  • Saw him in concert and met him...he could still sing. R.I.P.

    Hazel MacKenzie

  • WHat"s there to say !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! incredible rock on JOHNNY HEAVEN HAS A GREAT A GREAT VOICE

  • Excellent version!

  • That amazing voice just kept "giving" unaffected by age, to the millions of fans. Johnny's emotional renditions of every song changed at each concert appearance. He had the ability to push himself vocally and with styling changes to outdo himself, with Johnny being his own critic. All audiences got their money's worth. Rest in Peace!

  • The most beautiful love song ever written, performed

  • What a talent!! This man could have been a fine operatic tenor if he chose to.

He hits notes so high only dogs can hear. Riposa in pace signore!

  • Outstanding !

  • In '95 or '96 I was at a Jeep Jamboree at Mt. Airy Lodge in the Poconos. After a day in the woods I came back and Johnny and the Brooklyn Bridge were playing in the bar. My gf was tired so we went upstairs and crashed.

I have regretted it ever since.

  • I HAVE HEARD HIM DO THIS SONG SO MANY TIMES. EVEN THOUGH IT WAS NOT HIS ORIGINAL HIT I FELT HE DID IT SO WELL THAT IT WAS ALMOST LIKE HIS SIGNATURE SONG. EVERYBODY ALWAYS LOOKED FOR WARD TO HEARING HIM SING IT AT HIS CONCERTS. I WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND WHY SUCH A TALENTED MAN WHOSE SONG "SIXTEEN CANDLES" WAS MOST CERTAINLY ONE OF THE TRADEMARK SONGS OF THE ROCK N ROLL ERA. HAD TO DIE TO FINALLY GET INDUCTED IN THE ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAME. YET GROUPS LIKE THE SEX PISTOLS HAVE BEEN IN FOR YEARS.

  • @IAMDMRAE Johnny Maestro has not been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His name has come before the nominating committee several times, but he never received enough votes to make the final ballot. Hopefully, the R&RHOF Foundation in New York will someday award him this honor, which he certainly deserves. One of these years, his name will make that final ballot and he will receive enough votes to be inducted.

  • Good ,but he is no Bobby Hattifeild, he dos't even attempt the high notes at the end of the song.

  • @fluffers99 Johnny's not trying to imitate Bobby Hatfield, and when Johnny hits those high notes, it sends chills down my spine. Both men were phenomenal singers.

  • Hey wsyankeechef, you need to make that over 50 years...he's the best white lead that ever sang a doo-woo or for that matter any song. Rock and Roll heaven has findly got the lead they have been waiting for...RIP Johnny.

  • this is too much like bobby hatfield singing are you sure its not bobby singing and been dubbed over

  • @sukes58 Sukes? You need to hear Jay Black, formerly of Jay and the Americans. Some of these "old timers" really can still belt out a song. It's so sad that we've lost yet another great voice in Johnny Maestro. Just so glad that we have YouTube so that his voice can still be heard.

  • @sukes58 Johnny Maestro enjoyed the music of The Righteous Brothers, and greatly admired the voice of Bobby Hatfield (1940-2003). Johnny sang this song in the style of Hatfield as a tribute to him. Both men were amazing at hitting those high notes.

  • ONCE AGAIN THIS INCREDIBLY TALENTED MAN WILL NOT BE INDUCTED INTO THE R&R HALL OF FAME.

HE IS BELTING THIS OUT AT AGE 65 ON STAGE. GO FIGURE..........I CAN'T,

    THANK YOU MR. MAESTRO........RIP

  • I'm not one easily moved to tears, but that did it. Amazing. I just wish I'd had the opportunity to see him perform in person. He'll never be forgotten though.

  • So sorry he is gone. He could sing so magnificently even in his 70's.

  • There will never be another entertainer like this man. AMAZING!

  • I loved this man. He was a great entertainer, He had a great voice and so much charisma. He made you feel like he was singing only to you. I couldn't get enough of him. I have DooWop dvd's and I play him over and over. He will be forever missed.

  • I loved this man. He was a great entertainer, He had a great voice and so much charisma. He made you feel like he was singing only to you. I couldn't get enough of him. I have DooWop dvd's and I play him over and over.

  • I met Johnny a few times at a buddy or mines house. Not only one of the best singers or our time but a wonderful person. RIP!

  • Sadly how we all will miss your beautiful heart and soul, Rest in peace sweet Johnny.

  • Thanks for posting this. Never knew that he sang this song. It definitely rivals the Righteous Brother's version.

  • This video is of outstanding quality, just like JMs performance, my compliments to you.....i was just listening to Bobby Hatfields version of this great song, which i believe is still the finest, but i must say that this is the closest to that version, very impessive to say the least, i thought Johnny could pull it off !

  • exactly one whole step lower than bobby hatfields version in 1965, always thought they were singing the same key... anyway i like both versions and johnny was in A LOT BETTER shape right up until his death this year, the brooklyn bridge should really consider stop touring because there will never be someone who could replace johnny ever... maybe a tribute concert with great guest vocalists but then do something else... !!!

  • I agree that his voice was still strong I saw him in Hoboken NJ at a Feast, when he sang this out in the open it was great.

  • what a performance, i can´t get enough watching this over and over again... so happy that I saw him last november in peekskill doing this song although he was already quite sick, RIP Maestro!

  • The sign behind them says Music that will Live forever. Thanks to Johnny HIS music will live in OUR hearts forever.

  • Fantastic voice. He's still got it. Most singers couldn't put as much soul into this song like Johnny still has left!

  • What a choir we will have in heaven!! RIP, Johnny...can't wait to meet you someday!

  • WE ALL MISS JOHNNY SO MUCH....THANK GOD HE HAS LEFT US SO MANY GREAT RECORDINGS AND VIDEOS...HIS VERSION OF THIS SONG IS THE BEST EVER....RIP MY FRIEND AND REST WITH GOD NOW....SING WITH THE ANGELS JOHNNY.....SGT. G.

  • Your OH so right Guillefix, I was lucky enough to see Him perform in Atlantic City two years ago, what a awsome performance.***

  • johnny put so much emotion passion and feeling in every song he sung he was and always will be the very best of the very best june angel at the johnny maestro fans site at yahoo

  • This is one of his best. He has so many others that are as good. But when he hits that nigh note wow. God Bless you Johnny.

  • I didn't even know Jhonny Maestro, but after hearing nearly all the versions of this song on youtube (and there're lots) I can assure this one is the best, and only the Righteous Brothers one can be compared to this superb voice.

  • He will be missed but his beautiful voice is a gift he left with us. Thank you, Johnny for every wonderful note you have sung.

  • Rest in peace Johnny!

  • Simply amazing.

  • oh my god... i wrote so many things the last 3 weeks since johnny passed away, how much i love his voice, his songs and how grateful I was having seen him in november in peekskill but I have to say it again concerning this video. Pure emotion, fantastic talented performer with a voice that reaches up to heaven!!!! Magnificent!!! never forget him, never!!!

  • I was supossed to see him in my home County in December of 08 but he cancelled (allegedly because he had a herart attack). He rescheduled for April of 09. He had 11 months to live yet he sang better than some people who are fifty years his junior AND completely healthy.

  • Amazing...

  • I truly feel that there were many American groups/singers whose talent was not truly recognized at the peak of their careers to the fullest extent because of the British invasion and the dramatic shift in style. Johnny Maestro was one as was of course Jay Black. Hoiw sad that such a young man even at this age lost his life to caner.

  • There are VERY FEW singers that you can listen to that over the course of 25 years do not lose one bit of their voice.... Johnny's fans have been blessed!!!! RIP Maestro :(

  • i love all your wonderful emotional comments...it´s so comforting to read all these beautiful words because I still feel so sad about his death especially when you listen to this magnificent interpretation...saw johnny in peekskill last november not knowing just 4 months later he is gone... there are so many great posts on youtube that really pay tribute to one of the greatest voices in doo wop and popmusic...his sound will stay forever in our souls. thanks johnny, you are the maestro!!!

  • Rock and Roll Heaven Has all the GREATS

  • a legend has passed on but rest assured his star will burn bright as long as great music is sung and played RIP johnny june angel at the johnny maestro fans site at yahoo

  • Incomparable!! You are already missed!!

  • genius

  • I've heard Johnny Maestro sing this song in person too many times to count. I can't move a muscle when he would sing this song. Your voice was a magical voice. I've loved it for 40 years and will love it the rest of my life. I know your with Jesus now. I know you'll be singing to the Lord with that beautiful voice. I thank God for the gift He gave you and how much you shared it with your fans. See you in heaven Johnny. I'll miss you so much.

  • @Bootski55 WELL SAID,,IT WAS ONLY LAST YEAR WHEN I MET HIM IN WESTCHESTER NY, HE WENT TO FAST,,I WILL MISS HIM VERY MUCH LOVE YOU JOHNNY

  • Flawless!!!! Johnny does a beautiful rendition of Unchained Melody. RIP my friend.

  • Wow

  • I never liked this song, BUT, Johnny was great -- even on this (O: I JUST found out he was gone like 10 minutes ago when someone else sent me this with a note. Man! I've listend to his music for years, but with You-Tube I'd just really tuned into him in the last couple of mionths.. I hope he wasn't sick long. He was super cool!

  • He last performed Jan. 17. I was supposed to see him Jan. 18 in Florida, but he canceled the performance due to his illness.

  • We've lost the very best!!!! Johnny's voice was as pure as they come... What a gift he's been for us all of these years. God bless his soul!!! Rest in Peace...

  • Rest in Peace, Johnny. We'll miss your beautiful voice!

  • so long johnny...the world lost a fantastic voice...but you will stay in our hearts

  • RIP Johnny, you will always be one of the great voices. Thanks for all those great songs.

  • Goodbye Johnny, your music lives on !!!!

  • Always loved Johnny Maestro style!...God bless his soul!..one of the best ever!

  • @MOJOMANNY RIP Johnny! one of the all time great voices.

  • No bobby hatfield ..but a very good voice

  • Johnny is the best. RIP.

  • RIP Johnny!

  • RIP Johnny and thank you for all the happiness you gave us through your wonderful voice! Oh those angels are so lucky.

  • God love him, his voice is perfection. Bobby Hatfield would be proud! RIP Johnny.

  • The world has lost a Johnny Maestro today one of the best vocalist in the business he never lost his style of singing and always performed like it was his first. He put heart and soul into everything continued to please audiances around the world. If you were ever in his presence he always made you feel like he knew you for ever he treated every fan alike with a smile and wonderful words of thanks. My band Moments Notice were in the same concert Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge

  • R.I.P. Johnny Maestro!! You are a Doo Wop Legend!

  • We miss his voice, and his style. It makes me cry when I miss my beloved Doo Wop legend! Love, Shawn!

  • A singer's singer!!!

  • Great sound. Hope you have many years to sing this song.

  • Unfortunately he has passed on =(

  • An awesome duet would have been Bobby and Johnny together on this song. R.I.P. Bobby Hatfield.

  • Johnny pays tribute to Bobby by singing this song Bobby's way.

  • if heaven had a top 10 this would be number one on the charts

  • Johnny can sing just about anything with great ease and feeling. This is a wonderful rendition. Keep Johnny in your prayers as he's under the weather and needs all his fans support.

  • I think Bobby was better when he was young , but he let his heath go , so his singing suffered. so said that he died. JOHNNY sings this song almost as good as bobby's famous version . and that,s saying a lot, because know one else comes close .

  • You're right. After "Ghost" came out, Bobby re-recorded this and it was sad to listen to. When he was in his prime this song was his alone. But Johnny's voice held up over the years much better than Bobby's did.

  • Bobby got MS didn't let his voice go it happened by a ilness, He will always be remembered he had a great style and understanding of the lyrics played with them and created a wonderful song.

  • no bobby is always the best, people wrote the song because they have feelings writing it. You can only cover and sing it afterwards..

  • Johnny sings a song like a painter paints a picture. He can drift back and remember where we were. So smooth.

  • Just saw them Saturday night in Peekskill NY.. Great voice.. Keep on rockin Johnny!!

  • IMPRESIONANTE 8-O

  • he absolutely hits that high note with such ease and i don't think anyone else has done it since or ever will again

  • l agree, have followed Johnny since 1958 and this is as good or better than bobby hattfield

  • Chills....just pure chills.....

    Stay well Johnny..........

    Long Island needs another concert...soon.

  • just pure chills ........ i agree

  • yes he really is. amazing, isn't it

  • Wasn't too good live but pretty close to Righteous Brothers.

  • not god but good :o)

  • man his god

  • not elvis-not bobby hatfield-but he kick clay, and all of american idols buts ,with his understanding of this song!

sings it like it was his own. fantastic

  • I saw him a few weeks ago in my home County. He's not bad for someone that old.

  • How fortunate we are in Pa./N.J. area to

see all time greats like Johnny Maestro,

Bobby Rydell, Frankie Valli, Jay Black,

The Dupress so often and for so many

years. All great. All dedicated to adding

joy to our lives. Thank you for the memories and dedication which are so

    much appreciated.

  • this version just totally blows me away just an incredible version but then everything johnny sings is just amazing

  • Hi- to the person who responded to my question as to where to get this song unchained melody. I am sorry I erased your message in my in box by mistake. Thank you so much for letting me know what the C.D. is called. I don't know the store you mentioned but I looked into Amazom and found the C.D. I should have replied you before I decided to clear my in box. Bless you, finally someone responded, I have been dying to know, take care.

  • one of the great vioices of this or any generation johnny just gets better and better coupled with the fact hes an incredible and lovely human being there you have it the personna and character of an amazing guy the best there has been is and will ever be

  • One of the greatest voices ever. Keep going Johnny.

  • When looking into Amazon, look for Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge DVD. Great stuff. It was made a couple of years ago.

  • What I meant to say in my previous statement, That I agreed with Lazur1 that Johnny Maestro is far and above any singer out there. So smooth.

  • Oh this is wonderful - that Johnny Maestro has maintained this amazing voice and stage persona for so many years is a tribute to the man.

If only we, here in the UK, could have the chance to see him live as well as the other Doo Wop groups you lucky people in the USA get to see like Kenny Vance & The Planetones.

Thank you so much LadyinNewYork and all the other posters of this great musical genre.

  • well done and clear video of johnny.he sings unchained melody perfect! no one else is closer then him. i let all my friends watch him here on youtube. and they was really shock! so many compliments about him and they said hes very good lookin.

hopefully he'll perform here in hawaii soon.

    good job, ladyinnewyork:)

    aloha and mahalo!

  • No one else has sung so well for so long. The world must be insane for Johnny Maestro to not be a major star.

  • I agree with you is as great a singer as anyone else out there.

  • Well done, LadyinNewYork, this is beautiful, I have not heard Johnny singing this song any where. Thanks so much for sharing, keep up with the good job.

  • Thank you for your kind comment. The early clips I posted here (such as this one) were the first time I posted anything on Youtube, and I didn't know much about improving resolutions/sound, etc, - and I'm still not good at it! It's a pity because the original high definition raw film is just amazing when I watch it on my monitors. I'm experimenting to improve Youtubing quality of my clips, so I can do more justice to great artists such as Johnny. Thank you again for posting a comment :)

  • Everything are done well already, no need to improve. I only know Johnny sing 16 candles, didn't know he sing this song if not because of you. I am now going to search at Amazon to see if I can buy Johnny's album with this song. Take care LadyinNewYork.

  • Bravo Johnny!!!! One of my favorite songs.

  • Excellent camera work on this video, especially for being shot at a concert. No shaking...zooms in and out at the appropriate moments...and great editing from beginning to the end with the audience applauding, which I feel really adds an emotionally concluding impact. Wish more videos on youtube were of this outstanding quality. My hat's off to you.

  • I really appreciate your kind comment. Thank you! It encourages me to keep trying my best under the circumstance :)

  • just the greatest version of this grat song johnnys pasion emotion and integrity are thee for all to see the greatest front men ever and the greatest doowop and rock n roll singer ever in my humble opinion ohh to be able to travel to the states and see him live

  • This looks like Johnny's performance last year at Proctors Theatre, Schenectady, NY (which I had the pleasure to experience). Still with a great, great voice!

The Crests, with Johnny as lead singer, were one of the very first interracial groups to record music in the 1950s. If you ever get the opportunity, listen to Johnny and the Crests recording of "My Prayer". It'll put chills down your spine!

  • My father went to school with Johnny in the Bronx Ny. We would go and watch him sing every weekend out on Long Island he's one of the all time greats of doo wop. Thanx Johnny!

  • The best seven white singers of this era are Johnny Maestro, Jay Black,Elvis, Roy Orbison, Jimmy Beaumont, Gary Puckett and Bobby Hatfield, in no particular order. Just my opinion.

  • Johnny Maestro IS the best singer going as far as those oldies and to hear this version of Unchained Melody is sooo special to me, it was "our" song, can't hear it without having tears in my eyes. Johnny and Gloria a great couple, see them all the time in Spring Hill, FL.

  • Johnny's wife's name is Grace. Don't get him in trouble.

  • Yupe I knew that, but I was having a senior moment listening to the song, his in-laws Tony and the late Louise.....what a trip she was, she was a very fine lady, she is missed.

  • "greatest voice of rock n roll"

Only competition is from Jay Black of Jay & The Americans....see J's "Cara Mia" video here on u-tube.

  • I think this is the best version I have ever heard. The guys are still the greatest group

ever. By the way, thank you to LadyinNewYork

for these great videos. Tour preserving something that should never be lost.

  • Johnny pays the finest tribute to the late Bobby Hatfield whenever he sings this song. No one can sing it like Johnny does.

  • The man and his music... this is as good as it gets... and it is spectacular!

  • ohhh yes yes ty so much for posting this fabulous version by the great johnny maestro you are a friend for life this is just awesome one of the great lead singers and still going strong better than ever
