GNU till I die!!! free software will triumph but not for a while, there are only a small handful of GNU/Linux distros that use ALL free software, the ones that DO are listed on the GNU website, I hate proprietary software and I love emacs
Really the first working GNU used the Linux kernel. In fact, Linus wrote that because the HURD kernel for GNU was not finished. But I agree it was instrumental in it's creation and should have been included, especially UNIX. Of course Windows has always been instrumental in recruiting people over to Linux. The day I overcame Windows after 10 years of using it from 98-ME-XP-Vista was the first day I used Vista. I always thought I hated computers until I tried Ubuntu 7.10 later that week.
i thought this ad was from the 90's and stuff. but then i saw vista sooo
and i quick question?
was this air on tv and how does linux pay for advertising since it a free-based os and so i think their low on budget and who update it and stuffs since its free and no one does a job for free without a pay?
Think of it this way: Linux is free and open source (you can modify any way you want and contribute to it) to anybody that wants to toy around with it so it's development is limited to pretty much everyone in the world that wants to improve it. Windows on the other hand is closed and limited to how many people Microsoft can hire.
Well, in the spirit of Open Source, improve it! Really, no hard feelings... I'd love to see a lot more people creating Linux and Open Source commercials.
Despite some very enthusiastic opinions, Linux isn't going to leapfrog Windows anytime soon. Everything works on a Windows computer that's managed by a careful, responsible user. Despite some errant claims, Windows doesn't crash regularly; it's not 1995. Windows, Mac, and Linux are all great accomplishments by modern programmers considering the ammount of power drawn from each.
Linix is in many ways superior to Windows, yet its strengths will be in the shadow of the stable, compatible MS OS.
I do believe UBUNTU is the future. Most people dont relize they have been around a very long time. Windows just made people lazy so they dont have to think. Linux, you have to. Other then being hacked, people do it because it is there, MS made alot of people mad over the years and they got even one way or another. Besides, linux runs most of the big servers on the internet mot other OS's.
Yeah I tried out ubuntu yesterday I had never installed a OS before and consider myself an average computer user but I was easily able to get it all up and running quickly it's pretty awesome!
Proud linux user here, i'm wanting change to debian because kubuntu has bugs related with sound and qjackctl... in gnu-linux there isn't lot of games, in special rpg games... but don't worry because soon there will appear one based on Rpg maker and perhaps later an advanced rpg maker allowing lot of things like online mode or offline mode
Yeah pulseaudio has kinda ruined the last Ubuntu releases. I un-installed it and started using ALSA for everything. I can't imagine why they thought it was a good idea.
hi: i'm sorry, but i think than linux is not an "evolution" of windows. this is not on this line, of course. this is an evolution of unix family and free (libre) software work. greetings from san juan, argentina :-)
The minix kernel wasn't 'taken', Torvalds coded his own kernel keeping minix-like functionality in mind...
Linux Not being Unix was the whole point at the time of it's creation due to licensing reasons... while being the same as any Unix distribution, Torvalds did not use any Unix code for the Kernel and Richard Stallman the founder of FSF did not use any Unix code either in GNU...
Well an OS technically is a platform for running other programs, the Atari doesn't have one. There's firmware, but with older consoles like that, it's not technically an OS, since nothing is running in the background providing system services to other programs.
Not only those, but also Solaris and FreeBSD. As I recall, all computers came from the Altair which had no keyboard, OS, neither a monitor. After that, the first personal computer was made by Wozniak alone, not with Steve Jobs. And the operating system.... I can't tell if Atari 2600 beat Woz in that one, but maybe it did.
you might want to try again. the original linux has nothing to do with hackers. it was created originally as an alternitive to unix BY A COLLEGE STUDENT! Now it is the fastest evolving os out there vastly supeior to windows and on par if not better than mac osx
Linus didnt design linux as an alternative. He designed because he bought a brand 386 and wanted to try it out but the OS that he was on at the time, Minix wasnt able to take advantage of new hardware. So he made Linux as an exercise in learning about the 386s features (this decision sparked the Linux vs Minix debate.)
Superfreaxx, I think DizzyGuru was talking about Richard Stallman. A lot of people confuse the 2, because they don't know the difference between the kernel and gnu software.
its obvios that lunux can withstand a hcker BUT lunux is the most cominly used softwere for hacking that explains why it dont get hacke or it would get beat at its own game.
i was actually thinking they should put just a few less MS and add 2 MACs before the linux... not because i am a fanboy or anything but it makes more sense
Is Linux the future? What happened to MS/ADOBE/AUTODESK & Gaming? Linux is a good operating system but not totally the future, and that;s because even with wine not all the programs will be able to run on linux, plus most people are noobs and will continue using windows. I dual boot Vista and Ubuntu.
Well, the choice is personal. I have no need for MS software anymore. The only Adobe software I use is Flashplayer. GIMP, Inkscape & Scribus take care of image editing and DTP. Open source games also exist and there are also Windows games you can run under WINE in Linux.
And then there is Qcad and BRL-CAD. It's important to not expect software to be an exact copy of eachother. Anyway, if you want to switch, you can. But since Linux is about freedom, you certainly don't have to. :)
Linux can be the future if companies support it. For the time being, WINE is needed because companies do not consider the Linux software market a significant one. But hopefully, this will change.
And as far as noobs are concerned, Linux is more secure than Windows by design. Consider how easy it is to get infected with trojans and spyware on Windows and how Linux protects you because your password is required before doing anything important, just like user account control in Vista.
Not very likely. Linux is not (like for instance, MacOS) only save because not many people use it. The basic setup of Linux (no user is root) makes it impossible for a virus to do any harm without the user's permission.
Linux was the only unhacked system on a three day hacking contest. MacOS went down within two minutes and Vista took another day. You would say, that if you have all the source code, it should be easier, right? ;)
Sure it didn't go down, but the reason for that is you have to have to gain root to bring it down. There are plenty of ways to get root access to the machine because of vulnerabilities like buffer overflows, etc. in programs that have setuid on. If the virus coder finds a vulnerability in a *nix system that gives them root access, it doesn't matter who got infected. Just as well, if you have sudo access, they can sudo su (if you are allowed) and have a root shell.
However, Linux was the only system that stood it's ground on a three day hacker contest. While Mac OS got hacked within two minutes and Windows within another day, the Linux system remained unhacked throughout the challenge.
When? It already is. It powers the majority of the internet and has done for years. Very few viruses have ever been able to get close to crippling a Linux machine. For the market share argument consider Apache (Linux) vs IIS (Windos) and the Sasser and Codered viruses respectively. Sasser infected around 6,000 Apache servers, Codered infected more than 12,000 IIS servers. Apache was VASTLY more popular than IIS at the time with a marker share similar to what Windows is on the desktop.
actually i have nbeen using sabayon , and it can run most windows programs and even games now , it uses wine slider , i have been able to play games as well , and even adobe software works well within linux ,
Yeah well, you can run a copy of every kind of taste of Windows or other operating systems within Linux using VirtualBox or VirtualBox OSE. Just google it.
as a computer technician I can say one thing that majority of windows users won't switch to linux just because it would be too hard for them to work with it. I've seen many trashed windows boxes, because most users are very dumb and can't distinguish their but from their elbow, let alone using command line. I'm using Kubuntu for more than a year now and don't even thinking about downgrading to windows. I was linux fan from red hat 6.X and I can say it improved a lot.
Linux can be just as easy or just as hard to use as Windows. The problem lies in hardware support, which is still lacking, but improving. Same goes for software. Some people may not be satisfied e.g. with GIMP or similar apps and explicitly need PhotoShop e.g. for professional use.
as a recently migrated poweruser from vista/mac to ubuntu linux, i would really say, tht linux is ultra powerful, free, amazing support and exactly how an "OS" should be. If linux can be marketed and channelized like windows/mac, it can take over the world in a fortnight.
Well, I think smart behaviour is always recommended when you're using a computer. Even more when you use Windows. At least, if you don't want te be infected with spyware, adware and virusses (not an issue with Linux).
A Linux distribution like Ubuntu of Linux Mint is actually a lot easier than Windows. But, like with anything different, you have to take a minute or two to get to know it. If you would have used Linux and switched to Windows, you would have had the same 'problem'.
I posted a negative comment on the "Warning" video, but this one is gold. Now this is what you stress when making a Linux Commercial. You point out that Linux has improved over a long time being built off battle harden Unix.
With Vista being as bloated as it is (and apparently being the coming new standard), anyone wanting their old hardware had better be jumping the Windoze boat. I did 3 months ago, I'm accustomed to Ubuntu now, and boy am I happy I did it. I can keep my computer forever probably.
a little history for you, Linux was around before windows but what slowed down Linux was there was no default for it, no singularity. windows eventually broke off of Unix and was rewritten so heavily it became crap and broken windows, but because Linux remained the underdog it grew better, faster and stronger through the help of everyone, a community, when microshaft windork became isolated and virus infested
linux forever, hey windowze guys, give it a try :P, it cost nothing (except of a burned CD/DVD), no viruses, no worms, no trojans...no "blue screen of death"...no pain...everyting is free and safe...be smart use linux :D
Windows is the 'norm' to the majority of people. There are many out there not aware of alternatives. I am a computer tech type of guy. A high level programmer. I went on to Linux (fully) and never looked back. I even recommend Linux to low-level computer buffs also. Linux, as much as many will disagree is much simpler compared to Vista. It is better presented, not anti-virus software to worry about, and security is much tougher. To top it, as kodred1337 mentioned... it's free. Give it a try.
This is a software commercial. Apple distributes hardware plus software solution. Their software is not meant to be used with anything else but their hardware. Being able to survive in many different environments is a big plus in evolution of a species. I think MacOS (the software) is crippled in that perspective. Linux runs on PC's and Mac's.
Effective evolution requires large numbers, it doesn't work in small groups. If linux wants to evolve it needs to start getting more users (and yes, numbers of linux users are climbing all the time, but not fast enough to make it the next Windows ...)
yeah, and evolution ends up in complexity crisis... so will windows. if windows vienna/7 goes all the way back XP and Vista did, then the only articles about windows will appear in satirical magazines.

Windows is the past; Linux is the future. I am glad the past is behind and the future is ahead. :-)

This is a software commercial. Apple distributes hardware plus software solution. Their software is not meant to be used with anything else but their hardware. Being able to survive in many different environments is a big plus in evolution of a species. I think MacOS (the software) is crippled in that perspective. Linux runs on PC's and Mac's.

so linux evolved from windows?
MoeBT 4 years ago
No. We evolve our computers ourselves by switching to Linux. :)
vin7777 4 years ago 4
To stretch out this analogy a little more.
Effective evolution requires large numbers, it doesn't work in small groups. If linux wants to evolve it needs to start getting more users (and yes, numbers of linux users are climbing all the time, but not fast enough to make it the next Windows ...)
Mex219 4 years ago
Yes, it should go faster (and probably will), but it's getting there anyway. Evolution is also not about a short time span (although it can be).
vin7777 4 years ago 4
yeah, and evolution ends up in complexity crisis... so will windows. if windows vienna/7 goes all the way back XP and Vista did, then the only articles about windows will appear in satirical magazines.
