The US must fight to insure that the US dollar is maintained as the international currency. We most end private bank printing/coining of money and replace it with state printing/coining of their own debt-free currency. The amount of money should be limited to the productive and innovative capacity of the nation. All nations have this right. We do not need to have precious metal backing but we must limit the currency to be provided for private and governmental real economic activities.

If gold *was* tied to currency (along with other REAL AND TANGIBLE commodities) then that would be great. Doubt anything will change, though. @FoodOrFail I think you don't yet have complete clarity about what the gold advocates are saying. To your (2nd) point, gold IS currency. The appropriate question to ask is what is currency. Currency, is in fact a commodity that serves a community as a medium of exchange. Usually it's been gold, but sometimes it's been silver. For this to be so, the commodity must already be present in abundance in that region. There are other properties but I can't elaborate here.

All I'm saying is it is not feasible for the average Joe to pay for his morning coffee with gold. Gold cannot be the only species of money for actual physical transactions. Those who have been hoarding gold in their families for centuries would automatically have an unfair advantage over those who have none.

@FoodOrFail The fact remains that for various reasons, Gold has always triumphed as de-facto currency, but alternative commodities are acceptable.
Even if your "hoarding" hypothesis were true, the advantage would diminish quickly: money isnt wealth until it's spent. So, for your coffee drinker, there will have to be a transitional phase between de jure fiat and gld/slv/etc: as the gold is spent by the hoarder, prices of goods will be referenced to the quantity of gold circulating.
