You have to understand democracy in Korea is barely over 20 years old. There is a history of mistrust and protest against political leaders, stemming from the years under the old military junta.
Nevertheless, I thought the protests were pretty ridiculous. It was no doubt fuelled by the prevailing anti-American sentiment in Korea.

Also this is a very mature democracy in comparison to America. Atleast they speak out and organize in Korea which is what democracy is about, active involvement of the people in all aspects of government.

If you disagree with the science you can take it up with the international authorities. Domestic American measures have been deemed satisfactory.
And I don't consider Korea a mature democracy at all. There's not a lot of respect for differences of opinion and people tend to be more uninformed and uncritical than in Western democracies.
And the US beef protests aren't really evidence of 'active involvement' in democracy - rather, I think it shows a lack of respect for democratic process.

I don't underand though why people demand the president to quit. Would that be possible? Doesn't Korea have their own Bill of Rights? If not, the government system is very unprofessional. It's appears childish to protest against decision already made b/c the voting system and its outcome can't be altered one day to the next. Maybe rather these people are protesting against the voting system, not Lee, Myung Bak. They're seeking after a system to change their president whenever they want to.

uh I think the beef protests have much more to do with the proposals to ban dog meat and the competion between dog farmers and beef. The dog breeders are in trouble with the beef industry. Dogs for meat sell for $200.00 each. 2/3 of Koreans eat dog meat. 1/3 are regular dog eaters.

Thousands of people are protesting to the new president cuz the president is practically making the desicions by himself. But they take tools without telling me and don't return them. They let thier 15 cats crap and pee where I work and refused to cage them until the job is over. School cafeterias and army bases will serve all those cheap meat because korean beef are way too expensive. If you didn't know many of the protesters are high school students.

exactly thnx for bringing that up, i do agree its more than jus buying and not buying, as i said b4, its much more complicated.. And unlike other materials, this beef poses a risk of health infections to our younger generation, and why should we take that risk? for the sake of free trade? thats not free trade thats a biased act favoring one side

I see alot of similar comments on this video and id just like to say, this issue is alot more complicated than you ppl may think. First this beef issue is jus one of many issues to come because america seems to force things upon Koreans rather than offering, for instance the Beef export was a rather forced act, Korea never really wanted to to this trade it was an act don to please the americans. There are just alot of issues involved so dont talk so lightly by saying, "koreans jus racist"

The beef being sent to korea is different than the ones in LA/NY. they're the ones that are over 30 months old which has a high risk for a mad cow disease. US used to throw those beef away until President Lee lifted the ban.
Don't listen to what the korean government says and face the facts.

And secondly, wouldn't it be a lot easier to just not buy U.S. beef? I mean nobody is forcing them to eat it..

So, the majority of Korean people (customers) like US beef, and some Korean farmers are not happy with that. Then these Korean farmers can even use violent protest to force Korean governmentto stop importing US beef.

Well, I heard US beef is already on sale in some Korea supermakets despite of the massive and violent protest.
The most intertesting thing I heard is that US beef are quickly SOLD OUT in these Korea supermarkets. Korean cusomers LIKE US beef.
So, what the hell are they protesting for?

That is just culture difference. You should not use it as an excuse to attack others.
For example, Japanese eat whale, Spanish kill oxe for fun, and Chinese Tibetan even feed eagles with the body of their dead family members.
