I searched up G-rating, but most every description says it means for General Audience, meaning it contains no violence, bad language, or sexual themes in any way. But if this was supposedly G-rated because it was a film too dark for any children to watch, at least without parental guidance, how would that work for the above terms of G-rated? Is that really the correct definition for it, or is there a alternative definition of it that means something much different?
This was back when English dubs had lack of transcripts and they would improvise lines. The intro song "Ringing Bell" has different lyrics in Japanese. They made a catchy rhyming song in the English version and put a monologue in as well which is covering up from the actual theme of the original film. They didn't want it to be as dark in the English version...didn't work
Yes, but when Littlefoot's mother died, it didn't turn him into a viscioius serial killer or end up alone in a blizzard, screaming for friends he has killed...
I ordered the Japanese version of CHIRIN NO SUZU because I wanted to see the accurate translation of the film. Many of you already know that the J- version they have on youtube is a fandub and the translation is not exactly accurate.
But guess what? The fuking thing had NO SUBTITLES!
@avrilrocks55 I got the Japanese dvd of "Chirin No Suzu" and believe me even the box gives off a REALLY CREEPY vibe!!! They are still trying to trick people into believing it is a G Rated movie by making the box look really really cute and cuddly. The box art has this big floral design with all these cute baby animals playing in the meadow with Chirin. I swear that this whole movie is designed to intentionally traumatize children with the deceiving shock effect.

@ZoeIsLost Its supposed to depict the innocence of children lost in World War II. It was meant to be shocking. How do you think those childrens life started out? Then it went all from meadows and fun to downhill.
XD i spent an hour watching the Japaniese version, stopping the video to read the sub titles. when all along there was a english version!!?? Shame, Sabrina. Shame. XD
It's actually a good thing that u watched both versions. The USA version was heavily edited. The dialogue was changed to be more appropriate for younger children, and there was much more narration because Americans tend to be unable to pick up on the obscure psychological cues. The Japanese version was a more obscure horror story which used psychological tactics to bring out feelings of depression, loneliness, fear, and anger.
I remember when I first watched the Japanese version, it reminded me of either a horror film or a really bad dream. There was barely any narration, and narrator had an extremely depressing voice. It was the late Legendary narrator Hitoshi Takagi(who also did Galaxy Express 999) who narrated the original 1978 Ringing Bell, and that's what I believe made the film absolutely perfect.
It's funny how stupid anime fans are now. They don't even know the history behind films like Ringing Bell. If it wasn't for Ringing Bell, anime today would not exist!! This film represented all the emotions and opinions of the 2nd generation anime artists who grew up in the post world war 2 Japan.
It is rare to find anime historians or even fans of 70s anime
In the 70s, anime was mostly sci-fi, super robots, and adaptions of European novels. Ringing Bell was the 1st film to really stand out and break the generic mold of the era.
@cynicalseymour Good to see another Vintage Anime fan. It truely pisses me off how anime fans today have no concept or appreciation of the early anime movies such as "Chirin No Suzu". The animes of the last 15 years are complete abortions. I am quite sick of seeing 30 min episodes featuring two characters engaged in some kind of flying battle with blinking lights in the background which could possibly cause seizures.
I find it really funny how every die hard RINGING BELL fan is also a fan of Galaxy Express 999. Every time I am on a forum talking about Ringing Bell, someone always also recommends Galaxy Express 999. But the weirdest thing is that most Ringing Bell fans are also big fans of Quintin Tarantino and the Korean Shock Film OLDBOY.... I wonder why that is???
I lost my mother at a young age so @ 6:20 I get really sad. Not only is the scene pretty sad but the depressing music combined with the faded colors and mysterious background art make it 100X more emotional.
@cynicalseymour Nah. True that they were once children, but the whole "mothers who never loved you" thing is usually what makes them killers in the first place.
I loved this when I was a kid in 1983, but I do remember being a bit traumatized!

@Princ3ssDae A lot of movies are rated PG for "thematic elements"- that was one reason for ET being rated PG.

I love this movie. Dark themes aren't as inapropriate for kids as people think. Look at The Land Before Time for instance.
