Great set of videos, my only question is, what was the reason the An 225 was needed to haul the Soviet's shuttle? It didn't have it's own engines, theoretically, it would be even lighter than the American shuttle, which is piggy-backed on a Boeing 747. They claim the An 124 could carry a heavier load than the 747, why couldn't they haul their shuttle on it? I'm sure there was a good reason, I just don't know what it is.
@polaris92220 well one reason the 124 had a single tail fin, which the tail fin of the buran interferes with ( or would) i think the wieght of the buran would put the 124 above its limits
you have to hand it to the soviets...they built this humongous aircraft that is not only awe inspiring but ultimately very practical...30 years ago, if you wanted to move a massive generator several thousand miles, you would do it at either an astronomical expense on the ground or simply wouldn't bother
as far as aviation feats go, this one us absolutely remarkable
During the Space race , The Americans wanted their austronauts to 'write' in space ( SInce the Ink pen would not work in weightlessness). So they spent a few millions of dollars and made the 'Ball Point pen' ( which worked).
You know what is the Russian answer to AMerica's Ball Point PEn ??
I see people mentioning Russia and Ukraine, funny because my father was Russian, my mom was Ukrainian, I was made in Austria, but born in Brazil, now live in Chicago. I do not place a nationality on this plane, I look at it as an accomplishment of men and women everywhere no matter what nationality they are. This plane can help anybody, anywhere on Earth, best regards to all.
"It was a matter of pride for the Antonov Design bureau".. Yes It Was.
And look at those old engineers.. it is like their son or daughter died and came back alive miraculously from a grave. The 225 has a lot of history and character to it, apart from "just" engineering genius.
wow what an engineering marvel by the soviets, amazing piece of engineering. welldone. I am a sri lankan who has a very high regard to the ukranians and the russians for their technology. Hats off to the dedicated teams who designed and built this in late 80's and re-built in 2001.
I am American and I have to say that I am very impressed with the Antonov 225. A wonderful story surrounding this beautiful aircraft. I was very happy to see it put back into service and flying again!! Truly an amazing accomplishment!
All i gotta say i wish i could see this plane one day with my own eyes. Oh and be careful Ukraine/Russia the Chinese might steal the plane, and make it their own.
I originally joined the Military to be a fighter aviator, but to me Transports like this big beauty are just as sexy a job as fighters. Fighter Jets cant carry lives to safety. The Mriya can. It'd be an honor to fly one.
But imagine what size of Bomb it can carry to blow and wipe out whole territory of USA! Danger for stupid yankees if this plane with Bomb will get into the hands of Glorious Talibans
Im all for transport, but to me transporting other airframes like 737 airframes dosent make economical sense. It would be cheaper to have one large manufacturing center where the entire aircraft is built flyable, then fly itself to its destination. But other cargo like rockets and ship parts all the way!
really impressive aircraft and beautiful too...makes the brand new A 380 a small thing.!! I would love to see it performed in the skies, that sure has to be something!! Russians have great ingeniers!!! thnaks for sharing that
@backpackerable A380F orders = 0. It will never compete with either these huge Antonovs or the 747-400 and -8F. Although the 380F has a capacity that compares to the AN124, the cargo hold is divided into two decks so it cannot handle bulky loads. The upper deck is integral to the structure and cannot be removed. This pretty much limits the A380 to a passenger carrier role.
The AN-225 is a wonderful, beautiful and remarkable aircraft! The history of it just adds up to all that beauty and glory of this giant. And it sure is nice to have it back! Also, very good documentary. Thanks for sharing!
yes.just try to stop racism which covers the good ideas of enginners.skin heads can't enter the university, then they enter the wild camps to kill foreiners.
The Antonov Team calculated the 225 once re-fitted with standard airline seating could carry 1500 passangers in a triple deck arrangement (they mention it in on of the earlier parts of this doc)
Gforce000 is right...who cares about who built this monster...the truth of the matter is that it is by far the greatest piece of flying equipment ever made...(no offense to the A380) I would love to see it up close at least once in my life...
Oleg Konstantinovich Antonov born 7 February 1906, Troitsy Moscow province, In 1930, Antonov graduated from the Kalinin Polytechnical Institute in Leningrad.( Saint Petersburg )In 1946, he was appointed head of the aircraft design bureau, that was later moved to Kiev.(Data fromWikipedia)So he was Russian, and company was moved from Russian land to Ukrainian land because of political decision. Now Ukrainians are proud with somebody's else achivements
