  • Great set of videos, my only question is, what was the reason the An 225 was needed to haul the Soviet's shuttle? It didn't have it's own engines, theoretically, it would be even lighter than the American shuttle, which is piggy-backed on a Boeing 747. They claim the An 124 could carry a heavier load than the 747, why couldn't they haul their shuttle on it? I'm sure there was a good reason, I just don't know what it is.

  • @polaris92220 well one reason the 124 had a single tail fin, which the tail fin of the buran interferes with ( or would) i think the wieght of the buran would put the 124 above its limits

  • Well, Everything is possible!!

Even such a beast can fly!!!

  • "it doesn't require a big pilot" - just giant balls

  • A) What phantastig machines, deeply imprtessing!

    B) Finally a really well made and decent documentary by the Discovery Channel, I wish they'd made more like that!

  • you have to hand it to the soviets...they built this humongous aircraft that is not only awe inspiring but ultimately very practical...30 years ago, if you wanted to move a massive generator several thousand miles, you would do it at either an astronomical expense on the ground or simply wouldn't bother

as far as aviation feats go, this one us absolutely remarkable

  • @TheJorens : We must 'assume' that astronauts don't make mistakes ..:P

  • Heavy metal at it's finest.

  • What a plane, I would love to fly on that beauty

  • During the Space race , The Americans wanted their austronauts to 'write' in space ( SInce the Ink pen would not work in weightlessness). So they spent a few millions of dollars and made the 'Ball Point pen' ( which worked).

You know what is the Russian answer to AMerica's Ball Point PEn ??

    THE PENCIL !

  • @gladragsakshay - lol...it's a good story but unfortunately it's not true.

  • @gladragsakshay I instantly imagined what would happen if they would try to use an eraser XD

  • @gladragsakshay how about a typewriter ....

  • WOW!!!..incredible plane made by INCREDIBLE people.....

  • Yeah great job... now make a few more...

  • I saw little bro last summer up close a personal it was awesome

  • a big chapter in aviation history

  • so amazing...

  • Big Boy Plane Antonov 225.

  • I see people mentioning Russia and Ukraine, funny because my father was Russian, my mom was Ukrainian, I was made in Austria, but born in Brazil, now live in Chicago. I do not place a nationality on this plane, I look at it as an accomplishment of men and women everywhere no matter what nationality they are. This plane can help anybody, anywhere on Earth, best regards to all.

  • ''excellent''

  • "It was a matter of pride for the Antonov Design bureau".. Yes It Was.

And look at those old engineers.. it is like their son or daughter died and came back alive miraculously from a grave. The 225 has a lot of history and character to it, apart from "just" engineering genius.

  • wow what an engineering marvel by the soviets, amazing piece of engineering. welldone. I am a sri lankan who has a very high regard to the ukranians and the russians for their technology. Hats off to the dedicated teams who designed and built this in late 80's and re-built in 2001.

  • @lankadasa

glad to find another sri lankan admiring the soviet tech.

that makes two of us then lol

  • Great documentary. Thanks for uploading!

  • Now this plane take passengers five hundred thousand Does this fact

please someone tell me please please please

  • @3b0di056 it can hold around 1500 people with some modifications, not 5000 that would be insane!

  • I am American and I have to say that I am very impressed with the Antonov 225. A wonderful story surrounding this beautiful aircraft. I was very happy to see it put back into service and flying again!! Truly an amazing accomplishment!

  • Wasn't without good reasons that this plane was chosen as one of the highlights of the movie "2012": he steal the party when was in the screen !!!

  • I want 1 of these...

  • @Newcomer156

Fuel bill and insurance might be a bit heavy on the wallet ;)

  • All i gotta say i wish i could see this plane one day with my own eyes. Oh and be careful Ukraine/Russia the Chinese might steal the plane, and make it their own.

  • Will they ever build more Antanov 225's? I would like to think that world demand for a 2nd one would not be an unrealistic reality.

  • @tails22x There is two, only one flies.

  • I originally joined the Military to be a fighter aviator, but to me Transports like this big beauty are just as sexy a job as fighters. Fighter Jets cant carry lives to safety. The Mriya can. It'd be an honor to fly one.

  • It`s so beautiful. It`s majestic. It`s the Antonov 225, the most outstanding plane in the world

  • How much vodka can it carry?

  • More than you will ever drink in your life :D

  • hm well only a year supply for a a average russian guy ...

  • @Powertampa true :P

  • My hats off to all the hard maintenance workers that work on the 225 I work on large cargo aircraft myself so I know what they go through :)

  • @MadDawgAce03 I bet it would be a pain in the arse to change the tyres on a 225.

  • Simply amazing plane, its unbelievable.

Russians and Ukrainian engenieers are awesome for built such a huge plane

  • hey does

  • Many thanks :)

  • man i love this plane wish they'd gather up some money and finish the second one as a spare incase the worst happens

  • Fascinating doc, a great and unique airplane.

  • thank you discovery this is awesome aircraft ruslan antonov 225

  • A-124 Руслан (Ruslan) .......

  • This plane is history. Thanks Disco very Channel!

  • Im all for transport, but to me transporting other airframes like 737 airframes dosent make economical sense. It would be cheaper to have one large manufacturing center where the entire aircraft is built flyable, then fly itself to its destination. But other cargo like rockets and ship parts all the way!

  • Great Russian/Ukrainian engeneers. Powerful and beautiful plane!

  • really impressive aircraft and beautiful too...makes the brand new A 380 a small thing.!! I would love to see it performed in the skies, that sure has to be something!! Russians have great ingeniers!!! thnaks for sharing that

  • @backpackerable A380F orders = 0. It will never compete with either these huge Antonovs or the 747-400 and -8F. Although the 380F has a capacity that compares to the AN124, the cargo hold is divided into two decks so it cannot handle bulky loads. The upper deck is integral to the structure and cannot be removed. This pretty much limits the A380 to a passenger carrier role.

  • The AN-225 is a wonderful, beautiful and remarkable aircraft! The history of it just adds up to all that beauty and glory of this giant. And it sure is nice to have it back! Also, very good documentary. Thanks for sharing!

  • yes.just try to stop racism which covers the good ideas of enginners.skin heads can't enter the university, then they enter the wild camps to kill foreiners.

  • Another Antonov 225 will be completed in 2010. So there will be 2 giant planes.

  • Because of the economy, work on the 2nd 225 has been abandoned.

  • yeah russia has great engineers I am first one to send a man in space.

  • The Antonov Team calculated the 225 once re-fitted with standard airline seating could carry 1500 passangers in a triple deck arrangement (they mention it in on of the earlier parts of this doc)

  • how many people can fit in there if the squeezed together?

  • 1500-2000 i think

  • Amazing what humans can come up with when many amazing minds come together....

  • Gforce000 is right...who cares about who built this monster...the truth of the matter is that it is by far the greatest piece of flying equipment ever made...(no offense to the A380) I would love to see it up close at least once in my life...

  • Gratz to whoever built this such amazing beautiful aircraft (Russians or Ukrainians, doesn't matter). It's damn beautiful.

  • Oleg Konstantinovich Antonov born 7 February 1906, Troitsy Moscow province, In 1930, Antonov graduated from the Kalinin Polytechnical Institute in Leningrad.( Saint Petersburg )In 1946, he was appointed head of the aircraft design bureau, that was later moved to Kiev.(Data fromWikipedia)So he was Russian, and company was moved from Russian land to Ukrainian land because of political decision. Now Ukrainians are proud with somebody's else achivements

  • I wish they would make more of this awesome jet!...... I really love this russian plane same as i love the american 747...

And make these planes for passenger purposes...

  • I think they've made 2 now. It would be cool if they made passenger versions. But i guess for now the Airbus A380 will have to do...which is an awesome plane in its own right.

  • u asshole this is an Ukrainian aircraft!!!

  • its not ukrainian. it was built by the russians but ukrainians took it becuz it was decided by the russians. just like 25% of military equipment went to the ukrainians and 75% to the russians when the soviet union collapsed.

  • VPovver, stop this hatred.

  • He is just a asshole

  • Aha yes=)))

  • russians and ukranians are both great people...capable of wonderfull machines...like this beautiful heavey jet. Congrats to you all.

  • Agree! Regards from Serbia to all of them!

  • awesome !!
