My favorite part was how you saw a cab there and decided, "Okay, let me use my brain in this situation - what might happen next? Whatever, let me go in through this tiny space." Part of being a defensive driver is to scan inside cars. Why did you go inbetween? Nevermind, don't answer that - I have my answers.
Riding a bike in the city is cimilar to driving a car in the way that you get put in situations where you have a short time to make decisions. Sometimes you make the wrong decision as a result of lots of pressure and very little time. If I could redo this I would go the other way around the cab. But I would also spit on it for choosing a dangerous spot to drop off it's passenger.
Make sure you ride several feet away from parked cars for exactly this reason, riding next to parked cars (espcially stopped taxis which aren't in traffic) is very dangerous.
It doesn't matter what the laws are, keep your self SAFE!
It is illegal to do that in the bike lane in MA. They are required to pull off onto a stret that does not have a bike lane if order to drop someone off.
Also you notice I turned the camera off right away after the accident. I did that because I know cops don't like being video taped, I knew a cop would be coming soon, and I have a lot of respect for cops.
@CyclingMikey you are probably right. I posted that a couple of days before the First Circuit made the ruling to which you're referring. I haven't read the opinion, so I don't know whether that's actually the case anymore (i.e. whether there are any limitiations, etc.).
Not to mention I have lost my license to medical reasons so I take that as an insult. Before you say anything again why don't you try spending a month without any driving.
Hope you're ok, mate. I live & bike in Boston as well, but I NEVER get in-between a stopped car and a hard place. Drivers (especially cabbies) are be unpredictable, fine. But expecting a customer to pay attention to what's going on around them is simply reckless.
I don't know what perfect world you live in, but going up to a stopped cab like that and NOT being completely hesitant to approach it. In the end it was truly preventable if you were more cautious.
I don't know what world you live in but dropping someone off next to a bike lane like this is illeagal for the exact reason that you see in this video . Due to the way I hit the ground, the paramedics suspected neck injuries. Thankfully it was just a scar needing 13 stitches in my hand.
@destro727 I'm thinkin' educate 'em by throwing them in jail for a week for the first violation, and then a month for the second, as well as yanking their driver's license.
thats why we have protected bike lanes in chicago

I wish we could get those in Boston

Woman, of course.

To clarify: doored by a cab passenger, not a cab driver. You can't educate everyone. You need to watch out for high risk situations like this one.

@hagenar
The driver is still at fault for pulling over next to the bike lane knowing the door would open into the bike lane.
EthanF727 3 months ago
@EthanF727 Agreed. But I personally wouldn't try to ride through a gap like that with any speed. I'd prefer to die of old age 60 years from now
hagenar 3 months ago
Anytime a vehicle's in the bike lane, I move into the "car" lane. Bad idea to squeeze yourself in those situations, as you found out.

You want to disable your microphone on your video camera lest you ever take video of a cop (wiretapping statute violation).
dhaines 6 months ago
Unfortunately this camera does not have a feature to turn off the mic.

@dhaines I do believe that's been thrown out, and is an unsustainable charge.

@dhaines Still, good to have your warning, it's one I'd be worried about if I lived in Leftpondia.

Sigh. Pass on the left. Pass with more than a door's width clearance. Google "Bicycling Street Smarts" and read chapter 2.

Ouch!!! That's gotta hurt. It's great that there are bike lanes. Now on to phase 2... "Complete Streets", so that there are less of these accidents.

No, Phase 2 should be educate the driver so to know the difference between a bike lane and a parking lane
