This made me want to be a photo journalist, not a photographer. I don't want to take pictures because i like to, I want to take them because i need to tell a story.
In the doc. he reads a letter from a person re: one of his assingments in Indonesia. the reader only gets $396 a month from SS/US. Does Mr. Nachtwey send some of his commisions to the people/situations? I wonder?
I can't sympathise with his so called troubled heart when I see him casually sipping a beverage in NYC loft. Or, snoozing at 37,000' while flying first class. Not to mention taking part in a doc. about himself?
Having a retrospective of his work @ ICP... he's on the take. hmm?

They go through absolute hell. They see things nobody should bear witness to, executions, gun battles, bombing watching their colleagues and friends die before their eyes and Mr. Nachtwey was even at ground zero on 9/11 and still at he site when the buildings came down. You try do all that.

i really, really recomend susan sontag's "Regarding the Pain of Others" if you care about war and photography. it really makes you understand the construcion of the photographic image as a very conscious excercise
i just recently found out he worked with Greg Marinovich, Joao Silva(hope he has a speedy recovery, btw), Ken Oosterbroek, and Kevin Carter in southe africa in the early 90's. in fact he was friends with Kevin, helping him get references an new cameras when he won the pulitzer; he was also in Thokoza the day Ken was killed. He was one of the ones helping Greg when he was severly wounded at the same time.
anyway, i really look up to these guys, they're a special group.

By far one of the most talented photojournalists out there. I have watched this documentary several times and am still captivated by his ideas and the stories behind his images. incredible.
He shows his extreme ideological position when he says...
"Nothing is worth letting things get to the point where that happens to one person, nevermind thousands"
In Nachtway's view, the U.S. Civil War, WW2, the U.S. Revolutionary wars.... all unjust and "not worth it" , for the suffering of even one individual.

"Provoke a sense of humanity" means being aware of, maybe understand. A photograph helps, but only when we stop and look, and only when we're allowed to see it. But more often, I think, we choose to look away. Maybe it's easier not to see, but then we are blind.

Its very easy for a person to say freedom is not free if they are sitting in there cosy little houses typing at their computers ,but Freedom can be free. War is not always the answer to everything. Its easy to send someone to die from you when you yourself are making little to no sacrifice. I think world peace is possible. It isn't a political belief, It's a state of enlightenment. The point were one no longer needs violence to communicate a message or force a point. Pray for that.

Photography is entirely subjective, with relative value...the cornerstone of his philosophy, that it invokes a sense of humanity, is simply a reflection of what appeals to -him- as a photography fan, and likewise his goals as a photography creator. We duplicate what we are drawn to the most, but it will always fall on deaf ears to anyone who doesn't share the mindset. The goal of "invoking change" is entirely pretentious, and laughable.
I'd like to underline a passage of Natchwey's definition of war photographer: "...to create pictures powerful enough to overcome the deluding effects of Mass-Media, and shake people out of their indifference."
This is a great endeavour, and for sure the images we can watch in this video give the idea of what Natchwey means with this statement.

On a long enough timeline the world will see us come, see us go, and go on with itself. Same as it's done with all other species now extinct. So, in summary.. don't give your or us that much credit. An equal experience i have facing similar to this one, simply because i know it's one of the main causes to all this, is the experience of ignorance. It proceeds people, and it's all but vanity to try talking to someone who's ignorance is ahead of them.They don't know when they don't know,and the beliefs made from people lacking the direct experience of a reality are more then often highly insulting and crud to the reality they lack. It's too easy to have no conscience.
It has to be a worldwide effort as one since when one group becomes peaceful it seems another goup takes what they consider an opportunity and starts a war with them. Only a third party can stop this from happening. Now that is the art of war.
It is funny how true the commentary is, yet when we finally protest it is when we do it at the expense of the Soldier in the field. Our collective disdain for any Military action causes us to cower until the tipping point. We stew in apathy until the threat has become so great that we must engage it with a mass of force rather than engage it when a slight use of force would have sufficed. ok next he talks of war being the ability to negate humanity. its trying to negate a competitor or a person of a diff belief system. even with the changes he is very on mark with this stance in context.
well im sure to get flamed here. he states war is something of human nature which if u look at any pack animals is shown to be more a thing of competion in nature itself. i remmber when they relased the cali condors here in AZ in the grand canyon and they kept being killed. all the fuss was over how someone would pay yet in the end it was the bald eagles themselaves killing this bird over reasourceses.
I watched clips of this in my digital photography class at RISD,it was really eye opening and made me see the strength of a photography in a completely new light. Very impacting.
To me photography is whats inside the photographers mind. As he is taking the pics he is the closest one to those issues, so he has a great deal by understanding and to controling those terrible living concepts in his personal perspective. To us, the photography has been taken by someone else, so those images are a bit further in our consciousness. The problem is, no matter how far or near it is to ourselves, it is taking place in OUR world anyway.
I understand what the guy is trying to do. But global peace is something that will not happen for a very long time. War has been integral part of human society since the very beginning.
Everyone cannot get along with everyone so things like this are bound to happen.

I admire his work and his ambition, but as horrific as war is, it is part of the Human Society and it will never go.

these movies are hilarious, i find it extremely entertaining to see people of other nations, (photographers, reporters, journalists) trying to focus their country of origins attention on another countries plights, when more often than not, these same people have the SAME problems of disease and hunger in the very cities they hail from....yet are ignorant, callous even,... when it comes to help their fellow countryman..
I admire his dedication and supreme ability to create how things really are but there are those people who knowing this still promote hate and the wrong and suffering war brings. Are these people so out of touch with human emotions that they lack moral judgement. Or are they just crazy.

@LkzChiC That is true but we still have to try, even if failure is almost certain if there is even a chance of change the smallest amount that's more than enough to keep going ,to keep fighting against the inequality's of the world. What's worse trying and possibly failing or not trying and defiantly failing.

@LkzChiC - nah. we just think we are. We are not the important. Earth doesn't care that much what we do or don't do here. On a long enough timeline the world will see us come, see us go, and go on with itself. Same as it's done with all other species now extinct. So, in summary.. don't give your or us that much credit. Very short-sighted and arrogant. That's not a dig at all, think about it. Really think about it.

An equal experience i have facing similar to this one, simply because i know it's one of the main causes to all this, is the experience of ignorance. It proceeds people, and it's all but vanity to try talking to someone who's ignorance is ahead of them.They don't know when they don't know,and the beliefs made from people lacking the direct experience of a reality are more then often highly insulting and crud to the reality they lack. It's too easy to have no conscience.

It has to be a worldwide effort as one since when one group becomes peaceful it seems another goup takes what they consider an opportunity and starts a war with them. Only a third party can stop this from happening. Now that is the art of war.

It is funny how true the commentary is, yet when we finally protest it is when we do it at the expense of the Soldier in the field. Our collective disdain for any Military action causes us to cower until the tipping point. We stew in apathy until the threat has become so great that we must engage it with a mass of force rather than engage it when a slight use of force would have sufficed. well im sure to get flamed here. he states war is something of human nature which if u look at any pack animals is shown to be more a thing of competion in nature itself. i remmber when they relased the cali condors here in AZ in the grand canyon and they kept being killed. all the fuss was over how someone would pay yet in the end it was the bald eagles themselaves killing this bird over reasourceses.

First of all, amazing words by James.
To me photography is whats inside the photographers mind. As he is taking the pics he is the closest one to those issues, so he has a great deal by understanding and to controling those terrible living concepts in his personal perspective. To us, the photography has been taken by someone else, so those images are a bit further in our consciousness. The problem is, no matter how far or near it is to ourselves, it is taking place in OUR world anyway.

I understand what the guy is trying to do. But global peace is something that will not happen for a very long time. War has been integral part of human society since the very beginning.
Everyone cannot get along with everyone so things like this are bound to happen.
First Arguments, Then Fights, Then Battles, Then Wars.
I admire his work and his ambition, but as horrific as war is, it is part of the Human Society and it will never go.

it is true that media is not playing the part to bring truth to real world, which is shame for all of us. I really appreciate James Nachtwey for his work.
Further more to the fact why Muslims are being a soft target everywhere in the world, and even knowing the truth why media and people with sense are not coming forward to bring an end to all this hatred.

I,ve been there as a U.S.MARINE and what u say is true. 10s of thousands tortured by islamist, no hope for freedom in the future, women treated bruitily with no hope of change. So if you lived like that would u rather stay like that forever or would u rather a powerfull friend try to help even though u know the price for hope and freedom will be great. these movies are hilarious, i find it extremely entertaining to see people of other nations, (photographers, reporters, journalists) trying to focus their country of origins attention on another countries plights, when more often than not, these same people have the SAME problems of disease and hunger in the very cities they hail from....yet are ignorant, callous even,... when it comes to help their fellow countryman..
