  • Incredible treat !

  • You can just tell...Hall and Oats were GREATFUL and HONORED to be with these guys. Darryl Hall LOVED the Temps. He was awestruck to be there on the same stage. He has talked about this in interviews. It was truly a time that he has NEVER forgotten. I never have either. I am BIG fans of ALL of these. Hall and Oats are PURE Blue Eyed SOUL. and that's what it's all about.

  • You know what video I would like to see but have only seen a little clip of? Is video of their acceptance into the Hall of fame in 1989 with all of them, and Otis all together again. I would also like to see a video of them performing in the reunion tour in what year 1982 but I don't think any video exists.

  • @DanielSchmidt94521 The Temps in the hall of fame is on YouTube. just look up Temptations 1989 Hall Of Fame. And the Temptations reunion is Standing On The Top.

  • brilliant video, makes you feel as if you are in the audieance, temps will always live on .

  • This is a venue that I performed for years in my career,The Apollo Theater N. Y.C.

  • This was suppose to have been the time when eddie start loosing his voice due to lung cancer, but i can't tell, especially around 7:48 - he was really feeling it. To me David wassn't at his best here.

  • @totaly52 Who cares if he was at his best at Apollo, at least he was still alive. I respect The Temps and Hall & Oates!

  • Also eddie always reminded me of marvin gaye (Motown's Debonaire solo male artist) a little in the looks department.

  • Paul was a jumping ass lead singer but I just gotta say that David is the man when it comes down to it and I love Eddie's voice also especially when he was young. I think Eddie's is a little off here becuz of the affects of his throat cancer :( Otis ass just couldn't sing at all SMH

  • in fact of all the temptations I think paul williams was the most convincing on the mike

  • I don't know why, I never really admired Eddie's voice...

and as far as david ruffin. you can tell when someone makes an point of being off time like him that they are really really feeling themselves.

  • Look out Baby!

  • Every time I watch the old clips of the Temps I still get chills. These guys were the class of Motown plain and simple with Eddie and David leading the way. This clip shows the they both could have sung with any decent group and made it a mega group.

  • Every time I watch the old clips of the Temps I still get chills. These guys were the class of Motown plain and simple with Eddie and David leading the way.

  • Fantastic - the only guy with a better voice than Darryl Hall is David Ruffin (with the posible exception of Eddie Kendricks!)

  • I WISH I WAS THERE THEY JAMIN!!!!

  • @Limekiln71 me2

  • two legends doing what they do.Their former manager said it best when he said"it's like someone went to central casting and said 'i want a group with three lead singers and all of the members to be at least 6 feet tall'."the temps were and are an institution.plain and simple.Singing groups after them are STILL trying to get it right.that says something about them and the machine that was motown. i am sorry did i say machine i meant JUGGERNAUNT!

  • thanks I really enjoyer this

  • thank you...thank you....thank you.

  • DiscoNights, what a discovery I made with your video...Kendricks and Ruffin, we won't never forget you, as your contribution to american soul music will be ethernally recognized...

  • david was the best thing that happened to the damn group

  • well all the temps was six feet plus

  • GOOD LORD! i think i just had a religious experience! THANK YA JESUS! David Ruffin- you are missed!

  • WOW THIS MUST HAVE BEEN JUST BEFORE THEY PASSED AWAY,PRICELESS

  • Eddie stayed clean!!! Dress was always tight!!! Cat had style.....

  • I saw a clip of this on TV when I was a kid & then went out &* brought the 12" single with 4 tracks on it from the concert.

  • Daryl and John were gettin' after it! They were huge fans of the oldschool soul

  • often imitated......never duplicated...R I P Eddie,Paul, David and Melvin

  • Eddie's voice wasn't cracking that night. sound pretty good

  • @GarwinEugeneW It wasn't cracking but it was strained out from all the smoking.

  • @qwertymanor i know but there were some other performances like the one from 1987 where it was real shot especially when he sang Get Ready.

  • Simply the best, and to have Hall and Oates backing them didn't make this any worse.

  • 1 Marvin gate 2 David ruffin 3 Teddy pendergrass4 Luther vandross 5 Barry white

  • @hardactinman ..Great list my friend. It would be tough for me to leave out Jackie Wilson, Al Green or Sam Cooke. Your list was strong and hard to come by I bet.

  • isn't it true that Ottis Williams is still alive from the temps? I do not mean the Ottis Williams from the charms

  • @crusher1944 yup his still here

  • Eddie was on that night...:)

  • I love our people, I HATE DRUGS AND MISTREATMENT OF OUR BEAUTIFUL BLACK WOMEN. I HATE DIVISION AMOUNG EACH OTHER. LET'S START BY COMING TOGETHER, THEN REACH OUT TO OTHER PEOPLE. DON'T LEAVE YOUR OWN, BEFORE YOU LOVE YOUR OWN.

  • I noticed every time i hear David Ruffin sing he sounds different its weird but then unique

  • Who the hell said Hall & Oates doesn't have any soul?? Their band could easily be the best backing band in history.

  • legends right there... voice's like no other

  • Eddie really loved David and did all he could to rescue him from the demons. There is a documentary Eddie put together including him, David, Dennis Edwards, and Mary Wilson from the Supremes. It was completed about three months before Eddie died of lung cancer. They all died much too young. David has been dead almost 20 years, but his legacy or the legacy of the original members of the Temptations will never die.

  • @carollouis1941 I saw Eddie in 1977 on a show here in Norfolk, VA headlined by Aretha Franklin including Minnie Rippington and George Benson. That is when his hit, "Keep on Truckin" was big. That was the last time I saw him. It is good seeing videos of him and David together in those waning years. They were true "brothers." Eddie was that tough big brother figure to David.

  • I am fortunate to have seen the original Temptations at the Apolla in 1965. They were all over 6 feet tall but so light on their feet. They were the best of the best. Thank you for posting this video. Did you know that David Ruffin sang in a gospel group out of Memphis, TN, the Dixie Nightingales? Just a bit of trivia.

  • @carollouis41

I was not fortunate to see the original Temptation in person however, when I was in undergraduate College at Bethune Cookman University @ Daytona BEach. We was able to get Eddie Kendricks to give us a concert . I never will forget I asked Eddie what happened to David and he told me he got him working.

  • You know whats really fucked is how could ruffin die so broke, He had to make a fortune, thats alot of drugs, at least save a little, but than again being a drug addict is a real bitch, all you think about is getting high.

  • @readynow12345

The problem with David he had never been to himself a song that was sung on their Reunion album. That song was lead by Dennis but I believe it was written for David because of the storms in his life.

  • I wish I'd been there!

  • Love Eddie and David, Hell, I love all the Temptss! But, man, I could listen to David ALL DAY!!!

  • From 1963-1973 all Tempts were 6 feet tall and up. (Otis, Eddie, Melvin, Paul, David, Dennis and Richard).

  • lol those white dudes look fucked up

  • @Limekiln71 If you're talking about Eddie and David's heights, Eddie was 6'1 and Dave was 6'3.

  • @DiscoNights1987 Yeah, but everyone looks tall next to John Oates

  • @DiscoNights1987 Yeah I think the rule of the Temptations was that everyone was over 6 feet and black. I think that rule changed when Ron Tyson joined the group, but still is mostly used till today.

  • Eddie was still awesome, he still looked young even up until his death.

  • ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! RIP

  • that lung cancer got to eddie but he was the best tener falsetto ever

  • eddie was sick at the time of this recording and you could hear it in his voice. back in the day he could take it to the ceiling, and yes david probably was gonna cry. that song probably took him back, and just that eddie showed up to be with him on the stage. when the others wouldn't and I commend Hall & Oats for putting this show together.

  • wow- what beautiful voices- they were a treasure

  • Nothing is as good as David Ruffin and his contribution to the sound of the TEMPTATIONS.!!

    LOVE YOU DAVID ...................RIP

  • David looks like hes bout to cry singing my girl

  • i have to admit, this is not one of eddie's best, but in his later years, his voice started going. still an amazing voice though. my thing is, look at the face at about 7:02, WHOW!!! lol

  • @spidersarus well he did have lung cancer....but ya i agree, he does still have a good voice

  • I always loved Hall and Oates but now I really love them. They're singing BACK UP to two of the greats? A REAL CLASSIC!

  • I always loved Hall and Oates but now I really love them. They're singing BACK UP to two of the greats? A REAL CLASSIC!

  • @mkeym agreed... my bro works for H&O they're humble #1 Tempts / Souls fans to the end...

  • Wow, its funny how people can hear the same thing, but have different opinions. I think Eddie sounds great.

  • That's what happens when you smoke too much. What was a good voice turns bad and sounds like what Eddie just sounded like. That was by far the worst singing I've ever heard by Eddie.

  • It's not the worst.

  • Love it thanks for sharing :))

David & Eddie the best RIP

  • Tom Tbone Wolk on bass!!!

  • I got chills at the top of "My Girl" when they broke out the original Temps dance moves.

  • I miss COOL black people....Now you gotta LOOK TOUGH...It rediculous..

  • 1 westover...you are exactly right!

  • Lets not split hairs guys, this is such a fun performance .. why not enjoy it. I still remember much the same medley at Live Aid, brought the house down. In particular I think that the class and professionalism Hall and Oates is well illustrated - they even have the dance movements under control! The soul singing of Eddie and David - typical rough cast - missing words - all fine by me!

  • lol i love the this video it bring back good memory keep em coming

  • Will you just look at man Eddie and then David thank you lord.

  • nothing but greats on that stage

  • Wow that cancer must have been taking its toll on Eddie. His voice didn't sound too good. And the music for "Ain't too Proud to Beg" sounded better than David's singing. He didn't sound good either.

  • @haynes58 its because the band the beat wasnt even like this

  • Superb - nothing less.

  • Eddie was a better singer than david in that he could munipulpate his voice to make it go up down, and around the melodies. (he was an intellegent singer, because he would think what he was going to do next) David pretty much just belt out a song - althoug he could sing. Eddie is the better singer by far.

  • Just watching it again CLASS

  • super dommage qu'ils sont morts

  • A classic! What a magic night!

  • hall & oats should`ve been greatful for being on the same stage as true artists and not just the hits of the minute which is what they were! TEMPTATIONS RULE!!!

  • dreadedlurgy you dont know much about Hall & Oates do you?Daaaaa,Wut-Eva

  • @dreadedlurgy The Temps of the mid 60s to early 70s were fantastic, but those "hits of the minute" had 34 singles in the Hot 100, including 6 number 1 singles over a 12-year span from 76-88 as well as 7 platinum and 6 gold albums. They didn't just flicker across the screen of rock 'n' roll theater.

  • great medley; great performers!

  • This is GREAT! My favorites temps David and Eddie...I like Hall and Oates too.....

  • I also bought this video long time ago and haven't watched it for years.

Always brings a smile to my face

  • they did great!

  • I remember buying the video of Hall and Oates Live at the Apollo back in 1986 and totally loved it! Daryl Hall is the bestest...me luvvy him...xxxxxx

  • OMG! I love David, SIMPLY the Best!!!! Eddie my boy 2!

  • There will never be another million dollor voice like David Ruffin.

  • @1westover wait a minute now, I agree but, don't forget Mr. Bobby Womack, look for the song they did together.

  • @1westover true that but G.C. Cameron (Spinners lead singer) was their partner and sang with the Temps in the early 2k. He's the closet there is to sounding like his partners, David and Eddie. He's called the man with 6 voices and there is a video up on YT somewhere with him singing all the temps oldies and he sounds just like them.

  • @hunn89 GC Cameron is a fabulous singer.

  • @1westover

How about a Billion dollar voice.

  • David could sing the hell out of a song, however i perfer the smooth, sweet, and silky sound of eddie k.

  • you dumb

  • this is the best stuff in the owrld thanks

  • Doesn't get much better than this.

  • I agree with you

  • how I miss this music:-)

  • Even though Michael paid for David's funeral, David was a better performer. I'm sorry but that's my take.

  • I respect ur opinion

  • Yes! David was phenomenal! I love the one he did about the statue! No one could do it better! Eddie just looked better!

    David had charisma!!

    Great post!

  • @Pearlhanna same here

  • As far as I'm concerned the Temptations were the kings of Motown. Hall & Oates with Eddie and David, "Wow"

  • boy that eddie, his voice is creme on hot chocolate

  • Oh thank you for the clip...I'm smiling now!

  • E.K. One of the best Falsetto singers and one of my fav, then Michael Jackson is my other fav.

  • @JUN3MAS ME TOO!!! but lets Not forget El DeBarge he's pretty excellent too =)

  • Wow so many of us remember this airing its funny, was 9 myself lol. I recall this show specifically because I enjoyed Hall and Oates and when Eddie and David came on it was a great combo to watch.

  • Absolutely priceless Disco, thanks very much for this.

  • The Temps are by FAR MY FAV GROUP OF ALL TIME. FEEL GOOD MUSIC!!!!!!

  • Man, Hall and oats made good replacements for temptations, But no one can ever take the place of the original 5 David, Eddie, Paul,Melvin, and Ottis Thats The group that started the magic, and nothing will ever be able to compare to them. Remember : "TEMPTATIONS FOREVER!!"

  • Disco--you can always find the good stuff. Can you believe this aired on NBC way back in 1985? I was watching it. If only I'd had the good sense to TAPE it!!!

  • Great combo!

  • excellent...excellent.

  • pure gold

  • i remember watching this on tv. i was 14, which makes me old. anyway, it was wonderful.

  • Really enjoyed this clip the good definately die young.

  • It doesn't get much better than this. Hall and Oates, the superb David Ruffin and a band supreme.

  • Eddie sounds great!

  • So much talent, so sad they left this world before their time, what a loss to the rest of us. Oh baby, their voices are like buttuh. And, it's nice to see a bunch of stars sharing the stage. Looks like they'r having a good time together, insteada being a bunch of scene stealing egotists.

  • uh david ruined his whole life im upset with him

  • Michael Jackson paid for his funeral. So sad.

  • Such energy! Such love on that stage! OMG! I can't thank you enough for posting this. I bought the CD of the Motortown Review, some of which was recorded at the Apollo, and I had been dreaming of seeing the Temps perform there. This video is dynamite. And, as you mentioned, of great historical value. Thanks again.

  • Absolutely as brilliant as when I heard /saw it at the Apollo

  • The sad part even Hall& Oates and Eddie Kendricks reached out to help David Ruffin, but in the end the drugs handled the ego!!

  • fuck you

  • Eddie & David never stopped singing and touring together! They were and still are the voices of the Temptations~ As far as Dennis Edwards, he came into the group when the times and music was changing, he still cant sing a love song!

  • And PAUL! He was the ORIGINAL voice of the Temptations. And the best ALL AROUND singer/performer.

  • Are you referring to the Dennis Edwards of Tempt-lead vocal classic slow jams like "A Song For You", "It's Summer", "I Wonder Who's She's Seeing Now, " and my all-time fav-"Memories"? My earsI respectfully disagree with that last comment. It must note that in addition to his brimstone church lead vocal way with a downtempo jam-this gentleman was also the perfect lead voice for legendary producer Norman Whitfield in his quest to bring the Tempts into the FONK era. And DE did-from 1968-75.

  • Oh wow. I noticed, David doesn't actually say the words "Aint Too Proud To Beg" in the chorus. Oh wait. He finally did after his 3rd & 4th verses. lol I was wondering about that.

  • Ruffin was replaced withDennis Edwards, who had been a friend of Ruffin Despondent that he had been fired from the group that he felt he had single-handedly brought to success, Ruffin began crashing Temptations' concerts. When the group started to perform "Ain't Too Proud to Beg", Ruffin himself would appear on the stage, grab the microphone from Dennis delighting the fans. The Temptations resorted to hiring extra security to prevent Ruffin from attending their show

  • Is it just me, or was that patch of grey hair Eddie had very sexy???? I think it was!

  • god bless his voice were goin nhe were singing his soul out...

  • Once a Temptation, always a Temptation.

  • RIP Eddie and David

  • Wow..is all I can say about Eddie

  • What year did this come out?

  • 1985

  • i had dis tape wen david did since i lost my baby live.

  • Again I say, so they played one show. So what? That doesn't mean they were together as a group or a duo. Also, it often takes years to get an album released. So those albums could have been well into production before they broke up. Again...so what? I'll take H&O's word for what went on in their lives over yours.

  • For a band that broke up, they sure put out a lot of albums after they did. And somebody please tell them to stop touring together. How can we believe they really broke up if they don't stop?

  • No speculation, they broke up immediately following this show at the Apollo. So they played Live Aid. So what, that doesn't mean they were back together. They said, in their own words, that they broke up following playing the Apollo, and I think they probably know their own story better than you do, so I'll just have to take their word for it.

  • This was the same night that H&O decided to stop performing. I saw an interview with H&O where they said they knew they had gotten as high as they were ever going to by blowing harmony with Kendrick/Ruffin. They then took the next 20 years off.

  • love it

  • I once read that Eddie's voice had weakned due to chain smoking. But in this video his voice is juss as it used to be. Mayb even better

  • His vocals were actually much weaker at this point than they were 15 years ago. He bottomed out multiple times in this preformance. If you stay clean, your sound usually gets more rich as you age. But chain smoking did weaken his vocals, which is sad because he really is a legend, and he's one of my favorite artists.

  • Awsome, the poer of David and Eddie is so emotional. thanks for the post

  • This is so awesome! Great entertainment I Love old school, but live is even better. Thanks for posting.

  • they dnt even have this whole performance on the vhs

  • what year was this?

  • 1985

  • thanks

  • Comment removed

  • This is basically the same set they did at Live Aid in 1985, an electric, fantastic moment. I think they upstaged the subsequent performance by Jagger and Tina Turner.

Anyone know if this stuff is out on DVD? I couldn't find it on Amazon.

  • check ebay you can get this on tape I don't know about DVD. Also the same set was done at Live Aid and this available on DVD

  • Brilliant great vid thanks for posting luv david and eddie from the greatest group ever.

  • aww dude great video thanks for puttn dis up
