I heard this arrangement at age fifteen, and it changed my life. I knew that there was life beyond the classics, mindless 'pop' music and even love songs.
I remember hearing this at Rainbow Gardens in Erie, Pa and standing about 5 feet from the orchestra all night. I don't even think I knew my date was there. To be enveloped in that sound was just amazing.
Way, way, way back when there was only the opening theme, I loved it and then this, the closing theme, just wipes me out. Can't hear it enough and will never tire of it. All these years later, I still get misty eyed.
M1GARRAND1 says, "He tried so hard at innovating Jazz, but the jazz critics tore him down." The saying goes, "Critics are like eunuchs in a harem; they know how it's done, they've seen it done everyday, but they're unable to do it themselves." Fact is, when other great bands fell by the wayside, Kenton's survived until he died. More and more of his albums continue to be released on CD (I have OVER 100 Kenton CDs). So much for the critics. Thank you BAZMO2401 for your quality upload.
He tried so hard at innovating Jazz, but the jazz critics tore him down. George Simon, Nat Hentoff, and Ralph Gleason. Did they even read music????? Thank God for people like Mr. Kenton.
I saw The Kenton Orchestra in Hershey, PA, before they demolished the Starlight Ballroom. I think Ferguson was featured. A few years later, I was studying in the library at Wittenberg University in Springfield, OH. The Kenton Orchestra was performing on the floor above the theology reading room- in the University chapel- when they exploded into "Artistry in Rhythm" directly above me. It was truly a religious experience!
The first of the Artistries and you should have heard it on Balboa Is. CA. in 1948. A Kenton fan from the beginning and all thru his many variations. From
@golf101plus I was at the Balboa Bay Ballroom in '48 or '49 Maynard had just joined the band -- in fact I was there when they recorded Orange Colored Sky with Nat King Cole -- hitchiked there from Mpls -- slept and cleaned up in the bus station
@edgarbm95 I was in High school and had just had an accident that cut a tendon in my finger. I was considering quitting when I met the bass player here in a band clinc the Kenton orchestra gave at the University of SC. John Worster encouraged me to stick with it and taught me how to make my fingers stronger. I will never forget him.
@AmosPressley I was also at the USC Clinic. I presume you mean South Carolina, not that imitation USC in California! I still remember all the trombone players by name. According to a post on another video only two of them are still alive. It's unforgettable the first time you hear a world class band like this.
Went to Jazz Arts Group in Columbus, OH during the 80's. Always had a Stan Kenton night - the best - different guests. Clark Terry was one - even June Christie - and she was OLD! I heard this first in late 40's-early 50's. Saw him live at Nebraska U in '52-53. All just stood & watched-no dancing! I am old also - but still love good music - Adam Lambert now my fav vocalist! He will do for vocals now what Kenton did for jazz back then! Love these tracks!
I HAVE LIVE AT THE TROPICANA!!!!!! OMG!!! BEST SHTUFF EVER!!!! I might give up listening to Perez Prado for a week, move over Buddy Rich, here comes Stan Kenton, Pat Matheny eat your heart out.
Amen to what you say about Stan-what a band and arent we fortunate there are so many cds of his amazing music for us to listen to and learn about him and his music.
John Worster on bass....read the credits at the end.
I saw Kenton at a danceland in 1954 and nobody would dance......we just stood there gathered around the stage in awe. He kept saying....dance, dance, but no we were mesmerized. I adored him. Still do.
I saw Stan at the Univ. of Alabama in April 1955. The band played in concert first, took their break and then played for dancing and we did, indeed dance.
Very nice, litvak36! My grandmother was telling me a story on how she and my departed grandfather met him here in Salt Lake deceads ago. (She mentioned "Artistry in Rhythm", so I had to see if I could find it on here!)
The 2 albums live in london and live in europe were a revelation to an 18 year old! where can I get the CDs - Ye Gods this stuff is incredible - I can't help myself.....
On Aug 20th 1978 Stan Kentons Orchestra gave there last concert at Stern Grove San Francisco. 30 years later His band sounds as fresh to day as it was then do try to listen to recodinbg of that final concert on c.d. and of the last strains from the bandstand of"Artistery In Rythem."
What a band, these guys were top flight. I challenge any one to show me a better sounding band. any time anywhere. Very powerful and straight up gangsta! not to mention the charts are the best ever!!!!
One of my absolute favorite big bands, bar none! Saw them several times when they came through the Baltimore area in the 70's , especially at the Left bank Jazz Society. Killer tempo, especially for the 2nd trombone riff. Awesome to say the least. Thanks for posting these.
shown once on the BBC,recording wipped of tape soon after , ihave a VHS recording of this concert like many in the uk. yes its great. someone in the beeb was good to copy this thanks to them we can enjoy this today.
This album has to rank at or near the top of alltime performances. It's marquee material and the arrangements and musicianship have perfectly held throughout the decades since. I cannot understand why it hasn't been issued on DVD. I would buy several for friends and family. It best illustrates how perfect Kenton's band was in the early 70's. Anyone, please let me know if this becomes available.
Wow, how nice that you have this for us who have the CD to finally see the group in action.
I just enjoyed that so much! I watched all 9 parts...Kenton was THE best! Even later in his years. The band is in top form, as it always was! I'm a jazz trombonist, and I can echo what others have said: he had the best bone section all the time!
Thanks so much for posting these, truly great art!
I was at this recording in 1972 at the front of the circle, a position that was perfect for listening, equidistant from each of the sections. I have heard hundreds of big bands live, but the sound of this one in the Shepherds Bush TV theatre was the very best. Superb balance and spine-tinglingly loud. The Kenton band played a full length concert and these were the selections broadcast. One of the best musical evenings I ever had.
I heard this arrangement at age fifteen, and it changed my life. I knew that there was life beyond the classics, mindless 'pop' music and even love songs.
