  • Ive been watching his videos alot and i think he was a bad ass until i saw the end

  • He put the strings on his bass in the 'wrong' order.

Whatever might help one to develop his/her own musical personality is right i guess.

  • @SirJohnathan @baronvonsatan You're both right. A bass guitar is essentially a (tenor) guitar tuned lower. But saying they are the same instrument is like saying a Ferrari 350 Can Am and a Ford F350 are "the same motor vehicle" because they are both indeed motor vehicles. In reality they are vastly different, purpose built for different applications and used in an entirely different manner.

Either way, Jeff is great and played an amazing arrangement.

  • Wow... no, that's all, just wow...

  • This is absolutely, fucking fantastic.

  • dang!!!! sounds a lot like a guitar

  • Nice.

  • the upside down strings kinda cool. but leave the guitarist shit at home, its gets gimmicky.

  • @hippiekiller0491 Funny how some no-name Youtuber tells an accomplished and talented musician and composer what he should and should not play, as if he really is in any position to order an artist to modify his artistic expression. What have you done in the world of music? Nothing? Well, then shut the fuck up.

  • @Muaguana when it comes to music, anyone is in a position to tell anyone anything. all opinions are equal

  • @hippiekiller0491 So wait... Are you calling guitarists gimmicky? Because, I hate to break it to you, the standard guitar and the bass guitar are the same instrument with differently tuned strings.

  • @SirJohnathan What? No they aren't!

  • @baronvonsatan Aside from scale-length difference - which is only there to compensate for the different string tensions - yes they are. They are both guitars, just at different tunings. The standard guitar is sometimes called a 'tenor' guitar (in that it sits between the alto and the bass), but the official tenor is different. There are also baritone guitars, then down to the bass guitar. In the way voices are classified, so are guitars; different ranges for the same thing.

  • @SirJohnathan They're in the same family. That does not make them "the same instrument." Next you'll be telling me a clarinet and a soprano saxophone are the same instrument just because they're both woodwinds and have a similar shape. Bass and guitar are obviously different instruments; I can't even believe I'm having this argument.

  • holy shit.

  • fucking amazing

    lol and the ending

  • Impressive!, just amazing!!!!!!!!!!.

    I wonder how can he handle a right-handed bass as a left-bass player!!! :O

  • wow! awesome! this guy rocks!

  • Don't look at me... I'm changing my pants

  • HOLY FRICKEN' SMOKES!

    ..that was pretty good.

What else you got, Jeff? (or should I say... bitch?)

    Awesomeness. :)

  • ...his tone is so godlike :)

  • Jeff Schmidt is realy AMAZING!!!

  • yeah lefthandes bass players rule

  • I was going to post my band's cover of Little Sunflower as a response to this, but it just doesn't compare.

Hats off to you and your virtuosity sir.

  • Damn that was nice.

  • Jaco would definetely be jealous!

His style is not heard much anymore. It would be nice if you formed a group and did a tribute. You are very talented!

  • 1st time i ever saw a bass player play his bass upside down

  • If so, you probably haven't heard of Jimmy Haslip of the Yellowjackets... he's been doing that ever since.

  • the bass itself isn't upside down, he simply inverted the nut and strings his bass in reverse order

  • like Haslip does?

  • uh some kind of custom made one....from the body shape and finish i would have to guess an mtd....possibly

  • hey so you developed all of those godly skills and knowledge on your own without lessons or anything? if so you must be like a strings prodigy or something, man XD

  • eres lo mas brutal que he visto y escuchado en mi vida, eres un nuevo aliento para poder seguir tocando y creando gracias

  • lol @ "bitch."

    + 1 to Badass?

  • what???.....he said BITCH??!?!!? i thought he only could say beautiful things, performing in the way he does....hahaha, "...bitch...hahaha"

  • He is an accual person you know, despite his music :P

  • If those are the strings I think they are, they aren't flat wounds...

  • this is fucking beautiful.

  • Good choice of words, djscoventry XD

  • What the? By any chance are those some sort of long electric guitar strings on the higher register? I'm confused, it sound like a guitar!

  • It's a piccolo bass. It's tuned ecatly one octave higher, in this case EADGC.

It does sound like a guitar but I think the point of this instrument is to get a different tone, a higher range of notes, and still be able to slap and do harmonics audibly.

  • A real hero.

  • love it! nice work

  • amazing tone!

  • One of the best I have seen on You Tube..Great use of rhythm and the notes just fly by,double stops, harmonics two handed tapping..he has the entire bag of tricks! My Hat is off to Jeff! Where did he come from, or rather Where has he been?...Jeff Berlin look out...new kid on block!

  • @FiveBelowZero this dude isnt really a new kid on the block... he won the international bass composition competition a few years ago. He was a berkeley student, and is now a teacher and proffessional musician i believe

  • sounds like flat wounds

  • sound a little bright for flat wounds, but yeah....

  • upside down inside out this guy is FU$&%@#$KING AMAZING ! thats mad!

  • bia-tch!...classic!

  • why..??do strings go from B,E,A,D,G instead of G,D,A,E,B??

  • well, he´s a lefty, and like more he probably he learned to play on a right-handed players bass (normal tuning)... so he learned to play upside down.

  • actually i think its EADGC

  • You usually notate strings from low to high BEADG. This bass is tuned a fourth higher, EADGC.

  • it's actually even higher than that, I play in EADGC and I can tell you this is certainly higher.

  • No its tuned in the circle of 4ths... u got a circle of 5ths (same thing but u inverted it :))

  • Little Sunflower. On bass. Bitch. Wow

  • Love what he's done with the song, but it's not his composition, its a freddie hubbard jazz standard (believe it or not - this guys really made it his own!)

    Lefties rule!

  • True enough, you guys have Jimi, Albert King, Jeff Schmidt, Tony Iommi, Paul McCartney...

  • as soon as i get another four string, im flipping the strings on this one. And im a righty, go figure.

  • might wanna make it into a piccolo as well

  • True.

  • he is reeeeally good, his harmony is poifect. nice bass with really nice tone as well, im onli hearing of this guy now for the first time, but it wnt be the last, well dun hooever posted it

  • this guy is unbelievable..!

  • Beautiful composition and stunning technique!

  • i believe it is

  • is that thing strung like a right handed bass?

  • ok this is much better than the apothostesis or whatever, very well played man, sick

  • Thanks for posting your 'little sunflower' Now it's a beautiful monday morning :D

  • no i was talking about his other bass

  • if any1 wants 2 know a piccolo bass is justthe last 4 strings of a 6 string. ifu want to make ur bass into 1 u gotta change the nut

  • polsihpirate a piccolo bass is tuned an octave higher not

    A-D-G-C ...thats a tenor bass.. ;)

  • piccolo basses are the SHIT!

fuck guitarists, we gettin' all up in their grill

  • heheheh... you're too funny jack...

  • very good and fresh playing!see my videos too,see y!

  • I've always had the thought that lefties should all learn to play just like right handed people

    but whatever,he's really good xD

  • Jeff, you are SO incredible!!!

  • Great twist on a jazz standard.

  • fucking beautiful

  • I wish I could play half as good!

  • why are the strings reversed?

  • Thats the way he likes to play. Beleive it or not, lefties strung right aren't that uncommon. Jimmy Haslip does it.

  • @lummond

What about righties strung left? :P

    I wanna do that.

  • eh... get a guitar

  • he is playing a guitar..a bass GUITAR... if he likes and is really good at playing the bass y should he get a regular guitar?

  • pfft get a bass

  • Agreed.

  • I have yet to see a guitar player to play like this.............says something about that instrument doesn't it?

  • Ummm, I actually plan to do this soon on my guitar, and I'm going to mix it up too, with strings alternatively thick and thin, to get some interesting results. Love playing in alternative tunings, that's all I play in, and I see this as just taking it a step further (though most people don't see the point).

There's innovation in both instruments. I don't think your comment is very justified, you make it sound like guitar isn't as good :P

  • That comment was for travman102... I actually thought he was talking about the way the thin strings are at the top, the strings are reversed. I thought that he was talking about that because I didn't see anything else that guitar players don't do. But now I see that travman102 was saying that guitar players don't use cool techniques, like all the tapping and percussive stuff. Even I do those things, and I consider myself an amateur, heh.

  • If you're looking for guitar playing like that check out Leo Kottke and Leon Redbone. They've been around for years.

  • i sold my bass on ebay after watching him...

  • hahaha!

  • god, he's an amazing fingerstylist. . . . .MUST catch him live in the area next time. . . .just wow.

  • Just chopped all my fingers off

  • Damn.

  • Jeff Schmidt

  • nasty!

  • Might have to trade my bass in for a 12 pack, that was truly sick.

  • haha, bitch!

  • Clay, you're absolutely right, sorry about that! I copied & pasted the tuning from his post on TalkBass about his Carvin 6-string... that's what happens when I don't pay attention... thanks for pointing that out.

  • awesome song dude!!! where is this guy from??

  • Why did he say "bitch" at the end ?

  • I want to say MTD with piccolo strings? Either way, that was fantastic!

  • He played a Pedulla bass, I'm pretty sure no piccolo strings. The high C is on top, that might have just thrown you off.

  • YardGnome, no, that's an MTD 535 strung A, D, G, C, F, Bb (piccolo).

  • Dave its a MTD 535 strung CDADF with a capo on the 3rd fret. There cant be 6 strings on a 535
