From 2:28-2:32, when Dr. Marvin told Bob to call him Dr. Marvin in his home, does that mean that Bob can call him Leo in his office but Dr. Marvin in his home?
How many ppl here remember that look that Faye gives Leo at 0:57 that your mom gave you when you fucked up at the dinner table when company was over and you knew were getting an ass whooping that night when they left...lol
im in highschool, im a sophmore in a class of seniors, and when we were watching this part in class it was giggles, then soft laughter then cracking up at the mmmm scene
@rudhouse1 - Quit over-analyzing and eat your popcorn, okay? LOL
Seriously, I think the point's supposed to be that the family is rebelling from the way Dr. Marvin runs things--never getting out of the psychiatrist mindset when even as home (witness how Anna gets exasperated with him when he insists they have a father-daughter talk with hand puppets). Compared to Leo, Bob's like a breath of fresh air.
Anyway, even if it is a plot weakness, this is still a very funny movie on its own terms.
@calichick30 That was funny and confusing. The confusing thing was once Bob and Dr. Marvin first met in Dr. Marvin's office, Bob asked him if he should call him Dr. Marvin or Leo with Dr. Marvin saying to Bob "whichever you like." But here, he tells Bob to call him Dr. Marvin. (I guess in Dr. Marvin's office Bob can call him Leo but at home he should call him Dr. Marvin).
The kid has a point. If you ever just think about it... You're going to die, it's going to happen. That's is kind of scary to think about. That's a day I am not looking foward to that's for sure. I wish we could live like 300 years but, oh well.
The way Drefuss plays this character is amazing. He looks like a ticking time bomb about to go off at any second. That's true acting. Can't say enough about Bill's performance either. Brilliant!
In the dinner scene Ive always wondered how many takes it took to get it so they arn't laughing cause it probably would take me a billion gazillion without laughing.
am i imposing? well wtf do you think??? love this movie but bob was annoying. i defend leo on this movie..................patients and doctors never associate outside of the professional setting.................not to mention impose like bob does in this movie grrrrrrr!! lol
Thank you. However, it looked like he was talking very quietly and nobody was listening to him since his family and Bob were all singing very loudly that they probably didn't hear him. Then at 5:17, he started talking very loudly where everyone heard him and they stopped singing then.
From 4:08 to the end of the movie, I feel like saying to Dr. Marvin, "you should at least say thank you to Bob even though you were rude to him." Of course, if Bob wasn't there, and once "Good Morning America" arrived the next day, it would be sad and strange that the family said to the television crew "Leo Marvin is dead" and luckily, if Bob didn't track down Dr. Marvin on his vacation, and once Labor Day ended, Bob would have wondered where Dr. Marvin was.
@afriendofbean but the reason Dr. Marvin choked was because of Bob saying "Your book is gonna do a lot of good for a lot of people....I'm walking proof of that." and then he started choking. So if Bob wouldn't have been there, Leo wouldn't have choked.
I actually didn't know that. I thought Dr. Marvin choked because he took a mouthful of chicken at 2:06 and swallowed a chicken bone. I can also tell that he probably choked all because of Bob saying "Your book is gonna do a lot of good for a lot of people. I'm walking proof of that" because he looked up at 2:57 and then choked. (I guess the two reasons he choked was because, he hated Bob and was hoping Bob didn't embarrass him the next day, and he was also nervous to go on television).
Isn't give trying to dislodge food from someone's throat by jumping up and down on them as they lay on the couch like giving CPR to a heart attack victim on a bed?
At 4:33 or so did Bob or the Doc "fart" for real or as a gag, or was that just the creaking of the couch springs? lol I know that sounds like I'm paying too much attention to the details for gags, but I'm just curious.
@CWillis90 I've watched this movie as a kid dozens of times, and I've always thought I heard a fart there. I don't think it was an intentional gag, though.
That's a good point. He should be saying to Bob "in my office call me "Dr. Marvin" but at home you can call me "Leo." Also, when he first met Bob he told Bob that he can either call him "Leo" or "Dr. Marvin" whichever he liked when Bob said to him "should I call you "Leo" or "Dr. Marvin?"
I'll assume I'm in the minority here but it's actually the Doc I feel sorry for, + there's nothing more annoying at the table than someone constantly making that noise no matter how sick they are!
@rmephh There are some that actually felt bad for the character of the doctor in the movie (Dreyfus), even though Bob is portrayed as harmless and fun and the Doctor the bad guy who wants to ruin the fun
I love it when Bob lays him down on the couch and starts jumping on him. Leo...I mean Dr.Marvin is such an a-hole in this movie...some one just needs to punch Mr.Holland in his Opus....lol
@PervySage6931 Y'know I agree that he's an a-hole. The whole point of the movie is to show that a man with many phobic problems can be a very sensitive person and a very good psychologist. Dr.Marvin is an egotastical therapist who doesn't have first-hand experience with mental trauma and spent his whole life bs'ing his career.
