  • ....Tommy was actually inspired by *Australian Aboriginal* initiation rites....NOT African! It does "sound" like the animals and birds of the Australian Outback..The Corroboree...and the Didgeridoo, (an aboriginal instument) It is a tribute to the Dreamtime and really honours the unique sounds of the desert and bush as well as evoking the vastness and ancient space, which is our continent, Australia :) Magnificent Tommy <3

  • I play the guitar for a long time now, for like 15-20 years or so, but after I saw this I really want to throw my guitar into the fire, burn it up into ashes, buy me a new guitar and do the same as I did with the old one...

  • Hm.. at the concert he said that wrote that song while being inspired by the mystical african ceremonies.

  • I make that sounds when Im hungry ;3

  • 1 guitar only.. Alien..

  • Nobody plays guitar like Tommy!! . . .

  • wait...I thought they didn't allow porn on youtube...

  • Not even gonna ask if there's a Tab for this :)

how does one write "scratch the guitar" in musical notation.

  • Ludwig Van Beethoven once said "Guitar is the small orchestra"....... It's Tommy Emmanuel who actually proved his quote.......

  • Any person can pick up a guitar and learn to play it. But not many can instill emotions and create an atmosphere such as this.

  • there's 14 idiots i'd like to smack!

  • I'd trade both left and right and all the skin from my face.

  • I was front row in Sydney and i cannot give this guy enough credit, simply incredible.

  • I like how he itched his nose in rhythym

  • Please check out Tommy's other Youtube clips such as "Mombasa", "Classical gas" and his improv (rare) show. He's freakin awesome!!!

  • Just saw this LIVE in Würselen, and I gotta say, you really gotta be there to feel the bass shake up your bones and your very soul.

  • @TheJaybuck I KNOW RIGHT. I actually closed my eyes and let the music and mind take me on. He is truley like meth. YOU NEED MORE OF IT!

  • Just amazing, love it,

  • Nous sommes allés le voir samedi dernier avec mon conjoint... C'est un extraterrestre, on était bluffés tous les deux !! Super soirée !!!

  • @Emelila Et encore j'imagine que "bluffé" est un peu faible ! ;-)

  • He feels and plays the rhythm of his soul deep from within. Out of the box

  • Anyone familiar with the process of initiation should accept this as a reasonable facsimile of the emotional experience involved: highly charged and intense. That Tommy can produce such an accurate representation of an intimate spiritual and physical experience is a work of art par excellence: A true representation of spiritual realities. Bravo!!

  • Look! He is having sex with a guitar! Cool!

  • 11 people aren't getting initiated.

  • See this live and you have sex

  • At first I was lightheartedly thinking "Guitar: You're doing it wrong" but then an additional two seconds passed and I retracted that thought. Now that I've watched the whole thing, I've gotta say, I think this is the only guy that's playing the guitar right, and that everyone else is "Playing it wrong."

  • 2:21 i think he is having sex with his guitar

  • @Smittz1230 Not to worry. Some day you'll grow up enough to understand the difference between "having sex" and making love. He's making love to his guitar.

  • @AZStony so true. I don't think I've ever truly seen someone play the guitar until now.

  • This shows that he put his emotions in his music.Music must give emotions otherwise it isn't music. However tommy emmanuel can give emotions in a particular way in my opinion;because while he plays his guitar, he moved his body and face and give a little more touch at the music.....do you agree?

  • i have never seen a guitar used in such a way... damn gifted!!!

  • He paints a picture and tells a story all to music but I must admit you have to watch it.

I think he is amazing. Thanks for posting.

  • Tommy might consider going to guitar addicts anonymous xD

  • maybe you're correct, this was shot a long time ago.

  • wow!

  • Maybe the 11 didn't like his shirt or hair or something. We have a saying in England 'you can't educate pork'

  • I don't think 11 people liked him sayin "this is from white fella to black fella"

  • Really find him just plain disturbing. Great guitarist though.

  • Take your shirt off, lie down in the dirt outside, close your eyes, and listen to this on headphones. It is *that* kind of epic.

  • @sammyaspen hope there's no ants in the grass...

  • 11 people have no life

  • i saw him play this live once and all i can say to the 11 people who disliked it: YOU ARE ALL FUCKED IN THE HEAD!

  • absolute genius. completely captures an aboriginal feel to telling a story. this mans hands and musical mind are that of a higher being. this piece is definatly moving.

  • @djtapp2007 Tommy doesn't read or write music in the "on paper" variety. By the way, it's not just a guitar, he has a little help from a midi system. You just won't get that much sound and those kind of sounds out of any guitar without a little help. He'll be in Kansas City again very soon the 19th if I'm not mistaken. I can't keep up with him, he moves around so fast.

  • @tootall11211 Correction, He simply has a delay unit. All of the sounds are from his guitar :-) I know it's a little pedantic. But his audio data is not being transferred into midi data and then synthesised or anything. It's just purely a delay unit :-) Otherwise. This is another side of Tommy that I had not heard as yet. Great track ;-)

  • @beefheartvliet, dude. Do you know him personally? I do. What he uses on that particular piece, I'm not sure, but he does have a midi interface with a number of presets available via foot switches. He's always experimenting, no telling what he's going to have from one time to the next. Some of the things he has are either his invention, or those of fellow guitarists, not over the counter purchases. You would not believe how many guitars and toys he owns. He's been around a long time.

  • @tootall11211 Well that serves me right for trying to be a bit of a smart arse :-) Needless to say, I'm not lucky enough to know him personally. Thanks for a little bit of insight though.

  • @beefheartvliet see my comment above, however these days he does use a midi interface and foot switches for the presets. I know him personally, the gear and guitars he owns is amazing, though most of his gig guitars look like they've been thru battles.

  • @tootall11211 well dude, you might be right about what he was using in that particular video. It was filmed quite some time ago. He doesn't always take a whole lot of his gear on the road... depends on what he's doing where, because traveling with a lot of gear is a pain, as you can well imagine, and with airlines being like they are, sometimes when he gets there, he has no gear at all. Usually, it turns up... but there have been times it didn't. Nobody that's seen him play will let him borrow 1

  • i love how all the pretentious and uptight people will watch the first two minutes of this video and brand it rubbish. If they listened from ~3 minutes onward they'd see that he in fact does start playing a tune. but to control the dynamics and the delay for the intro takes a lot of skill and evokes some very strong imagery in some of the more broad-minded people.

  • with all the music in the world to choose from, perhaps it would be a good idea to choose this piece last Tommy. This is ok for the stone age crowd or just plain stoned, but paying audiences prefer guitar playing. I hope he leaves this one off the set list next time.

  • @roibasses

    well isn't someone close-minded

  • @MrJennion No, mind is open... just not so wide that my brains fell out. I have Tommy and his brother play. And I enjoy them rather much. But this piece is pathetic. Just like modern art. I'm sorry, but I beg to differ on this. This was the worst piece in the show 3 weeks ago... everyone one went to the bathroom during this number.

  • @roibasses hey, jerkwad, take a look at some of his other work. Tommy played with all the greats, including Chet Atkins and Les Paul. What have you done in your life that makes you such an expert? Just because something doesn't fit a particular mold, that doesn't mean it's bad. You're no one to talk, you probably don't even play. I play five different instruments and am working on picking up a couple of more. It's people like you that really tick me off, you don't have a clue. Shut the hell up.

  • @tootall11211 I am quite well aware of Mr Emannuel's history and expertise. What have I done with my life?... aside from being a musician for over 30 years... I just make instruments for others, like Tommy to, play.

  • @roibasses Somehow, I don't believe you. One, no real musician would dog another that way. Two, if indeed you make instruments, doggin Tommy like that, a guy that uses up a lot of instruments, is not good business. No, I think you're a fraud that doesn't know beans about anything, or else you're just a jerk AND a very poor businessman. Only one way you can prove you make instruments to me, make a six string guitar with a neck about four inches wide at the narrowest point. Bet you can't.

  • @tootall11211 whomsover talks trash on tommy should be CRUCIFIED

  • @roibasses Well you obviously never listened to it then....This IS indeed a classic.

  • OMG Wow!

This guy is appearing in the West Midlands too on Mayday, i cannot believe my luck!!!

The man is a GOD!!! x

  • Absofuckinglutely great sound!!!!!

  • master fukin piece what the hell is that i dream about beeing good as him

  • He is Tommy

  • Chaotic, nebulous, and wild to driving, shimmering determination and back to the chaotic wilderness. Seems as much a performance as a meditative connection to a spirit and a lesson taught through music. Contemplative and enjoyable.

  • He's an AAALIEN!

  • i didnt know that guitar is able to make so many sounds.

  • ahh.. back when his guitar still had some skin left on in

  • Quite possibly the single greatest translation of music in all of history. And @footstomper1 ....Ummmm.....can I please have some of what you are smoking? This is BY FAR one of the BEST videos on this site. Why you are blind to talent and ability....I'm sure we will never know. I'm not sure what style or genre of music you listen to...but I can rest easy knowing it can't touch this. There is no such thing as the world's greatest guitar player...but there is no one better than Tommy Emmanuel

  • @footstomper1 First show, then talk.

  • biggest waste of rubbish on youtube... close to wot i`d do when stoned on the guitar late at night, an thinkin i`m great!

  • @footstomper1 i assure you there are far bigger pieces of rubbish on youtube: do u seriously mean to suggest that "friday" by rebecca black tops this?? or all the bieber vids out there? because that immediately disqualifies you from having any right to a musical opinion, and i do hope for man kinds sake you never reproduce.

That being said this is brilliant composition and performance from the world's finest guitarist and one of the greatest musicians in history. I dare you to do better!

  • @footstomper1 its good. just needs to lose 2 minutes off the intro :P

  • Wow, the imagery that comes to mind when hearing this is amazing! It's so clear...

What an amazing artist. He's a guitarist's guitarist. He's why I picked up the guitar almost 30 years ago in the first place. I'm usually awestruck every time I here Tommy play. Simply awestruck. Peace.

  • His skill, synchronization, and feel for the guitar are impeccable. You can't just throw in some delay and be able to do this.

  • I cant get that melody out of my head. Tommy is a master. What a journey this song is.

  • Han är ju awesome!

  • Great ! Tommy u r genius! thanks.

  • Is there any way to purchase this performance somewhere? I'm trying to see if Sierra Centre Stage sells its shows but having no luck...

  • I remember seeing him play this when I was about 8 years old. I was at the state fair with my dad and brother. It was pretty fun. By the way, this dude is freakishly hard on his guitars....somebody had to say it. :)

  • This guy is not human! He's the Guitar God!!!!

  • 10 people are jealous

  • Never taken peyote, but I have a feeling which ever journey I'd embark to if I did, this would definitely be playing in the background.

  • Love it, to me new sound from a gutar, just wonder how he wrote the song/notes. lol

    1 off.

  • holy fuck this song has some wicked melodies going on

  • @1125112511251125 totally agree with you there.

  • too much pink floyd broham.

  • every time I watch him play or listen to him, I'm inspired to do more with my life, to see more with my eyes, to dream more with my mind. I have always considered myself wild at heart, yet each experience of Tommy Emmanuel is like waking up from a slumber and finding a new world of possibility and adventure that awaits.

  • Guitarist and performer like no other...

  • Guitar and performer like no other...

  • just amazing

  • Ive never been into Tommy Emanual, but after watching his clips,i wish i got into him along time ago...

  • more unreplicable than the Mona Lisa

  • beyond creativity!

  • He uses simple echo, then plays in perfect sync with it to produce the most brilliant, unearthly effects. This man is far beyond "talented" or "gifted." Calling him that would be like saying the sun is "bright."

  • blows my mind away) especially the heart part at the end)

  • 4:39 haha he's telling the guy to turn up the monitor volume, and even thumbs up when he's satisfied..... and yet the song plays on flawlessly.

  • is he really doing every sound only with his guitar???

  • @KingKoboldMcMarco Yeah, the only effect he is using is a delay (which make the echo...) WHICH IS AMAZING.. to this day I can't forget when I met him... I've actually had the privliedge to play next to him on stage, a masterful guitar player... and a remarkable person...

    Long Live Tommy...

  • the best

  • Tommy Emmanuel was given the gift of walking on water but he chose guitar instead. If Tommy Emmanuel was in a fight against Chuck Norris, just a little tap on his guitar would make Chuck Norris beg for mercy. Tommy Emmanuel rapes his guitars he doesn't play them, also..they enjoy being raped by him.

  • Brilliance, utter brilliance... I would definitely trade my left nut for this godlike talent

  • This sounds incredible live, tommy warned the audience that he wasn't on drugs before he played this and improvises the intro and outro different every time he plays it.

  • i first heard this song when i was about 10, this is the first time i learned that he actually did all those sounds in the intro on his guitar. mind blown.

  • @panmitz

sure it's scratch- scratch- hit- scratch-wipe- scratch-hit: repeat 22 times

    LOL

  • 3:30 SHIT JUST GOT REAL!

  • My god, this guy must be like the 4th most underated guitarist ever

  • @HOOMV Nice one. *Goes and steals idea for cliffs of dover video*

  • @HOOMV Just because someone is a great guitarist doesn't mean he's underrated.

  • @Ianuarius85 It was a joke, this video was linked on an article called "top 10 underated guitarists" on Ultimate Guitar and Tommy Emmanuel came 4th

  • @HOOMV I see.

  • @HOOMV #1 Most underrated guitarist ever BUCKETHEAD

  • @SpartanLaserCanon

Really? Wow, you need to get out more.

  • WoW just WoW

  • If this guy has a wife... I am sure she is extremely jealous of his guitar.

  • @MrCrackbabyjones ...or not. Imagine the way he could finger-pick her...

  • Can somebody give me some tabs for this? :P

    :-D :-D :-D

  • @panmitz

    LAWL :P

  • @panmitz

    HAH! Good luck -,-

  • Awesome!

  • And THAT is exactly why Tommy Emmanuel is one of only four C.G.P.'s!!

  • If I close my eyes,I don't even know I'm listening to a guitar...It's the most amazing thing I've ever heard from one instrument....raw talent,genius....Thanks Tommy!!

  • He did a realy good(if not the best) version of this song a sommer night in Sweden this year(2010), i'm so glad i have seen him live. It's something you never forgett...

  • O.O awe

  • Sounds like the sound track for an acid trip. This guy is amazing, a bit out there... but still amazing.

  • Comment removed

  • unbelievable fresh, inspiring style!!

  • I always liked the way Jimi Hendrix tested the boundary of a guitar, but Tommy does everything to it short of impregnate it.

  • I once played this just as well as Tommy does in front of a huge audience. Then I woke up.

  • @ErnilEnNaur I think I had the very same dream. lol : )

  • How in the fucking hell could anybody - no matter what you like and what you listen to - dislike this amazing, unique and incredible piece?

  • he maybe went to the crossroads and make deal with the devil.

  • class, I saw him 'play' this at Southport in England a few years back. I had never heard him play before and in a live venue this blows your socks off.

  • 感服しました

  • Don't forget his brother Phil, they are both unbelievable guitarists.

  • Mind blowing

  • There will never be another man like him musically. The phone must have rung when God was pouring in the music and said to one of the angels...."Here, hold this"...and the angel just kept pouring...and pouring...

  • O_O I can't believe my ears......i'm left speachless.....

  • genius......

    absolute genius......

  • History will oneday look back and they will be talking about how great Tommy Emmanuel was, so lucky that we can see him live now, if you ever get a chnace folks go see him live because seeing him here TRUELY does not do him any justice.

  • Btw tommy uses a reverb unit and sends out a loop and then plays back over and against it as he plays, thats why he gets that amazing effect , thats why you see him reach down and make slight adjustments during the performance, totally brilliant !!

  • I'm an aussie and grew up watching tommy play live, i have been to 8 of his australian concerts going back to the 80's, i've met him 3 times, i'm so glad the world is now getting to see what us aussies have always known, that tommy emmanuel is simply the best ever !!!!

  • There is no such thing as "Just a Guitar"..

That's why he manages to provoke these amazing sounds

  • He could tell a goodnight story with that guitar, he is so freaking unbelievable good at playing his guitar. (in every single way, that is!)

Before i die, i wanna meet him!

  • if a blind guy listened to this he'd think there is a hole band playing this

  • Ok, I'm sure there are plenty of young Asian dudes already copying Tommys work here so they can post it on YouTube and show us how easy it is for them, but hey, the genius in people like Tommy and Andy Mkee is not just their technical proficiency its their incredible IMAGINATION. Tommy could copy Andy's solo's and play it just as well as Andy and vise versa. The reason they are two of the best is because their incredible imaginations, technical ability and their passion for people and music.

  • I met Tommy in a country town called Shepparton. Waiting patiently in line for what was my first feeling of infinity, with guitar in case and a smile ear to ear I asked politely 'can you sign my guitar please Mr Emmanuel?'

He opened the case and upon seeing the layer of dust on the guitar, responded:

'You must love your guitar, sorry I can't sign it'. What was disappointment then, is now that smile ear to ear again! Thx Tommy!

  • LOOKS LIKE HE IS >WANKING< !!!

  • When did Dwight get so good at guitar?

  • I will see him live this atumn! :)

  • It seems that the guiter has life !! I love his facevery enjoy playing it !

  • No I'm not scared Tommy, definetly not of you, you are excellent!!!! :-)))

  • That was some awesome effects! I have never heard guitar like that!

  • Did I just saw tht! I still can't believe it! :-O

  • been to a concert of his in Debrecen, Hungary. Man, was that MUSIC! He played this tune too, magical! And the ticket wan't even expensive 'cuz he doesn't have a manager to pay. What more can you ask for? He's also one helluva showman!

  • ♥

  • i've seen this live at Vilnius ( capital of Lithuania - Europe). jesus christ... OSOM

  • Tommy & brother Phil spent years perfecting their craft & both brothers are amazing on the guitar.

  • this guy could say "fuck you hendrix, im god" and get away with it

  • @oppai182 nonsens, compare the comparable.... my dady said me someday: "if you haven't got anyting to to say, then shut up"

  • @o0tortue0o wow you take shit to seriously and reply with shit i dont care about

  • Tommy gets so into his music! You can see it in his face and movements. You have to admire someone who can have so much fun with their music.

  • i envy those in the audience

  • @jaycedog005 sup dawg

  • Can someone tell me what this performance is off of? The vid information says 2002 but the only information about Tommy Emmanuel doing a Center Stage show I can find is in 2008.

  • RENVESANT

    BOULEVERSANT

A chaque concert live je suis scotchées.

    Une française conquise

  • this is wierdly amazing
