The major causes for this defeat were that:
- France was still exhausted of its bloodshed in WW1 (the highest casualty rate among big countries)
- The French parliamentary regime was lame and unable to produce leadership
- French politicians were stupid to declare war on Germany in 1939: Germany allied with the USSR was unbeatable.

this is not a fair statement. belgium did not allow the french/british to deploy prior to a german invasion, as had been originally envisioned. addtionally, at the time, no one could stand against german blitzkrieg tactics without giving up thousands of kilometers and having a handy arctic-style winter to help later.

The treaty of Versailles (1919) did not "assure the outbreak of WWII". On the contrary, it disarmed Germany and imposed a democratic regime. If the US had hold their promises and been a member of the League of Nations, there would have been no WWII.
The 1919 treaties just punished Germany and Austria which had declared the Great War. Just as in 1815 and 1870 France had been punished for the same reason. The main difference is that France paid its fine, Germany did not

Its a different treaty between 1815, 1870 and 1918. France wanted a great revenge for their defeat. The Treaty of Versailles was their personally revenge for this and it was the worst treaty of peace in the world (even a belgium general said "this is the worst treaty on the world"), because they want an unpayable reparing cash from them (one of some unfair parts of the treaty) and they never discussed it with the defeated nations. In 1815/70 there was a fair discuss about it but not in 1918.

Why didn't France declare war on Russia too, in 1939 ? That's a very good question, and it was hotly discussed within French goverment spheres. Many people wanted to save Poland and to help Finland. The French military actually planned air raids to bomb the Bakou oil fields, which were supplying German tanks and aircraft with Russian fuel.

Sincerely, I think we didn`t reconquer Gibraltar because British troops knew where one stands when the war begins, not like french. In 1898, Spain was confronted against a powerful army, their weapons were moderns, more destructive than ours. Regardless, the spanish soldiers fighted bravely,not like french during WW2.We can win or be defeated by USA or UK,but they know how to defende their countries against invaders, they were worth of my respect.I ratify my opinion: french aren´t good soldiers.
