Ridley is my hero. As a film director myself, I have learnt a great deal from his art and craft, and mastery of the image. Yes, it is a disgrace that he hasn't got an Oscar - but that's the problem with a nasty 'jury' system deciding who gets an award and who doesn't...their individual biases and prejudices come in the way of truth. But one day, Ridley will be rewarded....:)

If Ridley Scott knew how many times I've watched "Gladiator" since the movie came out and afterwards, he'd be very a happy man. Truly an ultimate classic and a masterpiece at that. He is a fantastic Director, no matter what.

I love Ridley Scott. His films are always thick with atmosphere, which adds to the drama. He makes intelligent films for an intelligent, articulate, and informed audience. Surely he is the natural successor to Hitchcock.

you have to give the man credit..although he's inconsistent, he tries different types of genere, whether it is war, Crime, science fiction, modern noirs, historical fictions, and even love stories. Definitely not the greatest...but among the best!

gladiator was a crap movie from both a cinematic sense and of course the story which is total bull shit. cinematically it had poor lighting and at times shoddy editing. The only reason it did so well at the box office is because of all the realistc fighting scenes and russels and joaquin's acting.

i agree gladiator is one of most craptastic movies ridley scott has made, i can't believe he himself rates it up there with his two masterpieces blade runner and alien. his directional skill with actors did redeem this movie in part since, as you say, the acting was excellent.

I disagree, yes the story is predictable to a sense but I wouldnt say its 'total bulshit', what are you basing that on? As for poor lighting....any specifics? Many scenes, especially in Germania are indeed dark, but perhaps you can concede that Scotts aim for realism justifyes this, it was also a dark, horrible place to be to create a contrast to where Maximus wanted to be....home. Oh and as Im sure your aware, there were was no electricity back then, only bare flames....but you knew that.

in my opinion, Gladiator and kingdom of heaven were his best movies..i loved the former for its perfection..it was just perfect..i had never seen a movie gel together so well..and i loved the latter for its amazing performances and overall screenplay..atleast one director in hollywood keeps an unbiased opinion about history and doesnt think that all muslims are peace hating monsters..nowadays it seems the other way round actually considering the massacre in plaestine

So many film purists criticize this film to no end, as being overbloated, pop filmmaking with lousy CGI and incoherent action scenes. Just revisit Roger Ebert's review and you'll see what I mean. When I was in film school, to say you enjoyed Gladiator was like saying you enjoyed Showgirls. It went on to win an Oscar for Best picture as did Braveheart, which is often met with as much scruntity. I've come to enjoy this film with more viewings. The "Director's Cut" is far better by the way.

actually, think of it this way... obviously directors love making movies, and an oscar certainly is an honor, but with so many nominations, it possibly acts as a driver to continue to make great movies... scorsese himself said he wasn't too sad about goodfellas or gangs of NY not winning cause it pushed him to continue making great films

It seems to strike a chord in the hearts of people everywhere, which is its power. I feel that its significance has to do with entry into the heavenly realm being the key to reaping the harvest.
