  • Quadrophenia put my difficult teen years into perspective, By Numbers made me accept turning 40, and Endless Wire makes getting old acceptable. It's as if my life has travelled along with Pete's writing though the years. Thank you Mr. Townshend.

  • A real voice, a real song, a real treat!!! thats why great groups last for so very long!! Long Live The Who...!!!

  • I grew old with them... And we ain't dead... Long Live The Bloody Who!!!

  • @beezee409 Reading your comment while listening to this song made me cry.

  • I wish there was a LOVE button.

  • Do you know what.. the scary thing is that since this performance (incredible as it is) Roger has got his voice back to A1 condition on the back of the Tommy Reborn tour so... Townshend you lazy bastard - lets have a NEW FUCKING ALBUM with Pino, Rabbit and of course Zak.... The Noo 'Oo (never forgettng of course Keith and John)

  • Great performance - really love thus song but has so much meaning when these guys play it.

  • i watched this and cried..so beautiful and shows you what page and plant could have done

  • you write songs like this when you've shone in your youth....I was in the crowd when they did.........these two have lived the lives of ten men......and looks like they have a couple left yet.

  • The first time I heared this song, I cried. Really, it seriously touched me :)

  • Roger's voice has faded some, but he still sings with a lot of passion.

  • much better than the studio recording

  • Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey definately still have it. Geniuses, both of them!

  • just a thing of absolute beauty..........

  • Pete is still at the top of his game. What a great song. This is a classic peace of music which evokes many emotions. The Who are still untouchable when it comes to turning on a live performance. Long live The Who.

  • Beautiful song wish it was longer!

  • Epic.

  • Roger in never losing his voice! He sings like he did back in the 70's!

  • thanks for the upload.

  • I pity emotional retards like Olesnse in the comments here. I pity anyone who can't get some kind of enjoyment out of this song.

  • Even in their advancing years they can produce amazing stuff like this.

As a lifelong Who fan sadly we will never see the likes of bands of this quality again

  • This was the final song they played when I saw them a while back, bloody amazing.

  • Never been a big Who fan but i must say this is amazing

  • Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, Motorhead, Living Colour, Rainbow, Heart, Chuck Berry, Soundgarden, Tom Petty, .....

    All great.

    But these guys.....

  • I'm going to go out on a limb here.

I think The Who may be The Greatest Band Ever. Go watch Baba O, live, and then come back to this.

I like the Beatles, U2, Jethro Tull, Aerosmith, Pearl Jam, Deep Purple, Journey, Metallica, etc, etc, etc. But seriously...

I think from front to back, The Who is the best. Yeah there are better guitarists, yeah there may be better singers (?), and tighter bands. But these songs, with this kind of power.

    The Who is #1.

  • truly great

  • They still kick ass and real men DO discuss their feelings...Obviously you're not familiar with their entire catalog of music, otherwise you'd know this.

  • @CountessEntwistle Begging your pardon. The Who is my favorite band. The Who died when John Entwistle did. That video ain't the Who, but thanks anyway.

  • @olesne You have clearly never listened to their entire catalog, or an entire Who album for that matter. Pete Townshend is one of the most introspective songwriters in rock history.

  • Wow, Roger's still got it. Great performance.

  • when ever i see/hear this song

i think about john and keith

RIP you crazy bastards, the world of good music is gone forever know you are

  • :) i dont need to say any more

  • is this song talking about moon and entwistle?

  • @cricetulus had to be about keith. i saw the "who" in concert in 2002 about a week after john died. notice one clip of this song was done in 1978....the year keith died

  • Stands up alongside any Who song. I listened to this song over and over again. Amazing. I would love to see them go on acoustic tour if Pete's ears are done.

  • Damn good lyrics, Pete! (you can see a bit of a tear in their eyes, and it brings a tear to mine as well.)

  • saw rog at the nokia...no bs with him

  • Every time i haer this song it moves me in a way no other song can ever hope to. I just can't explain in words how much this song means to me and how much I love it

  • Saw Roger last Thursday on his "Use It or Lose It" solo tour. He's 65 and still puts on one helluva show with so much energy.

  • I would have loved to have gone to see him... wrong side of the pond.

  • I think this is my favorite all time Who song. Such emotion....such a sweet sentiment.

  • I just love this song, everytime i hear it, it brings a tear my eye. Reminds me of years past all the good times, bad times all the trials and tribulations. But still here living one day at a time. My how time flies by.

  • even live, it made me cry...

  • Saw them live in Auckland it was amazing. Roger's voice is still so powerful after all these years. brilliant!

  • Second to none. Yes I`ve heard the Stones Purple all of them. The Who were the the very best of the best.

  • That blew me away... His guitar work is beautiful it complements rogers voice so well!

  • I love this song, and I wish Roger Waters and David Gilmour from Pink Floyd would give a GOOD listen to these lyrics. The Who...love you guys

  • Why??

  • I guess the lyrics "A great train derailed" and 1 of us gone, and 1 of us mad" makes me think of PF. and how their "great train derailed" and 2 of them are gone now. It's an emotion filled song .

  • Makes a lot of sense.

I thought you were trying to knock Pink Floyd's lyrics somehow.

  • No, I love the lyrics of Pink Floyd as well as The Who. But The Who has their 2 remaining members still together and The Floyd are just done :( very sad to me anyway.

  • No offense, but the line is "a great dream derailed" (not "train"). Same meaning, but more metaphoric (intentionally or not).

  • That's right, my mistake. I thought he said train. Thanks, but anyway, these lyrics are very melancholic. Great performance by them !

  • No prob.

I agree the lyrics are somewhat melancholy. But I also see a duality in that they exude a sense of pride over their long, noteworthy career. Sort of "it's been an amazing ride, and if not for some misfortune and bad judgement, think of how much more amazing it could have been. But an amazing ride nonetheless." That's how I perceive it, anyway.

Anyway, like you say, a great performance.

  • What a fucking tune.......

God bless you boys. RIP Keith & John.

  • this is why i listen to music you always have a majic moment caught in time like this

  • What comes to mind? One word....POWERFUL

  • you can practically feel Keith and John on the stage with them...

    RIP

  • Man, so true! The world will end and still they will endure.

  • WOW!

  • Tears..

  • Goosebumps........nuff said

  • Outstanding job lads.

  • First saw/heard this song a couple weeks ago on that VH1 Rock Honors special. Had goosebumps the whole time. There aren't many pairs of humans who can stand on a stage alone, with just an acoustic guitar, and project this much power and sincere emotion with such chemistry (at any age).

    Terrific song and performance.

  • amen to that.

You can practically hear the years they've had in this song. What strikes me the most is this beautiful relationship between the two of them. It's amazing to watch these two individuals on stage alone.

  • I started tearing of how amazing and powerful this song is when I saw it on the VH1 thing a couple weeks ago.

  • @Ken5244 You're right. They are amazing musicians, poets and players. I you close your eyes the performance can be feel as a part of a theatre play. Real genious both.

  • Such a great song by the two remaining members.

  • is this from endless wire?

  • yes

  • yes

  • I can still feel the hug from Boston 4 days ago! Such warm, happy memories!

  • this song always gives me goosebumps. its amazing.

  • One of my favourite songs on Wire and glass!

    Roger's voice is really great!

  • wooooooooooooooow.. roger just breaks my heart.. such beautiful man o.o

  • I hear ya!

  • Hey snugglysara! It's McVicar from the who forums! I am SO jealous of your hug from Rog!! Lucky you!

  • incredible vocals and guitar.

  • Goosebumps all over...

  • Townshend is a beast.... frickin' awesome.

  • this song makes me want tea lol

  • wow. this is one of the best performances of this song. excellent.

  • I like the statement about its Pete, a lifetime of emotion behind his playing. I can play it, but not the same as heaing it from Pete by far. As in any great guitarist, they created it, not the copier. I wrote too many songs t aount, some good, some bad, but not many as good as Townshend by far. he is an icon by every right. even thr fact his wrist cah loosen up that much being around 60 amazes me. I am arthritic at 40, 60 i will be toast. He and David Gilmour are my Heroes.

  • i learnd the song by searching it on google. great song. never gets old

  • everyone i know what the tuning is.

    D G D G B C

  • awesome song ill givr the who all my props they make me get goose bumps

  • The Who is my favorite band. I really got into them about 30 years ago. I'm 40 now. I have seen them numerous times thoughout the years. It's still great to see them playing !!!

  • what is he tuned to ? its sounds like the botom three are standard but the top ones he hits open and its confusing any hints or help would be great!!! LOVE the song

  • This is Pete Townsend!!.. He could have his own tuning for the top strings. Maybe someone knows, but I just look at him play, and soak it in. I could never play as he does. There is a lifetime behind that guitar. That is what I could never replicate.

  • probably open g. (see the tabs section at thewho(dot)net.)

  • this is a really good song!!!

  • I just watched them perform this song for their Vh1 honors. Amazing. Just knowing both these figure's pasts and conflicts. I'm so glad I saw them in concert last year. The night before my finals! HAHAHAHA, fuck finals, it was the WHOOOO

  • Really, really good!

  • A moving song on reflection of the bands time together, written not long after enwhistles death.

  • A fantastic performance of a beautiful song. 40-odd years and they've still got it, credit where its due. Form is temporary, class permanent and all that...

  • This is single performance that Daltrey is one of the greatest singers still living...

  • You better you bet!

  • This is one of my favorite songs from Endless Wire. Fantastic performance on Later with Jools Holland. Thanks for posting.
