I would say that it are not the demands of a growing population (people themselves are part of the hydrological cycle), but the way we do things. Pollution is not necessary. We can grow hemp instead of cutting down forests. We can use organic farming methods and get a closed nutrient cycle instead of depleting the soil and adding chemical fertilizers to compensate (themselves and outgrowth of the petrochemical industry).

Get rid of petrochemicals and go bio. :)
