This is so cool. I love when you test these (harmless) things that smaller cats love with the big cats! Although, myself, going out there in the dark with all those glowing eyes would just scare the heeby-jeebies out of me. (Yes I did just say heeby-jeebies)
Yes the curiousity make them chase the light dot. Laser pointer really a good stuffs to interact with you pet. And that also will help them to pratice more and enhance their healthiness! lol, I'm going to gather that tigers and lions don't get much out of chasing flies either. I can imagine that it was pretty boring for them and they were more wondering how to get at that monkey with the camera instead. XD
@1984wrx my jack russell chases a laser and absolutely goes nuts over it. But my other dogs don't really pay attention to it. I guess it just depends on behavior.
@BigCatRescue im not sure but im getting the feeling that they got maybe a little mad at the red dot following them , its like they thought u were a sniper....
@BigCatRescue my dog also hunts the pointer like a wild beast and she knows that i control it because every time i take it in my hand she starts to look for the dot on the floor. :)
@1984wrx This may not be exactly what you were thinking, but my dog goes nuts over the laser pointer. If we want the cats to play with it, we have to put the dog outside or in a separate room!
@1984wrx there are several videos of ducks who try eating a laserpointer's light dot, so i guess any animal to which small things with fast paced movement fall prey to will probably chase it. your idea with monkeys is actually extremely interesting, and of course apes, too! the somewhat big brains of an orang or gorilla might understand it after some trial and error.
@1984wrx i can't say for sure, but i think monkeys wouldn't pay too much attention to it, they're too inteligetn, they might try to catch it at first, but after a few seconds, they'd stop. of course, that's just my speculation, i can't say for surem since i have no evidence, but i'd definetly loke to see it xD
@croburke Lions, tigers, leopards and jaguars are "greater cats" all other species are classed as "lesser cats", the term "big cat" is just a general on used for all wild species of cats :)
@BigCatRescue Sorry, I meant big five cats. I have read in several places that it's tiger, lion, jaguar, leopard, cheetah. Being that I'm not in a line of work dealing with big cats, I don't know if there's discrepancy on this, or if something's changed, etc.
@apharot I'm not sure if there is a "big 5" when it comes to big cats? You could be referring to the greater cats, which are the lion, tiger, jaguar and leopards?
I noticed the "smaller" of the wild cats seemed more interested than the larger, like the lions and tigers. It would have been awesome to see the lion or tiger playing like the smaller cats did.
@SkyPodish We've had that suggestion before and may experiment in the future :) We used to have several domestic cats that lived on the property and on the tour path and neither big cats or domestic cats were bothered with each other, they now live inside because they're old :)
I figured the smaller of the big cats (like the bob cats and servals would go after it. Wasn't surprise when the big big cats didn't care. Cute clip though :)
As adorable as this vid is, 0:20 is a little creepy. Seeing a set of big cat eyes staring at me in the dark would make me piss myself. Even if the tiger/lion/cougar/leopard just wants to "play" I'm glad that cage is there, haha.
@tweaker1bms Cat's don't think logically. They hunt in instinct; when something moves in a way that triggers that instinct, they HAVE TO attack! They can't not attack. In fact sometimes you'll play with a cat that does not want to play, but can't help it! Like, "I want to leave, but I have to keep batting at this thing!"
@Ninjalectual Hmmm, somewhat skeptical, but only in matters of precise accuracy of that statement. Never really seen it myself. Like with string seen a few cats simply not be into it, particularly the older ones though if that means anything. Perhaps I'm just akin to attributing to them some free will :P
@tweaker1bms There is actually a study (you can probably find it if you search, it was in a college textbook of mine) that found that cats will "hunt" something like a mouse that moves in front of them, even if they are currently eating a meal! They will stop eating to hunt! That is a pretty strong indicator that the are not making a conscious choice, that they do not hunt because they are hungry, they hunt purely on instinct because they can't help it!
@Ninjalectual I dunno if that could be the only conclusion possible though...one way to help think of other options is ask why we humans might do the same thing. Some other possibilities I could think of could be just cause it so damn fun for them (they do seem to get a greater kick out of it than we do...), or the ingrained survivalist thinking of get as much as you can now cause there may not be anything for a long time (forgetting us humans are there to refill the bowl). but eh, is cute :)
Actually one of the keys for animal enrichment when in captivity is to give them the opportunities to chase, play, and interact with several different objects. Since waving a laser pointer around gives the cats an opportunity to run, play, and chase this could be described as a rather effective tools in keeping their minds sharp and bodies fit.

Nice vid. Would have liked it more if you put your life on the line and went after them big cats in the wild. Note to self: When visiting africa, bring lazer pointer. You could have saved my life with this vid, mate. Thanks.
@kassel188 Okay.. have you ever owned a cat? I've owned several my whole life and I can tell you from experience that the majority of the time kitties love laser pointers. Actually, cats love anything that moves. You can tell this by the look in their eyes. Their pupils get larger and they get into the mood of chasing. It's very engaging for them. I can assure you there's nothing wrong with playing with a laser pointer. -_-
@kassel188 I don't know about their big cats, but some years ago I had 3 housecats and a laser pointer keychain. Guess what sound got them all to come running? Not the sound of a treat package being shaken, not the sound of a cat food can being opened, but the jingling of the laser pointer would send all 3 running to me at a mad gallop. If they didn't like it, I don't think they'd come at a dead run like that, so much so that the girls (both longhaired) spun out cornering.
@kassel188 You have it wrong, they say not to point lasers at your eyes. It wont hurt you otherwise. Therefore it's perfectly safe to play with they kitties as they were not pointing the lasers in their eyes. >_>
@CinnAlla This has been asked a few times :) The track is called "Night Fall" we purchased it from a royalty free site: music2hues*com Hope this helps!
@danietkissenle As the saying goes "a cat is a cat is a cat" they are all basically the same and act similarly. But obviously these are wild species of cats and they still have those wild instincts, this makes them extremely unpredictable and dangerous and we can never forget this no matter how cute and cuddly they may appear at times....

That last tiger was like "That's a very nice laser pointer you have there. A shame if some thing happened to you."

Love the picture of the tiny eyes with the arrow saying "Canyon"! Was he up at the top of his tree or down on the ground?
