When I ever was a part of any kind of scene I dismissed it cause I was too busy attending to my chemical imbalance with any chemical I could. I went to a few straight edge shows and always got into fights. We didn't mind fighting but they always called the cops on us. The world desperately needs more well-rounded, educated, informed straightedgers. You're exactly right, a person struggling with an alcohol/tobacco/drug addiction is not able to just drop it and remain sober for the rest of their lives, like magic.
But straightedge can be a positive force to help people (specifically kids) from reaching a life of addiction and abuse, without being cold and forceful about it.

I'm straight edge, and we can drink coffee. It's no illegal drugs. It would be impossible to not partake of any drugs at all. otherwise we couldn't take panadol for headaches, or anaesthetic in an operation or anything. sXe is simply no smoking, no (illegal narcotic type) drugs, no alcohol, and no promiscuous sex. although I'm sure there are some ppl out there who try and abstain from all drugs.
I don't get it. He's just saying that going cold turkey isn't the best way to cure addiction, I agree with that. But sXe is probably the best lifestyle for someone who's been through rehab. A recovering alcoholic shouldn't be drinking socially, as it could easily lead to his falling off the wagon.

Straight Edge is as I comprehend it about tolerance as well. This means that you tolerate others who drink and do drugs since it's their choice. You can dabble in convincing them of the opposite or help them if they need help but you musn't impose your own principles of life on others by force as some fanatic Edgers did. I don't think straight edge was created for people who have problem such as alcoholism and drug abuse. It was for kids who didn't want to associate themselves with that shit. So saying straight edge doesn't work is kinda stupid. It works for some, and it doesn't for others. If you let yourself get that involved with drugs and alcohol then thats too bad, get help. Saying straight edge doesn't work, I feel, turns people off to the idea of it, and that can create more substance abusers.

When I ever was a part of any kind of scene I dismissed it cause I was too busy attending to my chemical imbalance with any chemical I could. I went to a few straight edge shows and always got into fights. We didn't mind fighting but they always called the cops on us. Eventually the straight edge juice bar got shutdown for being a public nuisance. I just want to know, not all straight edgers are nazis and assholes, right?

The world desperately needs more well-rounded, educated, informed straightedgers. You're exactly right, a person struggling with an alcohol/tobacco/drug addiction is not able to just drop it and remain sober for the rest of their lives, like magic.

If this isn't parody then it's just plain stupid. Straight Edge, whatever it's become, was not a treatment program or even a rulebook. It was a term describing life without excessively using drugs, alcohol, religion, sex....anything that can be used as a crutch, replacing the use of your mind and energy to get along in life. So to say "Straight Edge doesn't work" is just absurd. Why not write a crummy song called "Being careful when crossing the street doesn't work". Makes just as much sense.

Can you be any more vague? All you've said just reinforces what I said. It's about feeling superior over other people. If it was a personal commitment, you would have no need to tell anyone about it.

i don't feel as though i'm superior because i am edge, and i don't tell the world about it.
most edge people DON'T tell the world about it, and if they do, cool, good for them. it's their own choice.
saying 'us' means that there's more than one of us, who gives a fuck if it's a clique? as you trying to suggest that a clique is a bad thing? people hanging around with people who have the same interest as them? really? surfing, skating and simply being in a social group is a fucking clique.

Well you've just totally contradicted yourself because you were denying it was a clique before.
Bottom line is that by calling yourself edge, you are associating yourself with the movement. Social groups are NOT the same because they're just based on friendship.
Lots of people who would qualify as straight edge don't call themselves anything. Therefore, you must want to be part of the group mentality if you call yourself edge. Otherwise, what's the point?

not every straight edge person hates on those who aren't, there's only a small percentage that have that mob mentality.
nearly all of my friends drink, smoke or do drugs, some do all three. i have two straight edge friends, whom with i rarely discuss straight edge.

you didn't get it, you don't have to join anything, those principles are designed merely for yourself.
It just happened to be that SE developed within the hardcore music scene with the message to fight hate and prejudice as well to make this world somewhat better. So it became a youth movement, too, but it still is a private lifestyle based on tolerance.

I DO believe that straight edge can work out and it's undoubtly a great thing. But nonetheless these scene kids with their high noses are annoying... calling you an idiot just because you drink a beer and starting an almost impenetrable wall of insult to you to become also straight edge (not made up, based on a true story)

This is not true. Straight Edge is a lifestyle for yourself and not a set of rules to comply with. Ones don't do drugs or are tolerant for other reasons. Edgers do so because it's straight. Where's the difference?
Besides it's not a clique for the under 21s solely, I became straight after 21.

Hi, guys. Generally, I think that blaming addictions and substance abuse on a disease is a cheap way out.

Cause I was, and an intolerant uppity holier than me group of kids just were no help to me. Jeff Ott has been is the scene for ever and in so many different ways, dissing him is just retarded. I'm sober but not stright edge.

life is alot easier after you change the group of people you associate with. im never around any of it, and im always out having good sober fun, so i don't even think about getting high or drunk anymore. so please, until you know something for sure, or you have experienced it yourself, shut up.

true. There's not many types of music that focus so much on emotions. That's why I love singing in a hardcore band... it's pure catharsis.
To the guy in the video: I don't really get your point. I'm Straight-Edge BECAUSE I don't drink/smoke/take drugs and not vice versa.
So even if you're an alcoholic who has to suffer to stay away from drinking you can be straight-edge.
BTW your guitar playing is great.
