lolz NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO... wait... didnt i just see that?
For sure they did, Source has the Havok-Physics-Engine. The cars in hl2 even have gears configured. You could use the source engine to teach physics in lower classes!
Gravity does not have a speed. It's the acceleration that's constant (at least in one place).
In fact, things do accelerate infinitely as they fall, but the increasing air friction prevents them from exceeding a certain speed depending on their shape.
In a perfect vacuum, you would actually accelerate to (close to) the speed of light, for example when falling into a black hole (in theory).
Though I really don't think the air friction in space (of which there is extremely little) would slow planetary bodies down to a reasonable level. While this is essentially the peanut gallery discussing physics, I'm still going to ask, wouldn't stellar winds and other such phenomena provide resistance to a planetary body as it orbits?
It's the same with objects, you continue gaining speed until you reach the terminal velocity. We (and chell) ARE objects. but with some diferences, lol =P
They do gain momentum. The game engine just has a maximum speed to prevent the game from freezing from every infinite portal loop. Long story short there's the point where air resistance=force of gravity and all changes in speed stop.
Yeah air drag balances gravity after a while. If you had a vacuum tube with portals at either end I guess something dropped through it would keep accelerating at 10g till... Ive no idea.
not really. it is because you can see the whole place in portal_1 that surrounds portal_2. in this case the core is in front of a portal you can see it in the other. so it is like there is 2. i had a map ( i think i still have it somewhere ) for portal and i did the same with the cubes. they felt thru the portal with accuracy that you actually wondered how it doesnt touch the floor! but then i opened a portal, waited a bit and then joined the fallfest. but the cube crushed me :D
Yeah, exactly. It would keep accelerating until, eventually, it'd reached terminal velocity. With no change in resistance it would not change speed from thereon.
look at that thing. no that other thing, no that one. no no THAT! one, what about this one (chell slaps it ) XD honestly they should of made a mute button on it XDDDD
yes but i hade that going for a good 15 minutes without it slodly moving near a side adn tehn falling out of the portal. that is where the practice comes in
@NatalieSama It actually is really hard to do with an innanimate object because you aren't the one going to the portal, so it takes a while to recalibrate if you angled it wrong.
no it hsouldn't actually, there's a force were gravity and the object have met the full force and it reaches the point were it can't keep getting faster, watched mythbusters :p
I think Darkinsigniosis is correct. Terminal velocity occurs when the force of friction due to atmosphere is equal and opposite to the force of gravity, but, as he said, if there were no atmosphere, then terminal velocity could never be reached. In reality, things cannot accelerate beyond light speed because they either lose their mass or their potential energy as they accelerate, but a pair of portals repeatedly raising a falling object at no energy cost would never run out of potential.
Normal falling objects in reality lose potential energy in exchange for kinetic energy as they approach the object of their attraction and have less distance over which they can fall, but a pair of portals like that equates to an infinitely deep hole with an approximately constant force of gravity, so not only would the object reach light speed, it would surpass it and continue to accelerate until something stopped it, assuming no atmospheric resistance.
Also, if you assume this is happening on a planet's surface, the planet on which this occurs would be slowly accelerated towards infinite velocity in the direction of the curiosity core, since gravity attracts both objects toward each other, but they can never nullify that attraction with the resistance that comes from a surface. The only way these impossible things would not happen is if there were some resistance build up or if the portal consumes energy that eventually runs out.
Not trying to be a smartass here, just helping: Aperture Science states that portals are rips in the fabric of space, so technically they shouldn't consume energy...that is, unless our universe is connected to that computer in the Matrix. :P
That is a good point. I only mention the possibility of energy being consumed since, otherwise, the buildup of gravitational potential energy that comes from being "portaled" upwards would violate the law of conservation of matter and energy. Thank you for your contribution.
lol my head hurts too. eff u and ur physics. so ur saying earth will just get faster ans faster or is the opposite gravitational pull from other planets + sun= controlled speed
That is an interesting point I had not considered. Now that I think about it, the force of gravity between Earth and the other object is changing directions with respect to the rest of the solar system as the Earth rotates about its axis, so maybe it would cancel out, but it still might introduce some "wobble" into the orbit, I'm thinking.
its probably thinking "wtf is going on" "oh there she is, there she is, there she is, OH there she is, no, there she is!" "where will this portal take me?" ect.
Then she'll probably be like "I'm getting tired. How do I get out, lady? Why are you standing there? Are you frozen? I want to get out. Or maybe I don't. This is so much fun!
"Is that a gun? Is something burning? Oooh, that has numbers on it! What's that? No, that. It's shiny. Oooh, what's over there? Where will this take me? Who are you? Oh, are you the lady from the experiment? Hiii, lady! Oh, that's shiny! Take me over there!"

Which is why shit doesn't randomly accelerate to the speed of light for no reason.
