hmm...think about getting chained when you are giving birth! I understand the idea of safety...however, these animals should be left alone...atleast when they are giving birth! It should be SHY who helps her baby get up and walk...not the zoo keepers and vets!
Do you not think that the rumbling roar was maybe the elephant getting angry because you'd chained her up and not let her near her baby when she gave birth! That is the most disgusting thing I have ever seen, chaining her up when she was giving birth!
Elephants in zoos are routinely chained up for veterinary reasons. I would think giving birth qualifies. As for the roar, the mother was also flapping her ears which elephants do to express "excitement and joy". Did she look angry to you? She didn't to me.
The chains are for the safety of the calf and the keepers. The rumble/roar is a regular elepahnt sound. It's amazing to stand next to an elephant when it does that - you can feel it, it's so cool! Most of the elephants' communication is through very low frequency rumbles that you can't hear at all, but can sometimes feel.
Dear Hansa - you are missed so very much. You were joy on earth.

According to the zoo, they're going to try to get Chai (Hansa's mother) pregnant again this year.

Hansa wasn't breathing when she was first born. She would've died if the zoo personnel hadn't been there to help.
