..."Now there are only birds" for today's modern monks (unlike those of Athos' monasteries) have no resolve to live on those islands. Catholic monks of the Western Rite were truly tough and tenacious monks.
Great video! And I love your nickname - I've always wanted to meet an adventurous wench! For years I was fascinated by the Skelligs and tried to there several times, but each time the sea was too choppy for the boats to make the trip. Finally I made it over to Skellig Michael a few years ago. The skipper of the boat had a little dog who went out on the boat every time it made the trip. The island was every bit as spectacular as I had expected. Climbing the steps feels like ascending to heaven.
That is so true. I think early Irish Christian monks practiced pre-Roman liturgy. Irish monasticism was unique, for it was based not only on withdrawal from the world, but also on penitential exile. They would also have studied Greek, as if in Union with their Eastern Orthodox brothers.
Thanks for posting this. i have just been watching a documentary about this island on the Discovery channel. i was fascinated to hear it was purchased by Britney Spears in 2001 for $35,000,000.
Hi Bonnie - I think that must be somewhere else that she bought. Or perhaps she tried to buy this but didn't? Skellig Michael is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a Special Protected Area in Ireland.

er, NO. People know it is dangerous, you climb at your own risk, the site should not be desecrated for the sake of tourism.
