I've had trouble with newspaper not doing the job for some reason so I use a small peice of fat lighter to get the coals going.

They will burn at full strength for about an hour then I just add more coals right on top. The new coals will ignite all by themselves. Also if you need more coals from the start, just put some fresh ones down before you add the hot ones. Just keep adding coals every hour on top of the old ones and you can go as long as you need. I cook pork butts for 9 hours using this method in indirect heat. homestylebbq.blogspot. com

how long can you cook with that much charcoal,and if you cooking something that take longer than the coals burn do you start some more the same exact way or just add more to the fire you have going?
