What software was used to create this? I don't...oh, I just saw the credits. Supported by Apple, Pixar, Autodesk...in other words, Blender won't exactly do this...
Well... in theory, with a really powerful computer, you might be able to achieve a similar effect, but it would require lots of work, and hours upon hours of rendering... I could be wrong, though. Unfortunately I haven't managed to figure out the Blender UI. Never messed with 3-d modeling before.
The only thing that I know of that could do this sort of simulation would be the FumeFX plugin for 3dsmax. I don't use Max or any affiliated plugins, though, so I wouldn't know. Yes, the Blender UI can be tricky at first, but it can generate some impressive results.
