  • Philippines contributed $125M to IMF in 2011

The Philippines contributed more than $125 million dollars to be disbursed by IMF to address the financial crisis confronting economies in Europe.

  • @machunochi1 its $500m, it was on yahoo news

  • Cont..

BSP reported that the Philippines, which enjoys growing foreign exchange reserves, has made available $251.5 million to the IMF to finance the assistance program for crisis-stricken countries.

  • Cont..

Of the amount, more than half was actually disbursed by the IMF to European countries battling the financial crisis, including Ireland, Portugal and Greece.

  • Cont..

Used to be a net borrower as far as its membership with the IMF was concerned. But in 2006, the country prepaid all its outstanding debts given its much-improved external liquidity position.

  • Cont..

In 2010, the Philippines became a lending IMF member by participating in the FTP as a creditor country.

  • For the full copy of the president's speech, you may google this title:

Speech of President Aquino at the Arangkada Philippines Forum, January 26, 2012

  • Taken from the president's speech:

I am aware of concerns about infrastructure underspending at the start of my administration. We spent much time and effort putting in place a system of expenditures and procurement that would curb graft.

  • Cont. -- Taken from the president's speech:

And with more prudent and transparent processes, the pesos spent for all of these projects went where they should—and not to line the pockets of the corrupt.

Now that the necessary project integrity checks and systems are in place, I am happy to report that as of January 13 of this year, around two-thirds of the P205.8-billion budget for the infrastructure program has been released.

  • Cont.

The driving principle behind my government has always been equitable progress and inclusive growth, and we believe that the success of these three sectors—tourism, infrastructure, and agriculture—redound to the benefit of the common Filipino people. They offer immediate opportunities to those on the margins: those who live in poverty; who are in the rural areas; who, by a systemic neglect of their dignity, have been disallowed more active participation in the national economy.

  • Cont. -- Taken from the president's speech:

These are the same people who are being targeted by our investments in social services, such as those in education, health, and community development. Once they reap the profits of our efforts and become skilled, healthy, empowered individuals, they will be the ones to spur the entire economy forward.

  • Great that the economy of the Philippines is increasing but realistically, how can it help the poor people of that country if the government is so corrupt? There are so many of them (Filipinos) who have left and want to leave their country because it (economy, etc...) is so bad there. I am not Filipino but hear this from Filipinos.

  • tayong mga pinoy ay sadyang matyaga talaga, kahit saan mo ilagay e pwedeng puede. isa lang yun sa mga dahilan kung bat hindi naman forever na mananatili ang pilipinas na nasa 3rd world countries. sa lahat ng success, may it be economically, tayong mga tao parin ang main contributor dyan kaya, go pinoy!

  • I LOVE MANILA

  • Arangkada Philippines Forum: Moving Twice as Fast

The 7-8% GDP Growth target is a very achievable target because this year, $20 billion in remittances will flow into the economy from the Filipino diaspora who seek work abroad because none is available at home.

But a floating economy is very different from a flying economy. The missing ingredient is higher levels of investment.

  • Cont..

Two years ago the leaders of the Joint Foreign Chambers in the Philippines, executives committed themselves to prepare recommendations to enable higher investment and job creation by attracting more foreign investors.

Last January 26, 2012, JFC observed the first anniversary of Arangkada with a Forum themed Moving Twice as Fast. Almost 50 experts have assessed the 471 recommendations made by the investors in a document to be released at the Forum. President Aquino gave the keynote talk.

  • Emerging Philippines?

MANILA, Philippines — Something unusual is happening. The Philippines — beleaguered recipient of decades of scorn for trailing its Asian competitors economically — is suddenly the darling of a bevy of enthusiastic analysts. “Philippines emerges from economic shade,” a headline thundered on the Asia Times website. “Is the Philippines emerging as an investor safe haven against economic weakness in the West and potential turbulence in China?” journalist Joel D. Adriano asked.

  • New York-based Moody's projects 5% growth for the Philippines this year, while the London-based think-tank Capital Economics Ltd wrote in a recent report that the Philippines could achieve growth as high as 8% if its business and infrastructure spending targets are hit. Government economic managers have promised to frontload many of those projects.

  • Middle Eastern Countries Investing in the Philippines 2012

Cash-rich Middle Eastern countries are driving the trend in the Philippines. A ranking official from the Department of Trade and Investment disclosed that Qatar will invest US$1 billion, mainly for infrastructure projects, over the next few years. A Kuwaiti firm recently committed to invest $500 million on top of its $200 million investment in a consortium building a $2 billion logistics center in Clark, Pampanga.

  • Japanese firm to invest P20B in PH

MANILA, Philippines - Two Japanese firms known for their printer brands announced they are investing in the Philippines with one of the investments reaching P20 billion.

  • Philippine investment board records 22pct growth in 2011

The Government's Board of Investments registered P368.9B investments for 2011, reflecting a 22 percent over 2010 and 35 percent increase in terms of number of projects approved.

The investment commitments also breached last year's 246 approved projects with a total of 332 projects registered in 2011.

These projects are expected to boost employment opportunities by 67,211 jobs once operational, almost double last year's 36,751 jobs.

  • Philippines in the new East Asia context

The World Economic Forum is undoubtedly, the most high-profile, most covered yet exclusive conference in the world – only 2,000 participants are invited to attend the annual gathering – ranging from heads of state, prime ministers, the world’s royalty from kings & queens…down to their heirs, influential politicians, nobel laureates, academicians, advocacy leaders, social entrepreneurs and not to mention, famous celebrities.

  • Cont.. -- Philippines in the new East Asia context

With no representation from the Philippine government this year, the Philippines was surprisingly discussed in “The New Context in East Asia”, one of the sessions moderated by Senior Research Fellow Stephen Roach of the Jackson Institute for Global Affairs & Yale University.

  • Cont...

One of the distinguished panelists, Karim Raslan of the Global Agenda Council on South-East Asia says the Philippines will be a serious player in Asia in the next few years, “The Philippines has a new president, Noynoy Aquino. The Philippines is the next growth story in the next 10 years, you see some investors in Indonesia already leaving and moving to the Philippines”.

  • Cont..

I think it would’ve been a plus if President Aquino came & gave a session on “Good Governance equals Good Economics”, an agenda he’s been trumpeting, which could’ve signaled how doing business with government has changed.

Raslan added “good policy decisions will soon trickle down to the Filipino masses…in small increments….and to Filipinos, don’t be too negative, you’ll see it”.

  • Malaysia Sees Pinoy fast waking up to success - The Star Malaysia

In 2010, the Philippines registered an amazing 7.6% growth rate, and growing.

Natural resources ranging from gold, copper and nickel are also plentiful. Troubled Muslim-majority Mindanao is estimated to have a whopping US$1 trillion (RM3.1 trillion) worth of natural oil and gas deposits.

  • @machunochi1 Thank you for the Positive Comments and Updates :)

  • @machunochi1 Let me correct you. Islam is not a majority religion in Mindanao, believe it or not. Islam roughly represent a 30% of the population, 65% Christian, 5% others.

  • @timdella92 I only copy it from a Malaysian news website. Not interested in changing it.

  • Cont..

MALAYSIANS have looked down on the Philippines for decades, seeing the republic as South-East Asia's basket case, a source of maids, manual workers and little else.

Indeed, the Philippines – for decades an international laggard – is no longer cash-strapped.

For starters, individual Filipinos have become big savers and the country's reserves (US$76bil or RM238.6bil) far exceed net foreign debt: a record that would put most European nations to shame.

  • Cont..

The Philippines will become a major challenge to our own services economy.

The republic's booming and vast domestic market will attract global MNCs desperate for growth, distracting them from smaller nations including our own.

Can we fend off the competition from the new Asean giants – Indonesia and, now, the Philippines?

Can we become a more efficient destination for global business as these vast nations begin to stir?

  • why other countries keep insisting that Philippines is poor?? I see in may own eyes that Philippines is Rich in everything(talented people, delicious foods, good looking boys and girls, and now, economy is progress... and will be more progress sooner that they will become a develop one)

  • Investors Give Philippine Economy a Vote of Confidence!!!!

Investors are pouring record amounts of money into Philippine stocks, a sign of growing confidence in President Benigno Aquino’s plan to boost economic growth to a level that may exceed China’s expansion.

  • Cont..

Foreign investors bought $1.1 billion of Philippine shares in the past two months, the most since Bloomberg began tracking the data in 1999. The Philippine Stock Exchange Index rose 9.2 percent in the period, the most among benchmark equity gauges in emerging markets, and closed at an all-time high on Thursday.

“This is a very stable economy,” Stephen Corry, the Hong Kong-based chief investment strategist at LGT Group, which oversees about $12 billion of client assets in Asia, said.

BCDA president Arnel Casanova said Friday that the agency was in the final stages of finalizing its concept study for the project, which includes the alignment of the train line and the cost of construction.

  • President Aquino has instructed Vice President Binay to draw up a plan to build at least 1,750 medium-rise residential buildings (MRBs) intended for squatters in Metro Manila.

In a statement, Binay said they were “finalizing the project that can provide medium-rise

    buildings to informal settlers.”

The standard cost per MRB, inclusive of land development, is about P34.5 million (which puts the total project cost at P60.4 billion),”. The project is expected to start this year (2012).

  • Revenue collection highest in over a decade!!!!!!

The finance chief said this is higher than the P1.104 trillion raised in the same period in 2010.

Finance data showed the government raised P1.249 trillion as of end-November 2011 through its two major revenue agencies.

“It has become a very popular destination and is now the world’s second beach destination,” Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez disclosed.

Jimenez noted that last year alone, over three million foreign and local tourists visited the world renowned beach.

  • cont. - The tourism chief said the government has also approved the construction of an international airport in Palawan in preparation for the growing number of travelers visiting the Puerto Princesa Underground River.

After the Underground River was included in the on-going search for the new seven Wonders of Nature, Jimenez said, the number of visitors to Palawan has grown tremendously.

  • MANILA, Philippines - Investments generated by the 13 investment promotion agencies (IPAs) went up 38 percent in 2011 to P763.018 billion, from P554.641 billion in 2010 as businesses continue to show strong appetite for projects on the back of the country’s stable economic performance, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) reported.

Data provided by the DTI showed the approved investments in 2011 will generate 195,637 jobs.

  • @MrSlapmeister are you a monkey? You act like a monkey.

  • @MrSlapmeister BE ASHAME OF YOURSELF,,,,,

  • And where are the images of Tondo???

  • I wanna go home.

  • still there are many poor people and the state of the education in the Philippines is very low. But there are so many beautiful areas around. The only thing that i wish the nation can start promoting is their attitude and manners. Educate people to start ANTI-BULLYING and Stop Discrimation of other people like Gays. If they start that people will have more better ways to lift them selves up with proper education and help Philippines be one of the best country around to visit.

  • @rubien44 Since 2011, the Philippines has become the number one country for BPO (outsourcing). The companies are moving their offices from India to the Phils. Poverty numbers will go down as ppl enter into decent employment. Those living below the poverty line have been decreasing slowly but steadily: 49.3% (1990) to 32.9% (2006).

The population boom doesn't help though. More people equals less to go around. The govt should really push family planning. That is the last hurdle.

  • @MrHalohalo85

haha ridiculous. PI is the poorest dirtiest.shihole i have ever been to.

Full of pathetic jesus cocksuckers they fuck their own sisters and makenthem pregnant when they are 15yrs.

Abu sayaf will kill all you sum there

  • @MrHalohalo85 i have not read much facts as you mentioned. But you know the world might be soon will reach 7 billion in population. So if the Philippines gets better economically... the population keeps growing. And besides most of the tv shows in the Philippines which is a great learning and educational tool for the poor are all about Gossips, Teleserya and people/acotrs mocking people of their own. People are deprived from great education because of poverty.

  • @rubien44 About education. The focus must come from the people themselves. The demand isn't strong among many sectors in society because there have been no viable rewards for a good education (in the country) up until very recently.

As BPO and local entrepreneurs hire more local people, the incentive to have a good education will go up, and with it, pressure on the government by the new numbers of middle-classes, something the govt cannot ignore. Then all else will follow...

  • @rubien44

About gay rights. Again, that is for the Filipino LGBT people to push it. The Philippines is the South East Asian country working towards national anti-discrimination laws for sexual orientation. Quezon City already has it.

Compare this with Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Myanmar and Hong Kong, where it is illegal. The accused can be flogged, fined heavily, imprisoned for life, or all three. Also, in Indonesia, LGBTs are killed in mob lynchings.

The Phils doesn't have any of these.

  • @MrHalohalo85 I meant *ONLY South East Asian country working towards etc..

  • @MrHalohalo85

    blablablablabla

10mio filipino monkeys working as slaves overseas bc they are the cheapest on earth.

Philippines will have anarchy and civil war within 5 years.

No one cares bc you breed like monkeys with 4kids per woman.

  • @tkdwarriors2

    wrong answer.

now go eat your banana and suck your daddys dick

filipinow avg IQ is 76 according to wikipedia

they are the most stupid asian people

  • @MrSlapmeister wrong answer my ass go fuck yourself and be fuck by gay people

  • @MrHalohalo85 I agree with you but in a sense being gay or different in the Philippines are nothing more but a joke to many. That has to stop and educate MOST FILIPINOS that unwelcome comments and jokes/remarks towards a person because they are gays are simply agaisnt the RIGHTS to feel SAFE and THE RIGHTS OF not to be discriminated. It simply harrasments should be stop in anyways possible to make sure kids and adults will not be bullied everyday at home/school/work,everywhere.

Philippines is the home of IRRI, a world-class rice research facility.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 60 percent of the rice grown on the planet today comes from seeds developed through IRRI.

“It is not too late, we have the capability to develop one. We can still become the United States of ASEAN,” Co said.
