@arthurkitchen Yeh, i know. He is phenomenal drummer. But when i listen to his Drum Solos, a lot of them sound very boring to listen musically. We all know that good musician is few things - technical playing, soul in his music, emotions, interesting playing.
No disrespect but IMO, after DT makes an album come 2013 and tour at around 2014, I say Mike Mangini should depart DT. Yes, Mangini is a very awesome drummer and all, but I think he is "too plain" for DT. John Petrucci wrote the drum tracks in ADTOE but I think Mike could have added more. As for the new DT drummer, I say it should be Blake Richardson from BTBAM. His style would be an interesting choice for DT, and IMO ADOTE could have sounded better with him because of his unique fills. ) peace

And i used to totally love Mike, then i realized... there are a ton of better drummers in the world. Im not at all dissing him, he's great and all but all im saying is there are better more skilled, tighter, easier to listen to drummers... Like Benny Greb, JoJo Mayer, Thomas Lang, and cant forget Buddy Rich. Mike just has some, well, interesting fills and rhythms.
Mike composed that piece himself. While most of you dislike this video the majority of "drummers" in the world know nothing about harmony like Mr. Mangini does. I can appreciate this video from a performance, and production standpoint. Its not always about playing fast, heavy, 300bpm phrases.

Very bold of him to approach his MD performance like this. He's a heavy rocker and I think it's cool he did this. Shows he is a true artists and not afraid to try new things.

@tachipizarroflayer the one he is doing on the side is called palitos which is usally played in a rumba setting. It kinda sounds like cascara the way he was making it feel though. He was playing to a 3/2 rumba claveHe also did partido alto which was the brazilian one. You want latin drumming, go to Dafnic Prieto, Antonio sanchez, Horacio El Negro....peace

Are you guys seriously comparing mike mangini to mike portnoy ?? Ok i like portnoy - he is really skilled and has a very good sound....he also seems to be a nice guy...BUT !!!! I've watched Mangini's videos since the firsts on the internet..but now we have the Portnoy's bitches hating them. Don't get me wrong, I like Portnoy since I was 8 back on 1990. I really can't see why people can't accept that Mangini has the potential to be just as good as Portnoy. People don't understand that he's known for being one of the most technical drummers such as Time Signatures/Polyrhythms. I'd give it a year and there won't be any difference between the 2 sounds in Dream Theater. The first live performance Mangini did was fucking spot on, I really couldn't find any mistakes that were noticeable.

Mike Portnoy is an amazing drummer, my fav, but Mangini has way more independence, rudiments and knowledge of styles. one thing i think alot of people are not catching is that what mike mangini is doing here is stupid difficult. from 1:26 on just watch his left foot and think about how difficult it is to keep time with that while playing all of those ridiculous fills on top.

@14kevin14 Sorry I misunderstood you. While that may be true, he was legitimately the best suited for the band... I couldn't see Marco, Virgil, or Derek playing with them... Aquilles was a great fit too he just messed up a little too much despite being able to play portnoys songs (that's how he got the audition in the first place)
@portnoyere he has faster hands, feet, better feel, a better understanding of polyrhythms, can actually play styles outside metal whereas Portnoy can't handle the beatles. Yeah, you're a fucking idiot sorry.

@portnoyere manginis feet are most certainly superior to portnoys, he can play ambidextrously, which means he can play bass drum and/or hihat with either foot at any time. do you realize how much coordination this actually requires? portnoy couldnt dream of doing anything close to that, and he knows it.

This guy sucks. I'm a drummer and i'm 15 and i could rock this guy anyday. I've been playing since i was little and i know a good drummer when i hear one...and this is what you hear when a little boy who's never even picked up drumsticks and hops on a drumset knowing nothing sounds like. Sad.

@shadowarrior128 I think you are sadly mistaken. If you are going by his speed in this solo, I think you should know he holds the fastest single stroke world record with about 1200 beats per minute. that is about 20 beats per second. Also he can play completely ambidextrously.

The only legit reason I see for disliking this video is his haircut, which is a bad reason. Mangini has WAY fast hands and feet, but he's got groove too, and that's more important than speed IMO. Though speed is nice for those certain times.
I guess I just don't understand why this video has so many dislikes...if any of you youtubers thinks you can do a better job of this style of drumming than Mike Mangini, by all means, post a video.

@HoracioTempesta This solo is terribly complicated. It's not a demonstration of technique, strength, skills or speed, he isn't worried about that! It's about polyrhythm, co ordination and independence. The reason why he seems to be lost in playing random stuff is because he combines different rhythmic measures, accents & grooves at the same time. I've never seen Portnoy playing clave or rumba, 11/8 and dotted 16ths' triplets that's crazy and i love portnoy but this is another level & approach

I bet most of the dislikes are from Brazilian. Mangini is a GREAT drummer but he doesn't play Bossa Nova in this video, at all.
Do you wanna see a good bossa nova/samba drumming? So, watch the video "João Bosco - OBRIGADO, GENTE! - 2006 (DVD)", uploaded by the user ozmusicshop. You'll see Kiko Freitas playing the song "Incompatibilidade de gênios".
Mangini is technically advanced, speedy... incredible good. A gifted drummer. One step ahead everyone else. But the solos he play are soulless. He does not makes me feel nothing. And as a compositor in the drums, i really far from Portnoy. He simply does not think as an progressive metal drummer. Portnoy was born to play that. I think many of us willl be disapointed with the next DT album ...
Great drummer! very diverse and stylistic to say the least. For those of you who posted negative comments, do your homework and look him up. I think he will be a great addition to the DT family.

@14kevin14 Sorry I misunderstood you. While that may be true, he was legitimately the best suited for the band... I couldn't see Marco, Virgil, or Derek playing with them... Aquilles was a great fit too he just messed up a little too much despite being able to play portnoys songs (that's how he got the audition in the first place)

@portnoyere manginis feet are most certainly superior to portnoys, he can play ambidextrously, which means he can play bass drum and/or hihat with either foot at any time. do you realize how much coordination this actually requires? portnoy couldnt dream of doing anything close to that, and he knows it.

@MsJabv Es broma verdad? Mike Portnoy es un gran baterista, pero no me vengas a decir que Mangini no le llega a los talones. Ambos estan el el mismo nivel, incluso yo diria que Mangini esta un poco mas alto ya que posee 5 veces el record mundial de velocidad. Ambos son grandes bateristas.
A demas Mike Portnoy se estaba poniendo demaciado Egolatra y me estaba empezando a caer mal.

This guy sucks. I'm a drummer and i'm 15 and i could rock this guy anyday. I've been playing since i was little and i know a good drummer when i hear one...and this is what you hear when a little boy who's never even picked up drumsticks and hops on a drumset knowing nothing sounds like. Sad.

@shadowarrior128 I think you are sadly mistaken. If you are going by his speed in this solo, I think you should know he holds the fastest single stroke world record with about 1200 beats per minute. that is about 20 beats per second. Also he can play completely ambidextrously.

The only legit reason I see for disliking this video is his haircut, which is a bad reason. Mangini has WAY fast hands and feet, but he's got groove too, and that's more important than speed IMO. Though speed is nice for those certain times.

@quadmaster89 Men, you are right, certainly i can´t do a better job than Mangini´s does like drummer, but, all of we are drummers right? and some of us knows how a good drummer has to be to play in DT, this guy it´s only fast and try to have some technic but with no skills and strengh, it´s like an Ulrich a bit some fast nothing else, and it take no so much time to wait for some upload a video with a better job that Mangini´s does.....

@HoracioTempesta This solo is terribly complicated. It's not a demonstration of technique, strength, skills or speed, he isn't worried about that! It's about polyrhythm, co ordination and independence. The reason why he seems to be lost in playing random stuff is because he combines different rhythmic measures, accents & grooves at the same time. I've never seen Portnoy playing clave or rumba, 11/8 and dotted 16ths' triplets that's crazy and i love portnoy but this is another level & approach

I bet most of the dislikes are from Brazilian. Mangini is a GREAT drummer but he doesn't play Bossa Nova in this video, at all.
Do you wanna see a good bossa nova/samba drumming? So, watch the video "João Bosco - OBRIGADO, GENTE! - 2006 (DVD)", uploaded by the user ozmusicshop. You'll see Kiko Freitas playing the song "Incompatibilidade de gênios".
Now, that's a real samba/bossa nova drumming.

Mangini is technically advanced, speedy... incredible good. A gifted drummer. One step ahead everyone else. But the solos he play are soulless. He does not makes me feel nothing. And as a compositor in the drums, i really far from Portnoy. He simply does not think as an progressive metal drummer. Portnoy was born to play that. I think many of us willl be disapointed with the next DT album ...
