Wow weird same problem as the iPhone 4 that some people are having. I said this to a million fandroids. That this is a problem with all phones and has been for a long long time.
Well starting with -80dbm is not very good. And since it's signal to noise measured then the slightest disturbance will have huge effects.
Sure, some phones are better than others. Sony Ericsson and Nokia have been building phones forever and have mostly done away with child diseases such as this nowdays but it happened on a lot of models during the 90's.
not mind!! I tried and tried different ways and it still work perfectly. 2.37Mb/s on T-Mobile 3G with whole hand cover the whole half phone as seen on video.
heh ive been reading the whole thing about the new apple phones are doing the same thing, Im so glad i've yet to update my old technology phone :) MOTO-Q FTW!!!!!!
Same issue here. mine goes from -103 dbm (no hand on the bottom) to -97 dbm (with hand). this last only 1 or 2 seconds then it autoswitch to edge. Changed to wcdma only (type *#*#4636#*#* in dialpad). it deactivates the autoswitch & forces to always remain under 3g.
software stuff:
Will google improve the autoswitch logic?
hardware stuff:
Is the N1 antenna more sensitive than other phones?
Is there some comparison of signal with other phones on same network same location with & w/out hand
hey has anyone tried outputting audio via aux or some kind of 3.5mm jack to stereo? when I try that it randomly plays songs and changes songs randomly and just overall random... it weirds me out
is this like a big problem? can u stil have a nice experience using the phone even though u have this problem? also, not all N1 have this problem, some people report their 3g works perfectly fine, please reply thank u
Not an issue for 3G where there is good signal, but definitely a problem for me when the T-mobile signal is very weak. Then I can lose all bars, but rotate horizontal and three bars pop up! I guess I would say this more of a problem with T-mobile not having fabulous coverage nation-wide, although ATT is nothing to write home about. Verizon is still the best for broadband -- have it in my Sony Vaio.
@Evin07 G stands for GPRS which is the Connection speed below EDGE. the order goes GPRS, EDGE, 3G, 4G. It seems like you are not in a very good covered area with your provider.
I tried to reproduce this on my N1. Sitting inside my house, there was no drop what so ever when I covered the botton with my hand. I had around -70 to -80 dBm and 19 - 21 asu however I held my phone. Without covering the bottom I got 2.67 Mbps DL and 1.24 Mbps UL, when covering the bottom I got 2.57 Mbps DL and 1.26 Mbps UL.
so is this a hardware problem then? I have already tried 3 times to return my phone, but they keep screwing up my return label. I am on at&t so i dont know if this is an issue. Maybe by then the xperia will be out.
@svntsvn 3g is not supported by ATT. Att and Tmobile bands for 3g are different. Currently only Tmobile band for 3g is supported. Att only coveres the Edge network. Hope this clarifies things.
Hi! I live outside US. My nexus doesnt have this 3G connection problem. I tried this hand switching test and my 3G connection doesnt drop. Mine shows UMTS, so maybe the problem is with the HSDPA technology of your provider.
It won't unless your on the edge of 3g, my Nexus one does the same thing in my house near my computer. My Iphone also did the same thing. It's mostly due to interference inside the house I think mine is my wifi router.
Both phones work perfect outside though.
Maybe some of these guys need to go outside and play with their phones?
If the phone is holds onto a signal without touching it then it simply DOES NOT MAKE SENSE for it to be designed in a way where it looses that signal if you hold on to it.
Yes, if the signal strength is perfect and you are outdoors then the reception will not degrade terribly, but trust it to degrade at least some.
The phone should have the antenna placed near the top of the device. It is clearly an oversight. This is completely unacceptable and F'ed up if it isn't resolved or if a discount isn't issued if in fact is is a hardware problem.
The MyTouch3G that I have exhibits this very same behavior. The T-Mo engineers claim 5 bars of 3G at two towers +/- 1.5 miles from my house, and close my tickets accordingly.
As I get decent EDGE performance, I set the phone to 2G only, and get twice the battery performance.
The problem (for me, at least) is clearly HTC, not T-Mobile's network. Thanks for posting this!
First of all, your 3G signal was butternut as it was, you began with -79dBm and 17 active set updates, mine is -68dBm with 22 active set updates, with my base signal being far superior to yours, I would expect my device to not have this problem, move into a higher populated area if you want your junk to work brosef.
Actually, a well designed phone should never drop 30dBm signal strength simply by holding it differently. The issue I was trying to illustrate is that you get good 3G connectivity when barely touching the phone, but as soon as you cover the back with the palm of your hand, 3G is gone. Most people hold their phone in their palm when using apps or dialing the phone. With the N1 you have to put the phone on the table or risk losing network connectivity.
In the manual for my HTC Magic it says the antenna is near the bottom of the phone (about where the SIM is) and it says you should not touch the phone here to avoid signal loss. I always thought it was in a silly place, because it's where I would normally hold the phone.
I have a two year old Samsung F480 that's on 6 bars (full signal) of 3G until I hold it like in the vid (right hand holding bottom). It then drops to 2 bars, though never goes to edge.
My guess is that a lot of phones will do this and it's only in areas where there is a weak 3g signal that will make the phones drip down to edge.
Ehmm. When you hold it with your right hand you cover the whole back of the phone with your hand, when you hold it with left you hold it only with your fingers and on the sides of the phone....
I live in NJ and when the phone is on my desk with 3g I get 1.01Mbps Download and 1.18Mbps Upload results. (YES 1.18 UP) I dont know why, but I do .. Now, when I hold the phone in my hand covering a good portion of the back of the phone, it did infact do what the video shows, my phone bumped down to EDGE and gave me some weak signals.
Well I'm glad I didn't rush out and buy the Nexus One cause I have At&t 3G. If it doesn't support AT&T 3G network theirs no point for me to buy it FULL PRICE. I'm still waiting for A GOOD ANDROID PHONE FOR AT&T. EDGE SUCKS.
I love my N1 but I'll be damned... mine does the same exact thing as demonstrated in this video - I hold it at the top and I get one signal, I hold it at the bottom and the signal drops - Significantly. I wonder if HTC will end up fixing the hardware?
A design flaw in the N1's antenna has absolutely nothing to do with the network. This is just like placing tin foil on your T.V.'s rabbit ears. It's not the T.V. station that changes, it's your antenna.
FYI: Most phones have the antenna located at the bottom, to keep radiation away from your brain, and yet most of them manage to hold a signal even when you press them against your face with your hand.

With this test, it means the antenna is located in the bottom of the phone, so it must be less intrusive to your brain.

Anyone know if this is related to HTC having used foil antenna in the bottom of the phone and if the HTC desire will have the same issues?
I know that some other phones can have similar issues. I wonder if it is partly realted to the N1 not upping the transmitter power enough?
Anyone with proper electronics knowledge got any ideas?

* phone on the desk: 3 bars, HSDPA, -79dBm 17 asu

Anyone who is blaming this on the T-Mobile network is wrong.
As it stands, if you hold the phone by the top it will hold on to a decent signal anywhere much like any other phone.
When you hold it by the bottom the signal strength decreases because of your hand muffling the transmission of signals.
