the funny thing is that back in 93 Barney Frank supported a bill introduced by democrat congressman Gonzolaz to, among other things, require the Fed to report to to them more often and more quickly and to video tape their meetings. I guess he has changed his mind since then.

If the government weren't making sure things like housing was a right by having people who have no money take on homes they cannot afford, and if the Fed wasn't there to bail everyone out when they make a mistake, the free market would not take on as many risks as it did in the credit default swap market, subprime bubble, etc., because investors would intuitively know that there is no Fed to bail them out when they go under. In fact, risk itself is a form of regulation when you think of it.

The census is only useful when you have a need for strong central management. The Soviets and Nazis got great use out of their census. If it weren't for the census, rounding up all the jews in Germany would have been much more difficult.

Actually, the ancient Roman Republic, that of which influenced the founders of our government greatly, had a census. The purpose of their census was to choose who was in the Senate, etc. The purpose of our census is to determine how many House members each state should get (i.e. by district). However, I do agree that this new census is a gross encroachment of civil liberty, as it seeks to gather personal information about Americans, rather than to simply district the House of Representatives.
