time. You won't regret it.

  • Ich habe den film gsehen er ist wirklich sehr gut.

...aber geht sehr unter die haut!

  • one of my heroes ...

    God bless James Nachtwey forever.....

  • very touching trailer

this movie is now on my to-watch-list :)

  • All my respect to your means of witnessing what is going on our earth and how bad human being could be.

Thank you for your piece of art and your courage

  • By far one of the most talented photojournalists out there. I have watched this documentary several times and am still captivated by his ideas and the stories behind his images. incredible.

  • Superbe!

  • He shows his extreme ideological position when he says...

"Nothing is worth letting things get to the point where that happens to one person, nevermind thousands"

In Nachtway's view, the U.S. Civil War, WW2, the U.S. Revolutionary wars.... all unjust and "not worth it" , for the suffering of even one individual.

    What a dangerously confused vision.

  • Shows you what a extreme ideologue Nachtway is when he says..

"Nothing is worth letting things get to the point of that happening to one person, nevermind thousands".

So in essence, he's saying that no war was ever justified, because of the pain felt by as few as one person is too much of a cost.

    That's foolish.

  • sooo crazy

    def gonna rent this out

  • What an amazing inspiring articulate talented man

  • an amazing doucmentry ..deeply compassionate and hard to watch :(

  • why do all the anti-war pricks go on these videos, the world isn't going to stop fighting just because a few people have never been or served in the military and have no idea whats its like so they just flame.

  • was cameras is he using? i only know its a canon.

  • Why photograph war? Is it possible to put an end to a form of human behavior, which has existed throughout history, by means of photography? We believe so.

  • What an awesome Documentary this is..

    Go get gals...

    You ll be pleased...

  • "Provoke a sense of humanity" means being aware of, maybe understand. A photograph helps, but only when we stop and look, and only when we're allowed to see it. But more often, I think, we choose to look away. Maybe it's easier not to see, but then we are blind.

  • can you send me information about james nachtwey

im doing a research on him thanks

  • Amazing video and photographer.

  • Fuck. I love this.

  • my hero. my exact same goal

  • its occured to me that if everyone could be there just once, to see for themselves, what white phosphorus does to the face of a child.........

  • what kind of gay ass war is that?

    fucking rocks and slingshots!lol

  • its true..as long as there are people who value the death of an american over the life of there own child there will be war..nobody wants it but it happens and we shouldnt point the finger at our leaders...

  • I'm an amateur photographer myself. and i admit I'd never have the guts to even get close to a war zone.

  • Its very easy for a person to say freedom is not free if they are sitting in there cosy little houses typing at their computers ,but Freedom can be free. War is not always the answer to everything. Its easy to send someone to die from you when you yourself are making little to no sacrifice. I think world peace is possible. It isn't a political belief, It's a state of enlightenment. The point were one no longer needs violence to communicate a message or force a point. Pray for that.

  • one way to end all wars....get Russia and China to invade the US and regime change 'em.

  • you'd be throwing rocks and petrol bombs too if the Chinese ever decide to invade your rat infested trailor park.

  • why does it seem to me that all Americans are the same? that even your humanists are biased?

  • after many years in the wordl conflits & wars the violence what, scan doing for can say support the means in the wordl for stopped the wars can you imposed your opinions evrey personn or the some people in the wordl for ledr your campaing sensibilisation thk faf

  • Two Thums Up!

  • Photography is entirely subjective, with relative value...the cornerstone of his philosophy, that it invokes a sense of humanity, is simply a reflection of what appeals to -him- as a photography fan, and likewise his goals as a photography creator. We duplicate what we are drawn to the most, but it will always fall on deaf ears to anyone who doesn't share the mindset. The goal of "invoking change" is entirely pretentious, and laughable.

  • I'd like to underline a passage of Natchwey's definition of war photographer: "...to create pictures powerful enough to overcome the deluding effects of Mass-Media, and shake people out of their indifference."

This is a great endeavour, and for sure the images we can watch in this video give the idea of what Natchwey means with this statement.

  • bravo!

  • Thanks YouTube for featuring this, Nachtwey is a wonderful photographer, love his work.

  • wait a minute? was that an actual firefight between those guys throwing rock and slingshots? cause theyre brave for doing that... very brave... great video 10 stars

  • Photo's Don't forget. Soldiers Don't forget But will, in their own way.

The general population Does forget with the click of the remote.

The world (WE) have a very short attention span.

    History never lets us forget.

  • as you watch this video i want u to put urself in the place of the individuals photographed and u will see the image james nechtwey wants you to see.

  • he is a great man he have honor

  • Amazing.. so amazing..

  • Great Job!

  • good picture, good coloring B&W, good angel, i very like james nachtwey. james nachtwey the best. tngx

  • good photo i like, biutiful picture, and angel is natular, and james nachtwey good photograpy. tngx

  • great man, great photographer but in acting, cinematography, scenarios and entertaining you should work more because the information ur telling is wonderful but the video is maded so boring that not everyone will stay to see the whole video. but u ar a great photographer I admit that.

  • to James Nachtwey,我太崇拜了,谢谢你。

  • i hope that i can become like james one day, snapping photos in dangerous places.I salute James!

  • this guy sounds so emo...hes seen too much violence

  • Ever wonder why "live" images or photographs of war are never put on the tv media? It very obvious.

  • "...where that happens to even one person - let alone thousands"

    thank you

  • I'm sorry, but as much as we desire peace, there will always be war, inevitably, inescapably, without fail, for all of our time as humans. No photographer, no matter his tenacity and truly inspiring ideas, can change culture.

  • The documentary is so good, go and watch it!

  • what hurts more than watching all of this is..is sitting at home watching and knowing theres nothing you can do to stop this..

humans are the cause of this world's demise.

  • i agree....animals meantime have become morally and ethically superior to human beings!

  • @LkzChiC That is true but we still have to try, even if failure is almost certain if there is even a chance of change the smallest amount that's more than enough to keep going ,to keep fighting against the inequality's of the world. What's worse trying and possibly failing or not trying and defiantly failing.

    Namaste

  • @LkzChiC we can't stop it but we can make others see it as he did

  • @LkzChiC - nah. we just think we are. We are not the important. Earth doesn't care that much what we do or don't do here. On a long enough timeline the world will see us come, see us go, and go on with itself. Same as it's done with all other species now extinct. So, in summary.. don't give your or us that much credit. Very short-sighted and arrogant. That's not a dig at all, think about it. Really think about it.

  • @LkzChiC Well said

An equal experience i have facing similar to this one, simply because i know it's one of the main causes to all this, is the experience of ignorance. It proceeds people, and it's all but vanity to try talking to someone who's ignorance is ahead of them. They don't know when they don't know, and the beliefs made from people lacking the direct experience of a reality are more then often highly insulting and crud to the reality they lack. It's too easy to have no conscience.

  • wow, amazing. im a photographer.

  • It has to be a worldwide effort as one since when one group becomes peaceful it seems another goup takes what they consider an opportunity and starts a war with them. Only a third party can stop this from happening. Now that is the art of war.

  • amazing

  • This really shows us the REAL side of war!

  • So true. It's real, not glamorized or cushioned. It's very real and sometimes difficult to watch.

  • anyone whose watched The Simpsons finds this hilarious...if they dont theyre in denial

  • i dont.. really get it. there are better war photographers

  • he shows how the world is when it plunges into war. complete respect to you James Nachtwey and what a great piece of work!!!

  • Mankind must put an end to war before war puts an end to mankind.

    John F. Kennedy

  • damn how is this brave man still alive :/

  • The world is not a safe place that makes me want to cry

  • hay naku....

    kau na magaling

  • Respect from Indonesia.

One of the country in which law still values little. Especially in some particular places.

I support every means possible to stop war. Such fruitless and painful attempt to solve problem, I can never fathom human's greed to continue it.

  • indonesians need education. not democracy.

  • does steven wright narrate this

  • great documentary ...

FYI the interpreter didn't tell the truth (min 2:50)

  • OHHH MYY GOD. . . :0

  • LEGEND!!!!

  • It is funny how true the commentary is, yet when we finally protest it is when we do it at the expense of the Soldier in the field. Our collective disdain for any Military action causes us to cower until the tipping point. We stew in apathy until the threat has become so great that we must engage it with a mass of force rather than engage it when a slight use of force would have sufficed. I am the Soldier who carries the burden, I pray for peace more than most ... but I also know the consequence

  • mind his work fellas he is a filthy war profiter

profits from the suffering of the people

he needs to get on the gunsight

  • ok next he talks of war being the ability to negate humanity. its trying to negate a competitor or a person of a diff belief system. even with the changes he is very on mark with this stance in context.

  • well im sure to get flamed here. he states war is something of human nature which if u look at any pack animals is shown to be more a thing of competion in nature itself. i remmber when they relased the cali condors here in AZ in the grand canyon and they kept being killed. all the fuss was over how someone would pay yet in the end it was the bald eagles themselaves killing this bird over reasourceses.

  • hell yeah, maybe we will finally learn what war does to people. what a journey

  • Just Genius

    ir touched me deep inside

  • Very well done! Way to StandUP against war in a way I've never felt. This is very powerful!

  • wars are not going to stop because some guy takes pictures of it.

  • I watched clips of this in my digital photography class at RISD,it was really eye opening and made me see the strength of a photography in a completely new light. Very impacting.

  • indonesians speaking..

  • why the anemic sounding voice affectation? slingshot wars? huh?

  • wow

  • too many people on this earth, that is what drives war.

the earth's population must be stabilized at a sustainable level. what's it gonna take? how many health crises, how many starvations must happen?

oh shit, i forgot to reproduce, i failed.

  • First of all, amazing words by James.

To me photography is whats inside the photographers mind. As he is taking the pics he is the closest one to those issues, so he has a great deal by understanding and to controling those terrible living concepts in his personal perspective. To us, the photography has been taken by someone else, so those images are a bit further in our consciousness. The problem is, no matter how far or near it is to ourselves, it is taking place in OUR world anyway.

  • I understand what the guy is trying to do. But global peace is something that will not happen for a very long time. War has been integral part of human society since the very beginning.

Everyone cannot get along with everyone so things like this are bound to happen.

First Arguments, Then Fights, Then Battles, Then Wars.

I admire his work and his ambition, but as horrific as war is, it is part of the Human Society and it will never go.

  • great video.. i would grade your photos 10/10. Great. Much respect. i would love to see the hole documentry.

  • what a cool hold on

  • it is hard on making a comment for such a strong work, but i must say that I am glad just by knowing that there are a few people with such a corage for trying to help our existence.

    Congratulations James Nachtwey.

  • you call this war?

  • lifes a bitch

    and then you die

    so fuck it all

    and lets get high

  • Bravo.

    Serious respect.

    I love your honesty.

  • oh my god go obama!

  • xD

do we really need a war???can't their be peace and solving problems through negotitions? What are we trying to prove with the wars?? our power, strenght o our inhumanity towards innocent lives?

  • Peace only comes from the barrel of a gun.

  • This is amazing. All war is unjustified.

  • shocking

  • I covered wars ya know!

  • it is true that media is not playing the part to bring truth to real world, which is shame for all of us. I really appreciate James Nachtwey for his work.

Further more to the fact why Muslims are being a soft target everywhere in the world, and even knowing the truth why media and people with sense are not coming forward to bring an end to all this hatred.

    No offence to anyone.

  • What Kind OF Camera Does He Use?

  • War is so pointless

  • i whould like to do that

  • sub for sub anyone and for friends

  • lol are slingshots and rocks teh new ak47?

  • ...wars will persist as long as ignorance and desperation can be harvested.

  • thEy had a sling shot common!!!!!!!!!

  • Rock Throwing War Ftw? lol..

  • Excellent work i love it

  • powerful powerful piece.

  • An inspiring life of compassion to bring truthful images. May we have peace inside in order to bring peace to the world.

  • sort of borring not the best modavational speaker but you can get alot of excelent quotes out of the speech... hes no Winston Churchill

  • Next Enemy: Mass Media Though I know that many of the people who work for the mass media, are not bad people. They are just under a strict guideline set by people in power.

  • That's a true warrior, a man who is greater than his weapon.

  • blah blah blah

  • does anyone know where I can go if I wanted to kill at random, beet my wife on a daily basis, cut off heads to get virgins, smell bad, eat with my hands, wash in a sespool of decayed water and generaly hate the world. I know I wouldnt want any other country to come in and ruin all this wonderment vote Obama!

  • I,ve been there as a U.S.MARINE and what u say is true. 10s of thousands tortured by islamist, no hope for freedom in the future, women treated bruitily with no hope of change. So if you lived like that would u rather stay like that forever or would u rather a powerfull friend try to help even though u know the price for hope and freedom will be great. We are where we are now because people are not meant to live like dogs. Some say they want it that way its there coulture, well no they dont

  • I totally respect what this dude is doing, but in all reality, unless we severely curb birth rates on this planet, we need war, and death, to help cull the population problem this world faces.

  • Thank you for showing us,the pain of the world. Some of us live a comfortable life, and its nice to get reminded to know whats really going on.I saw your documentary on tv a while back.

  • Made me think, thank you!

    Respect.

  • Much respect to James Nachtwey.

  • I think I saw this documentary on BBC. It was great.

  • Wow. THis is deep..... He is good

  • yeah cool video but war with slingshots....cmon lol

  • dude im gettin this.

  • thank you

  • he works on the same office that death does... he photographs her dancing around those who fight in wars... and yet... just a few care about guys like him...

    amazing vid!

  • these movies are hilarious, i find it extremely entertaining to see people of other nations, (photographers, reporters, journalists) trying to focus their country of origins attention on another countries plights, when more often than not, these same people have the SAME problems of disease and hunger in the very cities they hail from....yet are ignorant, callous even,... when it comes to help their fellow countryman..

    Erik Smith.

  • very very good!

  • his voice sounds like dexter

  • I admire his dedication and supreme ability to create how things really are but there are those people who knowing this still promote hate and the wrong and suffering war brings. Are these people so out of touch with human emotions that they lack moral judgement. Or are they just crazy.

  • "...to evoke a sense of umanity."

"...to create pictures powerful enough to overcome the deluding effects of the mass-media and shake people out of their indifference!"

  • Great clip, you have some good points

  • wow this guy's voice has like a heavy bass, when I turn my volume up I feel my organs shaking :O

  • "Shake people out of their indifference" - this might be the one important task in our century...

All of my respect to James Nachtwey.

  • this is what happens when you vote republican
