@BiscuitOfMaple I absolutely agree with you... but you know, today an artist unfortunately might not only play, and wall play, but also make a show... and it's very difficult, to some young and not particularly talented musicians sell a "soul to devil" for a success.
This is pure magic. Natalie got it all. She is talented, beautiful, powerful, emotional and plays extremly wonderful . She is perfect.Bless you Natalie.
I prefer much more version when she was young, playing in Warsaw Eurovision competition - she was a winner that time.
This - what's this ?Cheap .. simply cheap...and completely unnecessary this orgasmic faces and movies, blee..such a good cellist doesnt need this clip to present herself.
@annamusician i will have you know that it is simply artistic filming as well as artistic music. I can guarantee that those "orgasmic" faces were made by her every time she played this piece. It is her expression for a very emotional piece... so suck it
I love the showbusiness!!!!!!!!! =)))) But honestly, technically, I didn't played this better myself, so will not tell what it is not well done, will be not a truth. After, somes likes it hot, n'est-ce pas? ;)
@dilnazar I apologize for my comment and will remove it. I think I was mistakenly referring to another post... ( By the way I really liked your videos.. You are a very talented cellist )
all these emotions she tries to express just look so acted and commercialist, i play cello myself and i could barf watching this, not cuz it sounds bad, i love that cello concert but cause i gotta watch this fake bitch
@Philboy50 You know.. a little respect wouldn't hurt. If you really played cello you would understand the incredible heights of artistry that go into such a performance.
Then, what is this comment about a "fake bitch" ? She gives us such a gift of a piece like this and you call her a "bitch".. !
Are you a 10 yr-old with self-esteem problems, or someone who has a hatred of female musicians.? In any case why post ridiculous comments. Go do something.. learn how to spell f.e.
Before people call her a sell out. I saw her perform Music for the End of Time - not exactly the most commerical music in the world - and it was done without any sense of affectation. Most 'classical' music marketing makes me want to puke at the best of times. Elitist, snobby, anachronistic, and pretentious at the best of times... I know let's get a beautiful woman with a moody expression and take a photo with a glimmering violin/cello attached to their face.
@Stoneharp I'm not sure how anyone can consider Lloyd Webber a fine interpreter of anything, his playing is so bland and his recording of the Elgar contains none of the passion or spirit which makes the concerto so special. If you want to hear a great recording listen to Lynn Harrel on cd and you'll get an idea of how this concerto should be played.
it was a good performance. the video was overdramatic but, i dont think a cellist would be able to ask to take off the vision? its just fro your viewing pleasure. wonderful performance Natalie Clein, i enjoyed watching and listening, it was wonderfully played and well presented where arguing is irrelevant.
I have tried and failed to get EMI to take this corny video off u tube for years now (since 2007)! As soon as I saw this video , I felt it misrepresented me - I had simply been asked to play over the recording I had already made . The playing style is of course my own but the filming style, slow motion shots and background pictures are definitely not !! Natalie
@natalieclein ps. thanks for the Christmas message. Olivia was thrilled. We had no way to respond, but if you get this, best wishes. I can promise you, we will never forget the concert. Astonishing.

@natalieclein I admire you took the time to react. You are not the only "victim" of a record label trying to make classical music more commercial.I bought the record and must say that it is one of the best interpretations I have ever heard.
To everybody who is distracted by the video; close your eyes and listen!
@natalieclein An artist of your stature should never have to read comments like the ones here, let alone dignify them with a response but I guess that reveals the graciousness I know you possess. If EMI understood the musical genius they had in their midst they would have sat you down in front of a camera in jeans and sweatshirt with your Guadanini, and not let their creative team distract from the real artistry. Read your article in gramophone, look forward to getting the Kodaly cd.
@natalieclein Your playing is very beautiful, This video is extremely ugly; it's hard to imagine what went through the mind of the director; certainly no friend of mine. I was introduced to your playing thanks to a Guardian.co.uk video of you talking about and playing Robert Schumann's music. That was very nicely done, thank you
@natalieclein Just out of interest, why does the Simpson have such a narrow penetrating sound? I haven't heard you live in concert and am not meaning to be rude, but the cello seems to come out sounding very nasal in these recordings, do you have a resonator or anything mounted on the actual body of the instrument?

The definitive version is the 1965 recording by the late Jacqueline du Pré with Sir John Barbirolli and the LSO, and another wonderful flowing version is by Maria Kliegel with Michael Halasz & RPO. Now Natalie Clein continues that trend with this marvelous version. It's odd but true that the women have the best versions. and lately Sol Gabetta. Bravo, Natalie!
I love natalie cleins playing, the sound is consistent and interpretation is easy to understand, to say that du pre ruined it is quite strong, and in my opinion quite arrogant and ignorant, in my opinion it has alot of the same ideas as Harrison-Elgar, but du pre naturally developped it,

Du Pre ruined this piece for generations of cellists to come. If you want to know how ELGAR thought of it listen to his own recording, with Beatrice Harrison. Not wonderful playing, but the intentions are clear.
The feeling and expression should come from the music, not silly editing and fake emotions. Go and listen to Du Pre to hear how it should be played. It captures everything this concerto is about. Here, I don't feel anything
Saw her play this last night with the NYO of Great Britain. Amazing.

Oh dear. Why does the video have to look like a bad 70s classic rock music video? The backlighting looks ridiculous. Oh well, very nice playing.

I completely agree, this piece is as much about the accompaniment as it is the solo cello. I think Elgar would be pretty appalled to see them cut out.
The ridiculous slow motion and facial expressions are just trying to make one of the finest concertos appeal to modern day idiots.
