Installing U-part wig & Long layers

Ok so I just made my first u part wig and I haven't cut the center yet, but I'm curious about the string you have connecting the front. Is that neccessary, and how do you add it there? Did you just sow it together? How do you know how far apart to sow it? Does it make it easier to put on each time, or stay??
