A few months back, I spoke with one of Worcester's mega-landlords, who admitted to me that subsidies absolutely do encourage landlords to inflate rent prices far above their true supply/demand values. To be fair, I followed with the question: "If rent subsidies were abolished, thereby forcing you to lower prices to what the majority of renters could reasonably afford on earned incomes alone, would your business still turn a profit?" To that, he replied, "Yes, but not as much profit."
