Have you ever considered using polarizers (circular)? For the clear sky it really is amazing because instead of having a white overexposed sky (or near over exposed) it's a nice vivid blue, and you can control how much by rotating the filter...
Thx. I just noodled around in photoshop cs4 with some color-grading-tools like digital film lab, the dynamic effect, blend modes...etc. Sorry, I didn´t make notes....
@capice2 You need to turn on frame blending in After Effects to smooth out the motion. Also, make sure to watch your histogram because your whites are crushed, and the black levels might be, too.
@johnblaster It's because cameras only have a certain f-stop range, so it's either the sky is over exposed or the other elements are under exposed. Depending on the angle you are at compared to the sun, however, with a polarizer you can drop the intensity of the sky and it'll really level out the image. I use it all the time (but obviously only when it's clear out)
@StuartHaight I understand that, but that is not what I am talking about. Pause the video at 0:19 and take a good look at the clouds compared to the white background of YouTube. They should match, since at this exposure, that area of the clouds is completely blown out. But when you see the two side by side, It's very clear that his highlights are literally mid-level gray. (I compared this frame to a value chart.) They are crushed. The blacks aren't though upon further inspection.
@johnblaster Yes I saw they were crushed, it could be possible that it may have been done while capice2 was applying color correction? Bleh either way we probably shouldn't take it too seriously and capice2 did say in the description "grading a bit over the top..."
And I just realized that a polarizer won't work on clouds, maybe that's what you were talking about because I was a bit unclear on what you said, it's 'gray-ish' because he did something kooky in the color correcting...
@StuartHaight Definitely the color correction, I'd say. But it's no big deal, I shouldn't have come in here and started talking like this was a pro movie. I know he's just messing around, he'll learn for the future though.
@johnblaster since we're talking about color correction, can I have your opinion on one of my videos I just uploaded recently? It's Just Ride - FR/DH trailer. There is also a before/after on the color correction, a link in the video description.
@capice2 man im kinda stoked about the 7d.. Do you own the rebel T2i also? i looked at some test shots but i dont know which is better.. i come from 3 chip sony cams.. never owned a canon..im getting it mainlt because i love the quality in video
A friend of mine bought the 550D/T2i and I´ll get one in a couple of weeks. For shooting video both cameras have the same specs. And IQ is nearly the same. I can´t see any difference. Sure, if you´re mostly a still photographer the 7D is the better way to go...
@capice2 nice ok im going to look into it because im mainly getting it for video.. thnx alot for the tip.. whatever i get i will keep intouch with you and show you some work.. Cheers from Houston TX!
Sorry guys - its all my fault. I just contacted Craig Tull. And he confirmed that it was shot with a sigma 10/2.8 fisheye. I took a wrong link at the infos on the right...
Try to read the initial comments. I brought that stuff deliberately into a 10fps timeline - I just wanted to see how it looks like. Furthermore, if you like frame blending + ghost pics - that´s fine. I don´t... ;-)
Yeah, its video. But with ps cs3 +4 extended you can import video. Then convert the clip into a smart object + afterwards you´can use a lot of effects + color tools...
I prefer the original...

grading imo doesn't look too over the top. The clouds are friggin amazing. What'd you do to it?

something's just not right about this clip, it's like... I can actually see it frame by frame, I think a blur filter would've worked well.

you drowned your mids way out, bad dynamic range... shoot higher shutter too and your slow motion will be better.

you have repeat frame glitches in there. Try frameblending next time or use cinema tools to properly convert 50p into 24p for real slomframe effect.

how did you slow this down? was the stuttering intentional?
azarate418 2 years ago
No, it wasn´t intentional - i just wanted to push the limits - only a test. Dragged the footage into a 10fps timeline + exported with 24fps...
capice2 2 years ago
Is that at 60p?

Yes, 720p60

Ah ok, I think it's a little too slow.
