  • Wonderful. Robeson aside (can't believe I'm saying that haha), the chord changes in this piece are just so beautiful. Something happens to to my heart at 1:42.

  • This man is a man I respect so much, for all that he was, and for that he did, and all the talent he has shown us and entertained us with. I would say to all Jesus his self was the last true communist! However Paul Robeson would certainly have been the second one if the world had have let him educate them!

  • Eine wundervolle Stimme

  • Great artist, even genius. What a shame the way his life got caught up in red tape. He was a fly caught in a spider web. But he was a butterfly.

  • There was an old office building, built in the early 1970's in Vauxhall, which was called Paul Robeson House.

    .

I wondered why it was so named.

    Was it his Estate's property?

    .

Maybe; it was modifyied in 1999 and "Comfort Inn" is running the building as a hotel.

The modifyied building may still be owned by that Paul Robeson entity.

    Cheers

    from,

    del-boy.

  • Wonderful!

    Thank you collos53 for posting...

... and thank you runupahill1for sharing!

  • @CurzonRoad "Wonderful" is an apt description of Robeson's performance. One of my favorite renditions of the song; also lovely are the recordings by Melba, Flagstad, and MacDonald. Sutherland sings it with glorious tone but, as is often the case, with a curious lack of emotion. As you know, CR, I'm a great admirer of the late soprano's art so please, Sutherland fans, refrain from retaliation. Thanks for sharing, Doug, though I'm fairly sure I sent this to you a while back. Thanks to collos53.

  • I've listened to some excellent renderings of this song on youtube but I think that this one is the most hauntingly beautiful!

  • I grew up with my dad singing Paul Robson (& other) tunes. I flowered in the hippy years, now I am nearly 60 (& my dad is 88) & I love all music, but the voice of this man moves me like no other

    Thank you.

  • Wow. That was stunning! I've never heard anything like it!

  • Splendid .... just not long enough ... for me One of the earliest of Paul Robeson's renditions that I can recall. My Mom's dead now these 20+ years ..... I still miss her a lot ..... "Be care full for your mother, You will never get another." and "There's a man comes around .. takin' names." This man was the best singer I've ever known. A credit to HIS Mom ... and Dad. A good example I wish I had emulated. Liverpool, Merry England
