You can just tell...Hall and Oats were GREATFUL and HONORED to be with these guys. Darryl Hall LOVED the Temps. He was awestruck to be there on the same stage. He has talked about this in interviews. It was truly a time that he has NEVER forgotten. I never have either. I am BIG fans of ALL of these. Hall and Oats are PURE Blue Eyed SOUL. and that's what it's all about.
You know what video I would like to see but have only seen a little clip of? Is video of their acceptance into the Hall of fame in 1989 with all of them, and Otis all together again. I would also like to see a video of them performing in the reunion tour in what year 1982 but I don't think any video exists.
@DanielSchmidt94521 The Temps in the hall of fame is on YouTube. just look up Temptations 1989 Hall Of Fame. And the Temptations reunion is Standing On The Top.
This was suppose to have been the time when eddie start loosing his voice due to lung cancer, but i can't tell, especially around 7:48 - he was really feeling it. To me David wassn't at his best here.

DiscoNights, what a discovery I made with your video...Kendricks and Ruffin, we won't never forget you, as your contribution to american soul music will be ethernally recognized...
@hardactinman ..Great list my friend. It would be tough for me to leave out Jackie Wilson, Al Green or Sam Cooke. Your list was strong and hard to come by I bet.
I love our people, I HATE DRUGS AND MISTREATMENT OF OUR BEAUTIFUL BLACK WOMEN. I HATE DIVISION AMOUNG EACH OTHER. LET'S START BY COMING TOGETHER, THEN REACH OUT TO OTHER PEOPLE. DON'T LEAVE YOUR OWN, BEFORE YOU LOVE YOUR OWN.
Eddie really loved David and did all he could to rescue him from the demons. There is a documentary Eddie put together including him, David, Dennis Edwards, and Mary Wilson from the Supremes. It was completed about three months before Eddie died of lung cancer. They all died much too young. David has been dead almost 20 years, but his legacy or the legacy of the original members of the Temptations will never die.
@carollouis1941 I saw Eddie in 1977 on a show here in Norfolk, VA headlined by Aretha Franklin including Minnie Rippington and George Benson. That is when his hit, "Keep on Truckin" was big. That was the last time I saw him. It is good seeing videos of him and David together in those waning years. They were true "brothers." Eddie was that tough big brother figure to David.
I am fortunate to have seen the original Temptations at the Apolla in 1965. They were all over 6 feet tall but so light on their feet. They were the best of the best. Thank you for posting this video. Did you know that David Ruffin sang in a gospel group out of Memphis, TN, the Dixie Nightingales? Just a bit of trivia.
I was not fortunate to see the original Temptation in person however, when I was in undergraduate College at Bethune Cookman University @ Daytona BEach. We was able to get Eddie Kendricks to give us a concert . I never will forget I asked Eddie what happened to David and he told me he got him working.
You know whats really fucked is how could ruffin die so broke, He had to make a fortune, thats alot of drugs, at least save a little, but than again being a drug addict is a real bitch, all you think about is getting high.
The problem with David he had never been to himself a song that was sung on their Reunion album. That song was lead by Dennis but I believe it was written for David because of the storms in his life.
@DiscoNights1987 Yeah I think the rule of the Temptations was that everyone was over 6 feet and black. I think that rule changed when Ron Tyson joined the group, but still is mostly used till today.
eddie was sick at the time of this recording and you could hear it in his voice. back in the day he could take it to the ceiling, and yes david probably was gonna cry. that song probably took him back, and just that eddie showed up to be with him on the stage. when the others wouldn't and I commend Hall & Oats for putting this show together.
i have to admit, this is not one of eddie's best, but in his later years, his voice started going. still an amazing voice though. my thing is, look at the face at about 7:02, WHOW!!! lol
That's what happens when you smoke too much. What was a good voice turns bad and sounds like what Eddie just sounded like. That was by far the worst singing I've ever heard by Eddie.
Lets not split hairs guys, this is such a fun performance .. why not enjoy it. I still remember much the same medley at Live Aid, brought the house down. In particular I think that the class and professionalism Hall and Oates is well illustrated - they even have the dance movements under control! The soul singing of Eddie and David - typical rough cast - missing words - all fine by me!
Wow that cancer must have been taking its toll on Eddie. His voice didn't sound too good. And the music for "Ain't too Proud to Beg" sounded better than David's singing. He didn't sound good either.
Eddie was a better singer than david in that he could munipulpate his voice to make it go up down, and around the melodies. (he was an intellegent singer, because he would think what he was going to do next) David pretty much just belt out a song - althoug he could sing. Eddie is the better singer by far.
hall & oats should`ve been greatful for being on the same stage as true artists and not just the hits of the minute which is what they were! TEMPTATIONS RULE!!!
@dreadedlurgy The Temps of the mid 60s to early 70s were fantastic, but those "hits of the minute" had 34 singles in the Hot 100, including 6 number 1 singles over a 12-year span from 76-88 as well as 7 platinum and 6 gold albums. They didn't just flicker across the screen of rock 'n' roll theater.
@1westover true that but G.C. Cameron (Spinners lead singer) was their partner and sang with the Temps in the early 2k. He's the closet there is to sounding like his partners, David and Eddie. He's called the man with 6 voices and there is a video up on YT somewhere with him singing all the temps oldies and he sounds just like them.

Disco--you can always find the good stuff. Can you believe this aired on NBC way back in 1985? I was watching it. If only I'd had the good sense to TAPE it!!!
So much talent, so sad they left this world before their time, what a loss to the rest of us. Oh baby, their voices are like buttuh. And, it's nice to see a bunch of stars sharing the stage. Looks like they'r having a good time together, insteada being a bunch of scene stealing egotists.
Such energy! Such love on that stage! OMG! I can't thank you enough for posting this. I bought the CD of the Motortown Review, some of which was recorded at the Apollo, and I had been dreaming of seeing the Temps perform there. This video is dynamite. And, as you mentioned, of great historical value. Thanks again.
Eddie & David never stopped singing and touring together! They were and still are the voices of the Temptations~ As far as Dennis Edwards, he came into the group when the times and music was changing, he still cant sing a love song!
Are you referring to the Dennis Edwards of Tempt-lead vocal classic slow jams like "A Song For You", "It's Summer", "I Wonder Who's She's Seeing Now, " and my all-time fav-"Memories"? My earsI respectfully disagree with that last comment. It must note that in addition to his brimstone church lead vocal way with a downtempo jam-this gentleman was also the perfect lead voice for legendary producer Norman Whitfield in his quest to bring the Tempts into the FONK era. And DE did-from 1968-75.
Oh wow. I noticed, David doesn't actually say the words "Aint Too Proud To Beg" in the chorus. Oh wait. He finally did after his 3rd & 4th verses. lol I was wondering about that.
Ruffin was replaced withDennis Edwards, who had been a friend of Ruffin Despondent that he had been fired from the group that he felt he had single-handedly brought to success, Ruffin began crashing Temptations' concerts. When the group started to perform "Ain't Too Proud to Beg", Ruffin himself would appear on the stage, grab the microphone from Dennis delighting the fans. The Temptations resorted to hiring extra security to prevent Ruffin from attending their show
Again I say, so they played one show. So what? That doesn't mean they were together as a group or a duo. Also, it often takes years to get an album released. So those albums could have been well into production before they broke up. Again...so what? I'll take H&O's word for what went on in their lives over yours.
For a band that broke up, they sure put out a lot of albums after they did. And somebody please tell them to stop touring together. How can we believe they really broke up if they don't stop?
No speculation, they broke up immediately following this show at the Apollo. So they played Live Aid. So what, that doesn't mean they were back together. They said, in their own words, that they broke up following playing the Apollo, and I think they probably know their own story better than you do, so I'll just have to take their word for it.
This was the same night that H&O decided to stop performing. I saw an interview with H&O where they said they knew they had gotten as high as they were ever going to by blowing harmony with Kendrick/Ruffin. They then took the next 20 years off.
His vocals were actually much weaker at this point than they were 15 years ago. He bottomed out multiple times in this preformance. If you stay clean, your sound usually gets more rich as you age. But chain smoking did weaken his vocals, which is sad because he really is a legend, and he's one of my favorite artists.
This is basically the same set they did at Live Aid in 1985, an electric, fantastic moment. I think they upstaged the subsequent performance by Jagger and Tina Turner.
Anyone know if this stuff is out on DVD? I couldn't find it on Amazon.
Incredible treat !

I bought the CD of the Motortown Review, some of which was recorded at the Apollo, and I had been dreaming of seeing the Temps perform there. This video is dynamite. And, as you mentioned, of great historical value. Thanks again.

The sad part even Hall& Oates and Eddie Kendricks reached out to help David Ruffin, but in the end the drugs handled the ego!!

Eddie & David never stopped singing and touring together! They were and still are the voices of the Temptations~ As far as Dennis Edwards, he came into the group when the times and music was changing, he still cant sing a love song!
magicdancer32208 2 years ago
And PAUL! He was the ORIGINAL voice of the Temptations. And the best ALL AROUND singer/performer.

I'll take H&O's word for what went on in their lives over yours.
coopm12 3 years ago
For a band that broke up, they sure put out a lot of albums after they did. And somebody please tell them to stop touring together. How can we believe they really broke up if they don't stop?
jacksblack1 3 years ago
No speculation, they broke up immediately following this show at the Apollo. So they played Live Aid. So what, that doesn't mean they were back together. They said, in their own words, that they broke up following playing the Apollo, and I think they probably know their own story better than you do, so I'll just have to take their word for it.

This was the same night that H&O decided to stop performing. I saw an interview with H&O where they said they knew they had gotten as high as they were ever going to by blowing harmony with Kendrick/Ruffin. They then took the next 20 years off.

I once read that Eddie's voice had weakned due to chain smoking. But in this video his voice is juss as it used to be. Mayb even better
LILM1996 3 years ago
His vocals were actually much weaker at this point than they were 15 years ago. He bottomed out multiple times in this preformance. If you stay clean, your sound usually gets more rich as you age. But chain smoking did weaken his vocals, which is sad because he really is a legend, and he's one of my favorite artists.

This is basically the same set they did at Live Aid in 1985, an electric, fantastic moment. I think they upstaged the subsequent performance by Jagger and Tina Turner.
Anyone know if this stuff is out on DVD? I couldn't find it on Amazon.

check ebay you can get this on tape I don't know about DVD. Also the same set was done at Live Aid and this available on DVD
