I fell in love with this ending from the first time i saw it.

In the release of the movie in my language the last line he says was translated as "Oh God! I overslept!" - this ridiculously moronic ending perfectly sums up the entire trilogy! The one at the mall is too "american-ish" and bad-ass for my taste.

The VHS version you have is probably either the Australian or the UK version, because those feature some extra scenes, that didnt make the final movie, but sometimes were mixedup as the real deal. If you check imdb you can find out for yourself!

however the test audience did not approve this so they went for the the theatrical ending, the one that takes place in the s-mart.

this ending became a director's cut, thus in some old vhs release is still present as the original ending.

This ending could actually be considered fake. During the shooting of the final scene's , the director (Sam Raimi) was suffering from an extremely high fever that clouded his decision making. About two years ago Raimi stated that this ending would definitely not have been made under normal surcomstances. Which is why you could call it a "fake" ending.

Although funny the S-mart ending never made much sense. It was forcefully tacked on by the studio who wanted to hide the fact this was Evil Dead 3. The original ending finishes the trilogy on a perfect note and ties it into 2. I love this ending. So cool!

That's because the Director's cut of the film was released theatrically in Europe but when Universal picked the film up for distribution in America, they made changes to the film. So that means that TV versions of the film outside of America would in fact be the director's cut.

I like this ending better. Its a perfect setting for a even more crazier sequel. It could have been more like a Mad Max movie but with demons. I'm suprise Raimi didnt go with this ending. Imagine Ash sent to a post apocalypse setting and the deadites follow him determined to kill him. That would have been awesome.

On paper, it sounds like it could have been more in the spirit of the predecessors. But the film overall doesn't have the same tone as the first two films. I like the surealness of this ending, but nothing really transpires here. The theatrical ending at least is very cool and in the same tone as the rest of the film. The whole film did the first two an injustice, nothing was really going to change that so I favour the S-Mart ending. This ending could have been perfect for the perfect ED3, tho.
