Gladys has been proven to be fake. Her voice is acted out by a younger man, a comedian from Austin. There are plenty of comments on other Gladys video with information about him. I don't have time to check for them, but I've followed the searches and it's pretty much a done deal.
@sternim77 Yes, that's true. I have seen Scott Hardy perform, several years ago in the Austin area. It's common knowledge among the stand-up crowd that he is Glady's true voice. I've heard that they think the whole thing is pretty funny. He used to be part time manager of a comedy club a while back. I'm positive Ellen knows about it and keeps the joke going because it's pretty funny, plus her fans love Gladys. No harm done.
She's almost too good to be true, but I have no idea. I know alot of older ladies like her and they are absolutely hilarious! She does sound a whole lot like Roy D. Mercer, and I've heard rumors that it is a man doing an impression, so who knows? Funny and cute no matter what : )
It's hard to believe that she would be a real person. Just look at her website, they have a CD for sale and sell merchandise like t-shirts and stuff. Clearly they're making money off this little charade.

Gladys is definitely not a normal caller, her routine is too sharp to be real and she happens to sound a lot like Larry "The Cable Guy". Perhaps that is why she won't appear on the show. Still its funny as hell.
Doing a little more research on Gladys the consensus seems to be she is a character most likely done by the Austin,TX comedy duo of Joe Sears and Jaston Williams called "Greater Tuna."

Gladys is real. The rumors about her being an official commedian are false. Her grandkids have a website about her. And she is not senile for 88.
What she is is authentic and so f__kin' funny. I listen to this tape several times a week. It's a healing tonic. Laughter really IS the best medicine
