F1 needs simple but sensible rules that ensure cars that are properly fast and with appealing looks: ex. Power levels around 850-900 bhp, wider slicks for more mechanical grip, aero-rules that favour decent looking wing - and body design!
F1 without rules and regulations would be empty and boring, with cost sky rocketing and very few teams running and even fewer being competitive!
Regulations should be simple and cost effective, ensuring development are made in less expensive areas!
I don’t fear the downsizing of the engines to lower revving turbo-engines as long as power levels are high!
I think big car manufactures would be more prone to enter F1 and spend money there with development of road relevant technology in sight, and with downsizing/Turbo engines being the future for road cars, smaller turbo engines (that should have more torque) in F1 would be of more interest that 18000 RPM normally aspirated engines!
people say the sound of a CVT is bad, but if you're an actual racing fan and spectate races, the doppler effect will take care of it. The cars will seem to rev up :P.
F1s would have sounded like TIE figthers.... don't tell me thats not cool.
Ah, the good old days when my Williams was a force to be reckoned!
This CVT system (similar in principle to the one's you will find in most road scooters), could have made the FW's even more competitive, but FIA seems to ban everything F1 is supposed to be, a lab for technical inovation.
I'm glad it got banned. This was more stuff taken away from driver skill. This added to active suspension added to traction control and launch control would have made the driver useless. I'm glad the 1994 rules were set. I don't believe the sudden lost of aids was part of Senna's tragedy.
the driver aids would have prevented the bottoming out in the first place. Driver useless? Thats questionable, because even if the cars are supposedly easier to drive, to drive them at the limit becomes even harder.
@tkpenalty Exactly. By pushing technology to further and further limits, the drivers are endowed with more capability. Put a race car driver in a machine that exudes confidence by having innovation and technology in all the right amounts and he/she will be more confident in driving and being aggressive. The extra physical strain would also force them to become fitter and really show that race car drivers are, in fact, athletes.
^ F1 need proper technological innovation, not stupid rules to ban anything new because it doesn't cater to the lowest common denominator, the driver worshipers.
@darkoneforce2 CVT was invented. There's your innovation. There's no need for F1 to go around wasting money on this kind of technology, if it's already been ported, and efficiently, into road cars, and has been used for decades in other machines.
Wow he looks like and action figure from the 70's here Coulthar. That head is way to big than rest of his body :O. Hehe! Nevermind this is a young Coulthy!
Excuse me, did he just imply that Williams were the first to bring semi-automatic gearboxes to F1? Ferrari did that a good two years before Williams did...
Yes, Ferrari had it already in 1989, but this is not semi-automatic, it´s fully automatic! He doesn´t care about the gear changing, he just pulls the throttle and break...
LOL, agreed. i think i'd kill myself after buying tickets to watch these cvt things race, had they ever did. same rpm all day... might as well watch some lawnmowers go at it.
Wow...you are certainly the most ill-informed race fan I've ever seen. Ban a transmission for its sound? You, sir, are utterly ridiculous.
The CVT is, as far as I'm concerned, the new age in automotive technology; as a still-developing technology, developers are still working through reliability issues, but CVT's provide better performance and efficiency by eliminating shift points.
Well technologies is not what I'm talking or complaining about I just wanted to remark the SOUND just that... I know that CVT it's great performance but it´s unfair as a sport, after all the F1 is an spectacle and these little things like the sound are very important too. But your opinion is very useful ! I'm not going to start a fight.... Thank you and have a nice day sir.
That's cool with me; I'm from a newer generation of car enthusiasts, so I know that the lack of sound variation caused by CVTs can be a very jarring experience for older-generation race fans; as they say, the beautiful sound of an engine accelerating is part of the thrill of motorsport.
Gotta agree with you there, powersliding, CVT on a rally car (think Lancia Delta S4, which is already badass to begin with) would be simply amazing. The good thing with rallies is that the car's motion is a greater part of the entertainment than the engine note (ahem...F1).
Why do you idiots open your mouth when you really have NO IDEA of the technology or what you are talking about? CVT is far more advanced than 'seamless shift'. However it takes all driver skill away from shifting which is why it has been banned.
And no pigeonkill, seamless shift is NOT a semi-automatic. It is still a manual box with straight cut gears with the clutch automatically controlled by a servo.
F1 has banned most of these "driver aids" simply because they take the element of skill away from the driver and place it in the car. On the other hand, these "radical" technologies (active suspension, antilock brakes, CVT) are brilliant ideas for production automobiles.
Nope. This is fully automatic and infinitely variable. I'd try explaining it, but YouTube doesn't let me type that much here. Look up "continuously variable transmission" on Wikipedia.
it all got confused. what i first meant was that seemless shift used in F1 is semi automatic, then I said that semi automatic means manual gear change and automatic clutch, i was not referring to CVT.
