I don't think it would be so bad for Obama to say, "This loophole whereby AIG was able to get these funds and yet give bonuses was an oversight on our part. We apologize for not preventing AIG from their outrageous behavior beforehand, but we will work to recoup that money on behalf of the taxpayers - this WILL be corrected." I'm a big supporter of Obama, but not having that response I think may be his first flub. I don't expect perfection from him though.

AIG is not 1 entity, there are individual departments that make up the company, some made profits, some didn't.

Government, being the enforcer of laws and therefore enforcer of legally binding contracts, really should not force anyone to break existing contracts.

That will only project an image of government not being a trustworthy partner, which means no government contracts and therefore the end of the recovery program.

Instead, as owner gov. should go for chapter 11 on vital assets and chapter 7 on everything else.

That would nullify any further contractual obligations for non-vital functions.
