In my opionion i think eddie bravo should of competed more often and not created the whole 10th planet system he is a jean jeaque machado black belt and should atleast teach some classes i the gi im not saying i deslike eddie bravo though Marcelo would put it over any 10th planet fighter including eddie
Question for anyone - Exactly how good is Eddie Bravo in jiu jitsu? The only thing I ever hear about is how he beat Royler Gracie - once. Has he consistently placed in elite grappling competitions? Is he considered a world-class grappler? I really didn't follow Eddie's grappling career, and I'm too lazy to research it, so I am hoping that someone would just inform me.
@mrkitanai1 Eddie's Jiu-Jitsu is very good. He's a black belt under Jean Jacques Machado. He won the N.A. Abu Dhabi Trials in 2003 and of course went on to beat Royler. He competed through out his Jiu-Jitsu career, but not the higher level ones. He retired after the Royler match to open up a school. No, Eddie does not have a lot of experience in high level competition. He's just a smart guy who saw Jiu-Jitsu differently than everyone else at the time and put together his own system.
I think Eddie is exaggerating a bit when he says that Marcelo Garcia will finish someone, 95% of the time, when he has their back. When Garcia fought MMA, he took his opponent's (Dae Won Kim) back with more than 1-min left in round 1. He sunk in his heel hooks, and, for one full minute, he tried really hard to sink in a RNC on Kim, but Kim escaped with a few seconds left in the round. In rd 2, Garcia was stopped by TKO.
@mrkitanai1Eddie was referring to Marcelo's finish percentage when he has the back specifically in No Gi grappling competition. He wasn't referring to MMA. Marcelo wasn't use to training with MMA gloves and found out it is harder to apply chokes with the gloves on. the 95% is not even an exaggeration when Marcelo ha the back (without gloves) .
@MattFinstein Makes sense - thank you for sharing that bit of insight. I was really amazed, though, with Kim. I was actually incorrect - Garcia had Kim's back with 3-min left in the round! Gloves or no gloves, I find it amazing that Kim was able to avoid being choked out when Garcia had his back for such a long period of time.
@mrkitanai1 Eddie told the story about that once. Kim apparently trained at one of Eddie's sister schools and Kim's manager called Eddie for advice on how to prepare for Marcello. Eddie (rightfully) said train nothing but rear naked choke defense the entire training camp. Lo and behold, that saved Kim's ass.
@mrkitanai1 He didn't train with gloves on. Bravo meant no-gi. And I'd venture to say it's closer to 100 percent. I can't think of a single instance outside of Renzo in 2003 where Marcelo had the back and did not finish.
That is true, but simply, you HAVE to drill specific positions to be successful at executing them or defending being in them. Roger gets away with a lot because he is SO long and big. 6 5 and 220 makes a big difference. Guys his size are not pulling xguard or inverted delariva and delariva Mendes/Cobrinha style games. The bigger guys game isn't as evolved as the lighter guy's game with the exception of the deep half, but that is about it Rickon's weight class is just too evolved.
I have trained with Eddie before. He is among the most humble and down to earth guys out there. No ego whatsoever! He has nothing but great things to say about other Jiu Jitsu players. He also took time out of his day to work with us after class was over etc. I think this was a great video to watch...He is right on with Marcelo. I also trained with him! Marcelo is a genius on the ground. I have NEVER seen anything like it EVER! I am making a trip to see Marcelo again.
@rspkk0 If this was serious I want to guillotine you in front of your parents and/or children. If it was a troll/joke, I salute you and am laughing out loud.

@ hoops2425...Because he is the Jesus Christ of this sport. People flocked around Christ to hear anything that came out of his mouth because that shit was crazy, freaky and the truth....hence the Bravo. I would love to meet Eddie, he is genius. lol
@MangaMoogleMan Listen to the first thing Eddie says. "Finally, another dude that knows the over under (like me because im such a fing genius). He's figured out thats it different (like me, but damn it took you a long time marcelo, you must be slow) its not a double under. What a joke. He's looking down his nose, its not praise. He's letting everyone know marcelo is so good because of what HE has known all long. So full of himself. blah blah blah....
@MangaMoogleMan Royce doesnt have the audacity to speak about why Marcelo is so good. Once again, its like a college basketball player, talking about how HE KNOWS exactly why Jordan was so great. While at the same time Jordan espouses a training philosophy that goes directly against the college players philosophy. Marcelo is a huge proponent of GI training. Eddie is mr no-gi, gi-hater. Yet, he is better known than Marcelo Garcia from running his mouth so much. What a shame. Undeserved.
@MangaMoogleMan You can always spot a brainwashed nuthugger when they start down this line. You dont even have to know any BJJ to see that Eddie Bravo is not a world class grappler. He's just another black belt who has never won any major event. He didnt even place in the ADCC he is famous for. He has refused to compete since and back up all the talk. There have been many upsets in the ADCC besides Bravo. But the fact remains HE HAS NEVER PLACED. Now go cry your eyes out. The Truth hurts
Two points: 1) Sad that a guy like Marcelo Garcia can't have a platform (i.e. Olympics) where his otheworldly skills can be recognized. Instead we have 50 swimming events that let guys like Phelps win 10 medals... we can't get one medal event for grapplers? (It would be nice also, to let grapplers compete for multiple medals too... wrestlers, judoers, BJJers in submission wrestling). My second point that it's sad that a "nice" guy is so rare in this sport. It's full of Ed Hardy douches...
That’s what's SO cool about bjj and mma, every time you think, “Who could ever beat this guy?” Someone figures him out and comes up with something new... Love it!!!
Marcelo Garcia is indeed a legend and has won 'tons of gold medals', but he is a great athlete and has been privileged to have trained in Brazil since a young age.
Eddie Bravo, on the other hand, is unathletic and started training at a relatively late age. And yet, he tapped out Royler as a BROWN BELT.
Eddies game is just as attribute based as anyone's. Just because he isn't strong doesn't mean he is a poor athlete. The guy can put both his feet behind his head and pop a lotus without using his hands. His joints are made of rubber. I think both guys have a lot to contribute to any BJJ practitioner.
If you think Marcelo wins due to athleticism, you have no idea what BJJ is about. Ive met Marcelo, and athlete doesnt come to mind. He is a technician. Keep making excuses for him and just makes him look worse. Eddie is a nobody compared to Marcelo, and those are simple facts. He isnt a world champ of anything. Marcelo is a world no-gi and gi champ many times over. Eddie is just another BJJ black belt with a lot of talk
@blazethesecond rubber guard isnt anything great... Its cool and what not but Marcelo's X-guard compared to Eddies Rubber guard.. id take x guard all day...
Not every technique can be used in MMA, If we are talking BJJ... X guard all day..
If we talk MMA, i still wouldnt use rubber guard.. Thats not my style.
@blazethesecond Calling them both greats is equivocating. You cant use Eddie and Marcelo in the same sentence about BJJ and be serious. Do you know how many world titles Marcelo holds in no-gi AND gi? Its crazy. Marcelo is a super star, an all time great. Eddie is a NOBODY at this level. He's not the only person in the world that got one sub on a world champ. I saw a blue belt do that once. He's just the only one who milks it for years without ever competing again to back it up.
Oh yea you are right, that video with Arlovski is much newer. And really? Marcello Garcia did that to Marc Laimon? Where is this video? I need to see this
@CantBeShook no no no, Marcelo is not better than Rickson...Rickson Gracie is the best in history...he has not been taped since he was blue belt..you can ask Andre Galvao about Rickson...Marcelo wont be able to submit Rickson
@lampard1986 Rickson is an old man and Marcelo is in his prime. Marcelo is better at this age than Rickson was at the same age. And you're getting Rickson and Roger mixed up talking about not being taped since a blue belt.
And what has Andre Galvao got to do with Rickson or have you confused him and Roger again?
@CantBeShook Andre Galvao was training with Rickson, preparing for world champ. or Adcc,i am not sure, but in the interview with galvao that i watched he said that Rickson destroy him with absolute no problem..he said that there is no one other on the planet ho can humiliate him the way Rickson did..and Rickson is 50+..andre galvao is 1 of the best on the planet and if he said that Rickson is the best you better listen to him.i am not saying that he will 100% tap Garcia, but marcelo wont tap him
@CantBeShook demian maia says that rickson is the best bjj player he has ever rolled with and he has rolled with both of them. i trust hhis opinion more then yours
@scarso55555 I think that has to do with more of a respect of a legend. A non-competitive Rickson at fifty something couldn't compete in the adult black belt divisions of the Munidals and win. It just wouldn't happen.
@speshalsauz i agree with you that at this age he doesnt have the athleticism to compete now, however, bjj is about technique and not athletics, royler gracie was getting submitted by his father who was well into his 70's, just because he isnt you enough to compete with marcelo, doesnt mean he doesnt have superior TECHNIQUE and an understanding of jiu-jitsu.
@scarso55555 It's also a different era. My instructor trained with Rickson and all those guys I hear his stories on how much more simplistic the game was then. It is so evolved now. Guys like Mendes and Marcelo and Cobrinha have revolutionized the game over the past decade. Much the same way that Terere and Comprido and Gurgel did in the 90's. If Rickson at 28 competed with Marcelo now, he still wouldn't win I don't think. The guys then wouldn't be prepared for what BJJ is now. Just my op
@speshalsauz my instructor jason sullins told me that he thinks rickson would be successful in grappling today if he was in his prime because he was ahead of his time when he did compete and the things he was doing back in the day are the same things people are doing now. he said he agrees that bjj has evolved but that rickson has such a great understanding of the basic principles of bjj that he is almost impossible to beat. look at roger gracie, he beats everyone using basic moves.
@poganla123 ??? I never said he did or would say that. Doesn't change the fact that Marcelo is better. As Eddie Bravo says in the video, Ricardo Liborio says Marcelo's the best ever. His word is word more than anybody's.
@jappanese Can you explain your question better? The Darce is my best submission and my favorite choke by far. It's incredibly versatile and has really been a big piece of the evolution of modern submission grappling.
@WhtMike2006 if i remember why i wrote that its cause.. i dont see people use the darce in example mma often, and ive heard that its a very good choke. so whats the deal with it? its good but people dont use it???
@jappanese There are a few reasons. The Darce didn't get very popular in no-gi grappling till 2006-2007. MMA usually takes some time to catch up. It has been used a lot more recently. Kendall Grove put Alan Belcher to sleep with it. Paulo Thiago put Mike Swick to sleep with it. Terry Etim, Johnny Hendricks, Babalu, and Rani Yahya have also used it recently.
@jappanese cont... Joe Stevenson got close to finishing it. Efrain Escudero from the UFC used it. People are doing it. It's going to be used more and more every year. It took a while for people to do the Anaconda after Big Nog first did it. It's the same situation with Marcelo's elbow up Guillotine. Guys like Urijah Faber and Dan Miller are starting to finally do it. Peruvian Necktie is in the same spot also.
@WhtMike2006 Some people cant darce as good as others because of their body type.. If you have long arms you can probably darce very well, if your arms are short it is difficult to darce someone your size or bigger... Im 5'8 150 with longer than average arms for my size, i LOVE the darce it is one of my favorite moves, the brabo is also one of my favorites... Since its pretty much a darce choke..
Dare I say, after watching ADCC 2009 and watching Marcelo Garcia regularly on MGinaction against guys like Ryan Hall and Ben Askren, I think Marcelo's Guillotine is even better than his RNC.
@bobangel87 Marcelo is very strong my man. He's pretty ripped. His legs are the size of tree trunks and his hips are SO powerful. If he gets you in a Guillotine, North/South choke, or RNC, it will feel like your head is about to tear off. His grips strength, everything... He's amazingly strong. A butterfly sweep from his stting guard is like getting Judo thrown.
master eddie B, one the best grapplers ont he planet, if HE is sayin garcis is the best he most be. obviously he's top 3. easily. but THE best? can see that.
eddie bravo did just one thing in his life beat royler.he never made other good fight with anybody else, never.who have classes with him please call 911 because he is the biggest thief in the world if i´m wrong please somebody tell me how many titles he have in big competitions?marcelo won 3 adcc and many others championships.please eddie, keep searching leo vieira in your back because until now you don´t know where you are......
@tonigrego it's not like eddie said he could beat marcelo...in fact he said he was confident he wouldn't last 2 minutes with him. idk what's with the hate?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Mercel Didnt Figure out or invent it the over under. It existed in ancient japan. KOsen Judo IS BJJ. Put credit where it is due. Know your history eddie,
@ipyonoti he's not saying Marcelo invented but he just figured out it's significance in competition and develop his use of it at a high level he's just admiring Marcelo's technical ability not saying he invented anything
@ipyonoti very true dude eveyone talks about the X guard being founded by marcelo and deep half guard with paragon its like dude this shits been out for ages in brazil
Put credit where it is due. Kosen Judo = Origin of BJJ. Rickson said in his book that the japanese held back on teaching and taught only the basics because they were non-japanese and thus had to learn and evolve the art on their own. Helio did improve it, But he did not invent it. ALL of it is still from Kosen Judo.
This may be a random question... but does anyone know any excercises I can do to improve my squeeze power ? replies would be greatly appreciated...Thank You
You can do pull ups like alsmalley said, or just hang from the pull up bar for like five mins or as long as you can if you cant do five mins. I also saw one of the mma guys doing pull ups with tennis balls in between his palms. He said it works the muscles in the hands.
He is really good but best on the planet? He didn't beat Pe de Pano. One of the best sure. THE best? Maybe one day. Just to speculate about interesting things I wonder how Fedor would do in world class grappling only competition?
btw way i do love how eddie breaks down everything, and how he likes any technique that works.
but i never have known anyone to do the double unders, except when people stand up on them.
everyone does over under, just think where marcelo got it from, fabio gurgel who was a jacare blackbelt who was rolls gracies black belt. this shit has been here forever
@fatguyonthc Marcelo is def prly the best p4p grapper on the planet. i mean there some others in the conversation for best p4p grappler like jarcare, and roger. but i think marcelo is the best.
I have to agree to a point. he is definitely one of the best.
but, when you think about his mentality, you will understand. In science, the researchers are actively trying to disprove whatever thesis is currently under question.

Keep making excuses for him and just makes him look worse. Eddie is a nobody compared to Marcelo, and those are simple facts. He isnt a world champ of anything. Marcelo is a world no-gi and gi champ many times over. Eddie is just another BJJ black belt with a lot of talk
speedgliding 1 year ago
@speedgliding
Ok I must have missed the remark but why the attack on Bravo?
godofthisshit 1 year ago
@speedgliding They're both bjj greats
Yeah marcelo was a better grappler
but eddie was more influential
Without eddie there would be no rubber guard
and everyone would be sticking to traditional brazilian jiu jitsu
and BTW...why don't any mma fighters use x guard?
blazethesecond 1 year ago
@blazethesecond rubber guard isnt anything great... Its cool and what not but Marcelo's X-guard compared to Eddies Rubber guard.. id take x guard all day...
Not every technique can be used in MMA, If we are talking BJJ... X guard all day..
If we talk MMA, i still wouldnt use rubber guard.. Thats not my style.
damng 1 year ago
@blazethesecond Calling them both greats is equivocating. You cant use Eddie and Marcelo in the same sentence about BJJ and be serious. Do you know how many world titles Marcelo holds in no-gi AND gi? Its crazy. Marcelo is a super star, an all time great. Eddie is a NOBODY at this level. He's not the only person in the world that got one sub on a world champ. I saw a blue belt do that once. He's just the only one who milks it for years without ever competing again to back it up.

i'm sorry but Rickson is the best jiu jitsu player who has ever lived. I dont care what u say.
playerjamesk 1 year ago
@playerjamesk No, Marcelo is better than Rickson because his BJJ is more evolved and rounded.
CantBeShook 1 year ago 10
@CantBeShook no no no, Marcelo is not better than Rickson...Rickson Gracie is the best in history...he has not been taped since he was blue belt..you can ask Andre Galvao about Rickson...Marcelo wont be able to submit Rickson
lampard1986 1 year ago
@lampard1986 Rickson is an old man and Marcelo is in his prime. Marcelo is better at this age than Rickson was at the same age. And you're getting Rickson and Roger mixed up talking about not being taped since a blue belt.
And what has Andre Galvao got to do with Rickson or have you confused him and Roger again?
CantBeShook 1 year ago
@CantBeShook Andre Galvao was training with Rickson, preparing for world champ. or Adcc,i am not sure, but in the interview with galvao that i watched he said that Rickson destroy him with absolute no problem..he said that there is no one other on the planet ho can humiliate him the way Rickson did..and Rickson is 50+..andre galvao is 1 of the best on the planet and if he said that Rickson is the best you better listen to him.i am not saying that he will 100% tap Garcia, but marcelo wont tap him
lampard1986 1 year ago
@lampard1986 yeah but rickson has nothing on Gokor. There is a handful of fighters Rickson never excepted to fight and he was one of them
mma850 1 year ago
@CantBeShook demian maia says that rickson is the best bjj player he has ever rolled with and he has rolled with both of them. i trust hhis opinion more then yours
scarso55555 10 months ago
@scarso55555 I think that has to do with more of a respect of a legend. A non-competitive Rickson at fifty something couldn't compete in the adult black belt divisions of the Munidals and win. It just wouldn't happen.
speshalsauz 10 months ago
@speshalsauz i agree with you that at this age he doesnt have the athleticism to compete now, however, bjj is about technique and not athletics, royler gracie was getting submitted by his father who was well into his 70's, just because he isnt you enough to compete with marcelo, doesnt mean he doesnt have superior TECHNIQUE and an understanding of jiu-jitsu.
scarso55555 9 months ago
@scarso55555 It's also a different era. My instructor trained with Rickson and all those guys I hear his stories on how much more simplistic the game was then. It is so evolved now. Guys like Mendes and Marcelo and Cobrinha have revolutionized the game over the past decade. Much the same way that Terere and Comprido and Gurgel did in the 90's. If Rickson at 28 competed with Marcelo now, he still wouldn't win I don't think. The guys then wouldn't be prepared for what BJJ is now. Just my op
speshalsauz 8 months ago
@speshalsauz my instructor jason sullins told me that he thinks rickson would be successful in grappling today if he was in his prime because he was ahead of his time when he did compete and the things he was doing back in the day are the same things people are doing now. he said he agrees that bjj has evolved but that rickson has such a great understanding of the basic principles of bjj that he is almost impossible to beat. look at roger gracie, he beats everyone using basic moves.
scarso55555 8 months ago
@scarso55555 Rickson also likes to embellish things. 400-0 ;)

whats the deal with the d'arce choke btw?
jappanese 1 year ago
@jappanese Can you explain your question better? The Darce is my best submission and my favorite choke by far. It's incredibly versatile and has really been a big piece of the evolution of modern submission grappling.
WhtMike2006 1 year ago
@WhtMike2006 if i remember why i wrote that its cause.. i dont see people use the darce in example mma often, and ive heard that its a very good choke. so whats the deal with it? its good but people dont use it???
jappanese 1 year ago
@jappanese There are a few reasons. The Darce didn't get very popular in no-gi grappling till 2006-2007. MMA usually takes some time to catch up. It has been used a lot more recently. Kendall Grove put Alan Belcher to sleep with it. Paulo Thiago put Mike Swick to sleep with it. Terry Etim, Johnny Hendricks, Babalu, and Rani Yahya have also used it recently.
WhtMike2006 1 year ago
@jappanese cont... Joe Stevenson got close to finishing it. Efrain Escudero from the UFC used it. People are doing it. It's going to be used more and more every year. It took a while for people to do the Anaconda after Big Nog first did it. It's the same situation with Marcelo's elbow up Guillotine. Guys like Urijah Faber and Dan Miller are starting to finally do it. Peruvian Necktie is in the same spot also.
WhtMike2006 1 year ago
@WhtMike2006 Some people cant darce as good as others because of their body type.. If you have long arms you can probably darce very well, if your arms are short it is difficult to darce someone your size or bigger... Im 5'8 150 with longer than average arms for my size, i LOVE the darce it is one of my favorite moves, the brabo is also one of my favorites... Since its pretty much a darce choke..
So it all depends on body type...
damng 1 year ago
Dare I say, after watching ADCC 2009 and watching Marcelo Garcia regularly on MGinaction against guys like Ryan Hall and Ben Askren, I think Marcelo's Guillotine is even better than his RNC.
WhtMike2006 1 year ago
marcelo it awesome, imagine if he had strength too
bobangel87 1 year ago
@bobangel87 Marcelo is very strong my man. He's pretty ripped. His legs are the size of tree trunks and his hips are SO powerful. If he gets you in a Guillotine, North/South choke, or RNC, it will feel like your head is about to tear off. His grips strength, everything... He's amazingly strong. A butterfly sweep from his stting guard is like getting Judo thrown.

You can do pull ups like alsmalley said, or just hang from the pull up bar for like five mins or as long as you can if you cant do five mins. I also saw one of the mma guys doing pull ups with tennis balls in between his palms. He said it works the muscles in the hands.
