the reserves go away for a month a year at most , a couple of weekends and a two week block up in the curragh, we are paid enough as it is as we only have to go to the barracks once a week for 2 hrs.
@sniper8117 You have to go through a 16week course and it depends if you have any stuff wrong with you like colour blind,bad hearing,trouble with the gardai you will be discharged but if you dont have any of them its more likely you'll get in and you have to do a 8week course after your finished the 16th...i be joining it iswell when im 17,im leaving school for it because whats the point of staying in when they dont give a fuck about school,are you dropping out of school???

The Irish Army Reserve needs to diversify its forces as does the regular army.
There is a need for more commando's and shock infantry so as to defend Ireland.
The Irish Army Rangers cannot be expected to do this job as well there simply is not enough of them.
The current defence forces of Ireland are at 11000 in man power and they would need about 25% of this to be made up of shock troops and commando's.

The irish defense forces should have a reserve infantry commando groups.
It would not cost that much to upgrade current staff to commandos (that is those who are capable of making the standard).
The Irish army are not able to go head to head with any large invading forces. So unconventional warfare would be required. Such as commando raids.
The ARW are too small in numbers to act as infantry. So a commando infantry is a must.
