u know how i found this song on YT? I found an olddddddd K-tel record (all scratched up, of course) and searched the tracks here to listen.....pays not to throw away the ol' vinyl!
@GuyWithNoName67 - Maybe because he was maturing as an artist, maybe because of his great chemistry with phenomenal bassist Ray Bennett? Flash had terrific talent and something truly special.
@GuyWithNoName67 I think Banks improved steadily each year. However, you really has some very nice licks in the early Yes sound. I just think that the songwriting here is more involved and intricate than the early Yes tracks so it probably seems to enhance his technicality. Also, check out some of Kaye's early Hammond licks on Then and the Prophet. You will see that his virtuosity was already well developed on the early Yes sound. Hope that gives you an insight.
all I've ever heard was the short version, thanx for posting...maybe I'll find the full length version of LOVE IS LIKE OXYGEN...that would just about make my day...
This was one of the true classics of that era. Everything in this song works, all instruments, vocals. Performed to perfection. This rivals most by Yes. One of my favorites.
@zappatx - Tony Kaye was still in Yes when Flash was being formed. Flash had another keyboard player lined up who pulled out just as they were about to record their first album. Tony agreed to do the sessions as a favor. In the meantime, Jon A. had suggested another great keyboard player for Flash, Rick Wakeman. He decided to take his own suggestion - he parted ways with Tony and acquired Rick.
@sherrynoland Thank you for this bit of information! I always want to give Kaye the benefit of the doubt but I had no idea. This shows that Yes was quite satisfied with Kaye up till that point and the Wakeman factor was drawn up with some additional decision making though I feel Yes would have had a better sound with Kaye through those years. Squire later said Tony's departure was never justified. Today Tony seems quite satisfied with his career.
A big difference I hear between this album and Yes of the era is the quality of the accompaniment to otherwise very nice melodies. The drumming is very ordinary, as is the bass playing. The bass playing at about 2:00 is just plodding. I'm appreciating Peter Banks' playing more than ever, the failure of this band was not his cross to bear.
@purpledynasty Good points. But I put a lot of what you're talking about on the shoulders of the producer. This bass player--Ray Bennet--is actually quite good. The drummer--and this comes from a drummer--is ordinary but good production would have helped. Still, good stuff.
@purpledynasty That's the first time Ray Bennett's bass playing was ever called 'ordinary'. Maybe you don't like the arrangement, Purple, but if you listen to Ray's playing throughout Flash, I think you'll agree he's got the chops to warrant his rep as one of the best. And Flash didn't really "fail". They simply broke up, impetuously, when they were doing very well. But they're coming back, so you'll have another opportunity to see what they can do without the talented, but troubled Banks.
originally heard the single and thought it was ok, but now that i see theres a lot more to it, this is unbelievable, this band should have been right up there with Yes
@Adamboms - Flash was right up there with Yes - endlessly compared, criticized and praised. Sad that they broke up so quickly before becoming as well known. But they're back! Let's see what happens now. Look for gigs & news on myspace - flashbennettcarter.
@imthedorf1964 - Flash had three original abums on Capitol - all currently reissued on Esoteric Recordings. A bootleg of live performances called 'Psychosync" was released on CD in the late 90's. And the reunited Flash has a brand new CD coming out soon!!! Go to their myspace/bennettcarter page for release date and other news.
Guys Sherrynoland took the time to get back with me so check out the live band rehearsal its well worth a look. Lets hope they tour again. I know I would go see them.
@MEPG75 If you said the guitar reminds you of "No Disgrace" by Yes that's probably because Yes and Flash are 'sister' bands. Peter Banks is playing guitar and he was also the original guitarist for Yes. Yes keyboardist, Tony Kaye is also playing on this track.
Well, Flash is one band you'll be able to "see again". You can't go back...you have to go forward - THEY'VE REUNITED! Ray Bennett and Colin Carter are back on the boards. :)))))))))
This was such a great song from the summer of 1972. Fragile, Close To The Edge, In The Can, Foxtrot and Trilogy were all released that year here in the states. What a vintage year for prog!
i GUESS i GOT LUCKY AND HAVE ALL 3 LP'S. And all very good!!! I got to see them live AT Spectrum, Philly. They were great as I knew they would be, AS most ot the recordings on the LP'S were 'live' in the studio. Very underrated.

Gibson Guitars honors Flash's "In the Can" as one of their "10 CLASSIC VINTAGE PROG-ROCK ALBUMS", and Pete Banks as one of its "10 Great Prog-Rock Guitarists".
Go to Gibson's web site, Lifestyle/Features section under "10-classic-prog-rock-albums" to read about it.
Banks is doing something called "Harmony in Diversity", and Kaye was last sighted in "Circa"...
Tony was never a member of FLASH. He was invited but declined and simply agreed to play on their first album. The confusion was created because that wasn't made clear on the album cover.
Hello to ALL that said "sounds a lot like YES." DUH. Especially a lot like the ....1st two albums? DUH-ble DUH! Peter Banks was the guitarist on those albums. In fact, he came up with the name YES! HAd all 3 Flash albums, all water damaged in 1998...BOO-F'in-HOO!
AWESOME!!! Thanks very much for posting that one. Great great photos in the video and the quality is STEREO ! Big pleasure for all, who like this great musicians and music of FLASH.
Thanks for posting this. I forgot all about this band until I heard Yes the other day and remembered Peter Banks and that great LP cover with the panties and thanks to you and "the tube", I am able to hear it again after 30 some-odd years!
@ansonia1976 Starcastle, holy crap! had two of their LPs. A Yes ripoff for sure - they were my favorite by far in 70s, saw multiple times - but still talented ... wish I'd seen Flash, boy
radio thank you for playin this,a freind of mine tommy donlon got killed on july 24 1972.he got hit by a car, near his house in waltham mass.when i hear this song i think of him, he was 14yo, this song was on the top 50 i think when he died.i always think of him when i hear this song, thanks again for playin this.its a underrated song.
I have always thought it was a criminal act to kick nout of Yes: together with Bruford he was the jazzy musician who made songs musically interesting.
Yes, totally, Peter's Rickenbacker tone was awesome and gave Yes that bright quality. And Bill Bruford's drumming kept everything truly interesting. Not to say I don't like Steve Howe, but Bank's was different in his own way. I'm a fan of Yes's work until Close to Edge, after that it kind of got a little pretentious for my taste.
Not a big fan of the loosely used term 'pretentious' . KISS is pretentious and rock musicians who act on stage without the chops to back it up. YES were never that to me. They were very sincere in all there work. Peter was great but can't compare to Howe but was definately a bonus to YES early work .
